Both groups exhibited significant reductions in knee cartilage thickness with increasing age (P < 0.0001; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.15-0.06 mm), yet the rate of reduction was significantly less in the rural than in the urban group (P = 0.012; 95% CI 0.01-0.10 mm).

The results support our hypothesis by showing that individuals from the more physically active rural group exhibited less knee cartilage loss during youth than the more sedentary urban group. Our findings suggest that reduced physical activity associated with urbanization in developing nations may affect adult knee cartilage thickness and thus could be a factor that increases susceptibility to osteoarthritis.

Data were obtained through high-resolution computed tomography images, cleared and stained specimens, and radiography images of a total of 47 specimens and 12 species. Both cranial and axial osteology characters exhibited a relevant degree of intraspecific variation regarding qualitative and quantitative data associated with skull and vertebrae foramina and the shape of bony sutures and processes. We investigated short and mid-term safety and efficacy of the PASCAL system for percutaneous mitral valve repair (PMVr) in severe mitral regurgitation (MR) in an all-comer population.

In the first consecutive 41 patients undergoing PMVr using the PASCAL system in our centre, procedural success and safety were assessed. Efficacy in improving MR and functional class were evaluated. Median patient age was 74years, 58.5% were male patients, and median European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation Score II was 5.1%. All patients suffered from severe MR with 59% functional MR, 29% degenerative MR, and 12% of mixed aetiology MR. The technical success rate was 90%, limited by four cases where PASCAL implantation was aborted due to a prohibitive mitral gradient. On average, 1.16 PASCAL devices per patient were implanted. All patients successfully implanted with a PASCAL device were discharged with MR grade≤2 and 79% with MR grade≤1. Mean follow-up was 8.7±4.9months. Ninety-seven per cent of patients remained at MR≤2 at follow-up, which translated into a significantly improved New York Heart Association functional class as well as a significant reduction of systolic pulmonary artery pressure and brain natriuretic peptide levels. The procedure-related rate for major adverse events was 3%. Neither early nor late single-leaflet detachment was found. In one patient, air embolism occurred, resulting in modification of the PASCAL instructions for use.

The disease situation is of high importance for farmers and policy makers in Asia. In October 2020, feral cattle in Hong Kong developed multi-focal cutaneous nodules consistent with lumpy skin disease (LSD). Gross and histological pathology further supported the diagnosis and samples were sent to the OIE Reference Laboratory at The Pirbright Institute for confirmatory testing. LSDV was detected using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and additional molecular analyses. This is the first report of LSD in Hong Kong. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) of the strain LSDV/Hong Kong/2020 and phylogenetic analysis were carried out in order to identify connections to previous outbreaks of LSD, and better understand the drivers of LSDV emergence. Analysis of the 90 core poxvirus genes revealed LSDV/Hong Kong/2020 was a novel strain most closely related to the live-attenuated Neethling vaccine strains of LSDV and more distantly related to wildtype LSDV isolates from Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Analysis of the more variable regions located towards the termini of the poxvirus genome revealed genes in LSDV/Hong Kong/2020 with different patterns of grouping when compared to previously published wildtype and vaccine strains of LSDV. This work reveals that the LSD outbreak in Hong Kong in 2020 was caused by a different strain of LSDV than the LSD epidemic in the Middle East and Europe in 2015-2018. The use of WGS is highly recommended when investigating LSDV disease outbreaks.

International consensus suggests that WL is driven by a variable combination of reduced food intake and/or altered metabolism, the latter often represented by the inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP). We aggregated data from Canadian and European research studies to evaluate the associations of reduced food intake and CRP with cancer-associated WL (primary endpoint) and overall survival (OS, secondary endpoint).

The data set included a total of 12,253 patients at risk for cancer-associated WL. Patient-reported WL history (% in 6months) and food intake (normal, moderately, or severely reduced) were measured in all patients; CRP (mg/L) and OS were measured in N=4960 and N=9952 patients, respectively.
