Inherently occurring foam formation during aerobic fermentation of surface-active compounds can be exploited by fractionating the foam. This also serves as the first downstream processing step for product concentration and is used for in situ product recovery. Compared to other foam prevention methods, it does not interfere with fermentation parameters or alter broth composition. Nevertheless, parameters affecting the foaming behavior are complex. Therefore, the specific foam fractionation designs need to be engineered for each fermentation individually. This still hinders a widespread industrial application. However, few available commercial approaches demonstrate the applicability of foam columns on an industrial scale. This systematic literature review highlights relevant design aspects and process demands that need to be considered for an application to fermentations and proposes a classification of foam fractionation designs and methods. It further analyses substance-specific characteristics associated with foam fractionation. Finally, solutions for current challenges are presented, and future perspectives are discussed.
Demographic minorities are underrepresented in clinical trials. For the approval of new drug applications (NDAs), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asserted that clinical trial enrollment should represent the demographics of patients likely to receive the trial drug. The aim of this study is to assess the demographics of clinical trials included in NDAs and biologics license applications (BLAs) approved by the FDA since 1990 for allergic rhinitis (AR), a condition whose demographic prevalence mirrors the US population.

Federal Freedom of Information Act requests were submitted to the US government to obtain documents related to all relevant NDAs and BLAs. The Drugs@FDA database was queried for all clinical trial documentation. Demographic data were extracted from clinical trials used to inform FDA approval for AR pharmacotherapies. Demographics were analyzed relative to national US Census data.

Since 1990, 22 drugs have been approved for AR. The racial, ethnic, and sex composition of all included study populations differed significantly (p < 0.05) from the demographics of AR and from US Census data. Most NDAs and BLAs included overrepresentation of White participants and underrepresentation of Black, Asian, Pacific Island, Native American, and Hispanic participants.

The patients enrolled in clinical trials used to inform FDA approval for AR pharmacotherapeutics do not represent the demographics of the United States or the demographics of AR. The clinical significance of unrepresentative demography between study and treatment populations has been examined for several medical disorders, but has not been studied for AR.

Otolith chemical analyses could discriminate among populations based on differences in the chemical composition of otoliths. We used otoliths from two deepwater snappers (flame snapper Etelis coruscans and ruby snapper Etelis boweni) to examine the evidence for population structure across six Pacific Island countries using solution-based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for otolith core and whole otolith samples and laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) for core and edge areas of a cross-sectioned otolith. The inter-species comparison of these methods is important as the two species are often managed under the same regulations. For both species, the two methods demonstrated separation among the locations sampled with high classification accuracy. Smaller laser ablation separate or overlapping populations could be used in future regional fishery management plans.

To evaluate pictograms for assessing bloating/distension in patients with general gastroenterology (Study 1, n=88) and in those with irritable bowel syndrome [IBS] (Study 2 n=144), and to correlate them with verbal descriptors (VDs) and physician's diagnosis (PDx).

Patients answered the Rome III Questionnaire with VDs and pictograms, and were consulted by two gastroenterology fellows (PDx). Correlations were conducted with Cohen's kappa, and ROC curves were used to contrast pictograms and VDs with PDx.

"Inflammation" was the most frequent VDs, while distension was commonly interpreted as a sensation ("inflammation") and/or increased abdominal girth. In patients not reporting bloating/distension with VDs, pictograms detected these symptoms in (Study 1 and Study 2) 82.2 and 89.6% of patients. In addition, pictograms showed a positive agreement with PDx, kappa 0.63 (p<0.0001) and 0.8 (p<0.0001); and a negative agreement with VD, kappa -0.45 (p=0.05) and -0.1 (p=0.2), respectively, in studies 1 and 2. Pictograms were more sensitive and specific than VDs (Study 1 ROC=0.90 (95% CI 0.80-0.96), p<0.0001 versus 0.74 (0.62-0.88), p<0.0001; Study 2 0.99 (0.98-1.00), p=0.004 versus 0.32 (0.10-0.54), p=0.294).

To analyze the utility of computed tomography angiography (CTA) in identifying internal carotid artery (ICA) injury and reducing cerebrovascular accident (CVA) incidence in children presenting with normal neurologic exams after oropharyngeal trauma (OT).

A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed following PRISMA guidelines. Of 1,185 studies screened, 95 studies of pediatric OT met inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of proportions was performed.

A total of 1224 children with OT were analyzed. Excluding case reports, the weighted proportion of a CVA after OT was 0.31% (95% CI 0.06-0.93). If a child presented without neurologic deficits, 0.30% (95% CI 0.05-0.95) returned with new neurologic deficits. An ICA injury was identified in 0.89% (95% CI 0.16-2.74) of screening CTAs. No difference in CVA incidence was seen in children with screening CTA (0.52% [95% CI 0.02-2.15]) compared to children without screening CTA (0.42% [95% CI 0.06-1.37]). This approach has been productive, but relies on experimental assumptions about the relationships among stimulus-response mappings that define a set. Here, we develop a novel method of evaluating structure without relying on such assumptions. Participants responded to centrally presented stimuli and we computed the transitional response times (RTs; changes in RT as a function of specific response sequences) for each response combination. Conventional task-switch analyses revealed costs when the response switched from the left-side to the right or vice versa, but this switch cost was not affected by whether the stimuli belonged to a single category or to two distinct categories. In contrast, the transitional RT analysis provided fine-grained information about relationships among responses and how these relationships were affected by stimulus and response manipulations. Specifically, tasks containing a single stimulus category produced response chains in which neighboring responses had lower transitional RTs, while these chains were broken when two stimulus categories were used. Biochemical characterization of the two PcyA homologs identified functional diversification of these two enzymes AmPcyAc provides 181, 182-DHBV, and PCB to the cyanobacteriochrome (CBCR) photoreceptors, whereas, AmPcyAp specifically provides PCB to the light-harvesting phycobilisome subunit. In this study, we focused on the residues necessary for 181, 182-DHBV supply to the CBCR photoreceptors by AmPcyAc. Based on the SyPcyA structure, we concentrated on the 30 residues that constitute the substrate-binding pocket. Among them, we discovered that Leu151 and Val225 in AmPcyAc were both substituted with isoleucine. During the enzymatic reaction, the SyPcyA variant molecule, possessing V225I and L151I replacements, accumulates the 181, 182-DHBV and supplies it to a CBCR molecule derived from A. marina. It is worth noting that the substitution of Val225 with isoleucine was specifically conserved among the Acaryochloris genus. Collectively, we propose that the specific evolution of PcyA among the Acaryochloris genus may correlate with the acquisition of Chl. d synthetic ability and growth in long-wavelength far-red light environments.Cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) are phytochrome-related photosensory proteins that play an essential role in regulating phototaxis, chromatic acclimation, and cell aggregation in cyanobacteria. Here, we apply solid-state NMR spectroscopy to the red/green GAF2 domain of the CBCR AnPixJ assembled in vitro with a uniformly 13C- and 15N-labeled bilin chromophore, tracking changes in electronic structure, geometry, and structural heterogeneity of the chromophore as well as intimate contacts between the chromophore and protein residues in the photocycle. Our data confirm that the bilin ring D is strongly twisted with respect to the B-C plane in both dark and photoproduct states. We also identify a greater structural heterogeneity of the bilin chromophore in the photoproduct than in the dark state. In addition, the binding pocket is more hydrated in the photoproduct. Observation of interfacial 1H contacts of the photoproduct chromophore, together with quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM)-based structural models for this photoproduct, clearly suggests the presence of a biprotonated (cationic) imidazolium side-chain for a conserved histidine residue (322) at a distance of ~2.
