Nevertheless, curcumin increased the H3K27 acetylation level at the manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD2) gene promoter and promoted the expression of SOD2 gene. Oxidative damage in the rat striatum as well as learning and memory dysfunction were ameliorated after curcumin treatment. Taken together, our results suggest that the regulation of oxidative stress by histone acetylation may be a key mechanism of manganese-induced neurotoxicity. In addition, curcumin ameliorates Mn-induced neurotoxicity may be due to alleviation of oxidative damage mediated by increased activation of H3K27 acetylation at the SOD2 gene promoter.Using bacteriophages (phages) as environmental sanitizers has been recognized as a potential alternative method to remove bacterial contamination in vitro; however, very few studies are available on the application of phages for infection control in hospitals. Here, we performed a 3-year prospective intervention study using aerosolized phage cocktails as biocontrol agents against carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infection in the hospital. When a CRAB-infected patient was identified in an intensive care unit (ICU), their surrounding environment was chosen for phage aerosol decontamination. Before decontamination, 501 clinical specimens from the patients were subjected to antibiotic resistance analysis and phage typing. The optimal phage cocktails were a combination of different phage families or were constructed by next-evolutionary phage typing with the highest score for the host lysis zone to prevent the development of environmental CRAB phage resistance. The phage infection percentage of the antibiotic-resistant A. baumannii strains was 97.1%, whereas the infection percentage in the antibiotic-susceptible strains was 79.3%. During the phage decontamination periods from 2017 to 2019, the percentage of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii in test ICUs decreased significantly from 65.3% to 55%. The rate of new acquisitions of CRAB infection over the three years was 4.4 per 1000 patient-days, which was significantly lower than that in the control wards (8.9 per 1000 patient-days) where phage decontamination had never been performed. In conclusion, our results support the potential of phage cocktails to decrease CRAB infection rates, and the aerosol generation process may make this approach more comprehensive and time-saving.Numerous air pollutants have been reported to influence the outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, whether air pollution affects implantation in frozen embryo transfer (FET) process is under debate. We aimed to find the association between ambient air pollution and implantation potential of FET and test the value of adding air pollution data to a random forest model (RFM) predicting intrauterine pregnancy. Using a retrospective study of a 4-year single-center design,we analyzed 3698 cycles of women living in Shanghai who underwent FET between 2015 and 2018. To estimate patients' individual exposure to air pollution, we computed averages of daily concentrations of six air pollutants including PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, NO2, and O3 measured at 9 monitoring stations in Shanghai for the exposure period (one month before FET). Moreover, A predictive model of 15 variables was established using RFM. Air pollutants levels of patients with or without intrauterine pregnancy were compared. Our results indicated that for exposure periods before FET, NO2 were negatively associated with intrauterine pregnancy (OR 0.906, CI 0.816-0.989). AUROC increased from 0.712 to 0.771 as air pollutants features were added. Overall, our findings demonstrate that exposure to NO2 before transfer has an adverse effect on clinical pregnancy. The performance to predict intrauterine pregnancy will improve with the use of air pollution data in RFM.Melatonin is a well-known signaling molecule that mediates a range of physiological activities and various stress reactions in plants. We comprehensively tested the effect of melatonin on the development of root hairs and glandular trichomes and found that melatonin pretreatment of tobacco seeds significantly increased the length of root hairs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/valemetostat-ds-3201.html Furthermore, melatonin-treated tobacco exhibited significantly higher density of trichomes and larger glandular heads on long-stalk glandular trichomes than untreated plants, which resulted in enhanced secretion in glandular trichomes. Exogenous melatonin enhanced the aphid resistance of plants by facilitating the accumulation of cembranoids in the glandular trichomes and alleviated cadmium toxicity by increasing the Cd-exudation capacity of long glandular trichomes. Metabolic analysis indicated that the contents of 108 metabolites significantly changed upon melatonin treatment, with the contents of those that are directly/indirectly involved in melatonin metabolism changing the most. Further, KEGG pathway analysis suggested that the metabolic pathways of amino acids, reducing sugar, secondary metabolites, indole alkaloid biosynthesis, purine, pyrimidine, and ABC transporters were greatly influenced by exogenous melatonin application. Moreover, metabolisms of melatonin-related antioxidants and pyrimidine nucleoside antibiotics were enhanced after melatonin treatment. Melatonin improved tobacco resistance to high salinity, drought, and extreme temperature stresses, as indicated by improved photosynthetic and antioxidant capacities in treated vs. untreated plants. This study lays a foundation for the comprehensive application of melatonin to increase the stress tolerance of plants. The development of nanotechnologies is leading to greater abundance of engineered nanoparticles (EN) in the environment, including in the atmospheric air. To date, it has been shown that the most prevalent EN found in the air are silver (Ag), titanium dioxide (TiO2), titanium (Ti), and silicon dioxide (SiO2). As the intestinal tract is increasingly recognized as a target for adverse effects induced by inhalation of air particles, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of these 4 atmospheric EN on intestinal inflammation and microbiota. We assessed the combined toxicity effects of Ag, Ti, TiO2, and SiO2 following a 28-day inhalation protocol in male and female mice. In distal and proximal colon, and in jejunum, EN mixture inhalation did not induce overt histological damage, but led to a significant modulation of inflammatory cytokine transcript abundance, including downregulation of Tnfα, Ifnγ, Il1β, Il17a, Il22, IL10, and Cxcl1 mRNA levels in male jejunum. A dysbiosis was observed in cecal microbiota of male and female mice exposed to the EN mixture, characterized by sex-dependent modulations of specific bacterial taxa, as well as sex-independent decreased abundance of the Eggerthellaceae family. Under dextran sodium sulfate-induced inflammatory conditions, exposure to the EN mixture increased the development of colitis in both male and female mice. Moreover, the direct dose-response effects of individual and mixed EN on gut organoids was studied and Ag, TiO2, Ti, SiO2, and EN mixture were found to generate specific inflammatory responses in the intestinal epithelium. These results indicate that the 4 most prevalent atmospheric EN could have the ability to disturb intestinal homeostasis through direct modulation of cytokine expression in gut epithelium, and by altering the inflammatory response and microbiota composition following inhalation.
Anomia affects numerous persons with aphasia. Treatment effects of anomia group therapy have been reported, but the evidence is not comprehensive. This study aimed to explore treatment effects of a naming treatment compared with a non-naming treatment delivered in a group setting.
In a randomized controlled trial, 17 participants with chronic poststroke aphasia underwent group therapy, 2 hours a session, 3 times per week, for a total of 20 hours. The treatment given in the naming group was modified semantic feature analysis (SFA). Treatment content in the non-naming group comprised auditory comprehension, copying text, and reading. The primary outcome measure was accuracy in confrontation naming of participant-selected trained nouns and verbs. Generalization effects were evaluated in single-word naming, connected speech, and everyday communication.
Participants in both groups significantly improved their naming of trained items. There were no differences between the groups. The treatment effect did not remain at follow-up 10 weeks after therapy. No other statistically significant changes occurred in either group.
Group intervention can improve naming ability in individuals with chronic aphasia. However, similar treatment effects can be achieved using a non-naming treatment as using a naming treatment, such as modified SFA. Further research is warranted to identify the most important elements of anomia group therapy.

These treatments have produced large overall reductions in PTSD severity and demonstrated the persistence of these gains following treatment. However, the potential effects of ITPs on mental, physical, and social functioning following treatment completion has been largely unexplored. We utilized data from 204 veterans and 5 service members who completed a 3-week CPT-based ITP and 3-month follow-up assessments. We used a two-stage mixed effects location-scale model approach to initially model each participant's amount of PTSD change over time and used these estimates to predict mental, physical, and social functioning three months following treatment. Veterans reported moderate improvements in mental, physical, and social functioning from pre-treatment to 3-month follow-up (ds = 0.52,.42,.55, and.47, respectively). Results indicated that reductions in PTSD severity during treatment, rather than fluctuation in symptom reporting from one assessment to the next, significantly predicted improved mental, physical, and social functioning at follow-up. This study supports the ability of ITPs to enact meaningful improvement in functioning among veterans with PTSD in a short timeframe.
Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapies are being evaluated in multiple sclerosis (MS) for possible neural repair. To date, the potential benefits on cognition have received little attention. The objective of the current study was to comprehensively evaluate cognition before and after MSC therapy in those with MS as part of a double-blind, phase II clinical trial.
Twenty-eight individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of MS were randomly assigned into two study arms. Cognition was evaluated using an expanded Minimal Assessment of Cognitive Function in Multiple Sclerosis (MACFIMS) battery. The battery was administered at Week 0, Week 24, and Week 48 and results were analysed at the group and individual level.
No detectable effect of MSC-mediated neural repair was noted in the short-term with respect to cognition, although some cognitive stability or improvement was observed. Decline was noted in some cognitive areas immediately following the procedure at Week 24; though these were temporary with performance returning to baseline levels at Week 48.
