Emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as terpenes, norisoprenoids, alcohols and aldehydes, is frequently induced in plants in response to attack by pathogens, such as P. viticola, that is known to cause a VOCs increment in cultivars harboring American resistance traits. In this study, the role of leaf VOCs in the resistance mechanism of two resistant cultivars (Mgaloblishvili, a pure Vitis vinifera cultivar, and Bianca, an interspecific hybrid) and the direct antimicrobial activity of four selected VOCs have been investigated. The leaf VOCs profiles, analyzed through solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, as well as the expression of six terpene synthases (TPSs), were determined upon pathogen inoculation. In both cultivars, the expression pattern of six TPSs increased soon after pathogen inoculation and an increment of nine VOCs has been detected. While in Mgaloblishvili VOCs were synthesized early after P. viticola inoculation, they constituted a late response to pathogen in Bianca. All the four terpenes (farnesene, nerolidol, ocimene and valencene), chosen according to the VOC profiles and gene expression analysis, caused a significant reduction (53-100%) in P. viticola sporulation. These results support the role of VOCs into defense mechanisms of both cultivars and suggest their potential role as a natural and eco-friendly solution to protect grapevine from P. viticola.Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a group of plant steroid hormones that regulate many important agronomic traits. Studies on the functional mechanisms of BR-related genes in crop plants are necessary for the application of BRs in agriculture. In this study, ZmD11, an ortholog of rice DWARF11 (D11), and 42 other BR biosynthesis-related genes were identified in maize (Zea mays). Complementary experiments confirmed that ZmD11 completely rescued the abnormal panicle architecture and plant height of the rice cpb1 mutant. A phylogenetic analysis indicated that ZmD11-like proteins were found in other monocots and dicots, but not in lower plants and that alternative splicing variants of these homologues mainly exist in Triticeae crops. A subcellular localization analysis showed that ZmD11 localized to the endoplasmic reticulum. The ZmD11 gene was predominantly expressed in young ears and seeds from 10 to 16 days after pollination, especially in the scutellar aleurone layer and pericarp. Furthermore, the constitutive expression of the ZmD11 gene significantly increased seed length, seed area, seed weight and both seed starch and protein contents in rice and maize. Our results suggest that ZmD11 is a key gene in the regulation of seed size and quality and that it has a potential application value in the molecular breeding of crops. The traditional Electro-Fenton (EF) is an efficient technology for wastewater treatment but suffers from the acidic condition requirement and external catalyst addition. To overcome these challenges, a GF@MoS2@FeOCl cathode was fabricated using a facile method. The as-prepared GF@MoS2@FeOCl cathode showed excellent performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation in EF process with RuO2/Ti electrode as the anode. H2O2 was electro-generated and activated on-site at the cathode at mild pH without adding Fe2+. CIP was 100% removed with 74.4% of mineralization in 90 min at pH 6. The GF@MoS2@FeOCl cathode exhibited good reusability after consecutive runs of degradation. The degradation intermediates were investigated, and the possible mechanism was proposed. This work demonstrated that the prepared GF@MoS2@FeOCl cathode is a promising candidate for contaminants treatment in an EF system.Chia seeds were used to significantly improve the separation efficiency of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics from water samples via centrifugation. Upon hydration, the mucilage of chia seeds were able to capture PVC microplastics with sizes ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers. Since PVC microplastics contained di-2-etylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) as a plasticizer (verified via Fourier transform infrared spectrometry), DEHP was used as an indicator in the subsequent quantification via gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Specifically after verifying the DEHP peak in the GC spectrum using DEHP reference standard as a positive control, the GC spectral area of that peak was used to quantify the amount of DEHP in the sample. Using nominal operation settings at 10 min and 1000 rpm with 100 mg of chia seeds, the separation efficiency could be improved by 5 times (500%) as compared to the absence of chia seeds. Furthermore, chia seeds were also compatible with simulated synthetic wastewater samples. Most importantly, the use of chia seeds did not interfere with GC-MS quantification protocol and accuracy. The result suggested the proposed method can be used as a simple screening tool of microplastics entering wastewater treatment plant, even though a series of follow-up studies are needed in future.
Heart Failure (HF) is mostly a lifestyle-related disease that is suited to telemonitoring since patients' signs and symptoms can be assessed remotely by healthcare providers. Today, non-invasive telemonitoring programs are increasingly used in HF care to detect patients' deterioration. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ca77-1.html This study aims to review and assess the distinctive characteristics of the different telemonitoring systems (TMS) tested in HF patients through clinical trials (CTs). Discussing the impact of the evaluation results of these systems is also another objective of this work.

The search for CTs studies related to non-invasive home TMS in HF patients has been made in Cochrane Library. Research works of interest were limited to those articles published between 2005 and March 2019.

A total of 24 CTs that fully met the inclusion criteria were included in the final review. The main functionalities of these TMS were analyzed and compared among them. Also, the monitored parameters and significant findings of each trial were describee few systems that comply with the CPGs recommendations found promising results, suggesting that the design of TMS for the HF management should take into account the recommendations of specialists (CPGs).Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), primarily docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), have received worldwide attention in recent years due to an increasing awareness of their uniqueness in improving diet and human health and their apparently inevitable shortage in global availability. Microbial cell factories are a major solution to supplying these precious molecules in sufficient amounts and providing PUFA-rich aquafeed, superfoods, and medical formulations. This review assesses the PUFA world markets and highlights recent advances in upgrading and streamlining microalgae, yeasts, fungi, and bacteria for high-level PUFA production and broadening of the PUFA spectrum.
The objective of this work was the development and characterization of a ceramic composite based on (Ce,Y)-TZP/Al
O
aiming an application on dental implants, comparing it with conventional monolithic 3Y-TZP ceramics, currently used for the same type of application.

Ceramic samples, 3Y-TZP (n=40) and (Ce,Y)-TZP/Al
O
(n=40), were sintered at 1500°C - 2h and characterized by relative density, X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and microstructure. Then, the samples of both materials were divided into two groups 1) samples with original (as sintered) surfaces; 2) samples with conditioned, polished, surfaces. All samples were submitted to hydrothermal degradation tests, on an autoclave (134°C - 2bar), for 10h in artificial saliva. The degraded samples were characterized by XRD and the polished group were also characterized by their elastic moduli, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness (Vickers indentation method). Both groups were also submitted to a flexural strength test, 3B-P testing, for which the data were inented average strength of 810.6±147MPa (as-sintered) and 952.6±88MPa (polished).

The composites (Ce,Y)-TZP/Al
O
showed high resistance to degradation in saliva and adequate properties for use as dental implants. Values of flexural strength (>950MPa) and Weibull modulus (m>10) were similar to the conventional 3Y-TZP ceramics. Moreover, its hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness were higher than those obtained for 3Y-TZP. The expressive values of K
obtained for (Ce,Y)-TZP/Al
O
composites are results of association of different toughening mechanisms acting simultaneously in the material.

In this study, in order to obtain a suitable polymer for this application as well as troubleshoot the main drawbacks such as stress relaxation and water absorption, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers with various compositions were synthesized and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Mechanical properties of samples were evaluated by tensile, elasticity, and stress relaxation tests. According to the required properties for orthodontic chain application, PU2000-311 which contains reversible crosslinks, was selected as the most favorable sample among other pure samples. Moreover, to reduce the water absorption content of PU2000-311, its nanocomposite containing 1 wt% of silica nanoparticles was prepared via solution casting method. As water content angle and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images illustrate, incorporation of 1 wt% of modified silica nanoparticles has increased PU2000-311-1S hydrophobicity. In vitro oral environment study showed crystability of samples has recovered great portion of relaxed force. Stress relaxation study indicated samples are applicable in oral temperature range and temperature changes have assisted recovery of relaxed force and reduced treatment period. Finally, shape memory study showed that optimum samples could recover 100% of their original shape.Serum uric acid (SUA) has been associated with cardiovascular disease, but up to now whether SUA is an independent cardiovascular risk factor or merely a disease-related epiphenomenon remains still controversial. within the framework of the Verona Heart Study, we prospectively followed 703 subjects with angiographically demonstrated and clinically stable coronary artery disease between May 1996 and March 2007. At baseline, SUA levels were measured in all the patients. Genotype data of SCL2A9 rs7442295 polymorphism, which has been associated with SUA by genome-wide association studies, were available for 686 subjects (97.6%). After a median follow-up of 57 months, 116 patients (16.5%) had died, 83 (11.8%) because of cardiovascular causes. Patients with hyperuricemia, defined by SUA levels above the 75th percentile (≥0.41 mmol/L), had an increased total and cardiovascular mortality rate than those with SUA below this threshold level (23.3% vs 14.1%, P = 0.048 and 19.4% vs 9.2%, P = 0.001, respectively, by Kaplan-Meier with Log-Rank test).
