Mosed restoration.The environmental contamination of antibiotics caused by their over or inappropriate use is a major issue for environmental and human health since it can adversely impact the ecosystems and promote the antimicrobial resistance. Indeed, considering that in the environmental matrices these drugs are present at low levels, the possibility that bacteria exhibit a hormetic response to increase their resilience when exposed to antibiotic subinhibitory concentrations might represent a serious threat. Information reported in this review showed that exposure to different types of antibiotics, either administered individually or in mixtures, is capable of exerting hormetic effects on bacteria at environmentally relevant concentrations. These responses have been reported regardless of the type of bacterium or antibiotic, thus suggesting that hormesis would be a generalized adaptive mechanism implemented by bacteria to strengthen their resistance to antibiotics. Hormetic effects included growth, bioluminescence and motiluld necessarily take due account of the hormesis concept to adequately evaluate the risks to ecosystems and human health posed by antibiotic environmental contamination.The study aimed at investigating the concentrations and geographical patterns of 11 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 15 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in reindeer muscle samples (n = 100) collected from 10 grazing districts in Norway, 2009. Concentrations were examined for patterns related to geographical region as well as age and sex of animals. Concentrations measured for PCBs and OCPs in reindeer meat samples were generally low. Geographical patterns were revealed and districts with previous mining activities, military trenches, or those that were in the vicinity of the Russian border exhibited slightly elevated concentrations compared to other districts. Calves (10 months) exhibited higher concentrations than young (1.5 year) and old animals (>2 years) adjusted for sex, whereas males exhibited higher concentrations than females, adjusted for age. All PCB congeners inter-correlated strongly with each other, whereas oxy-chlordane and heptachlor epoxide were the strongest inter-correlated OCP compounds. Concentrations of PCBs and OCPs in reindeer meat were all considerably lower than the maximum levels set for those contaminants in foodstuffs for safe human consumption by the European Commission. Thus, reindeer meat is not likely to be a substantial contributor to the human body burden of persistent organic pollutants.
Evidence for the effects of temperature variability on risk of congenital anomalies is lacking. We aimed to examine the association of temperature variability during fetal organogenesis period (weeks 3-8 post-conception) with major congenital anomalies.

A retrospective cohort study comprising 4,787,356 singleton live-births and stillbirths in China was performed. We defined two temperature variability indices within gestational week i the standard deviation (SD) of daily temperature (TVSD

Forest streams are mainly subsidized by terrestrial organic detritus, so their functioning and conservation status can be altered by changes in forest biodiversity and composition, particularly if these changes involve the replacement of functional groups or the loss of key species. We examined this issue using a microcosm experiment where we manipulated plant functional diversity (FD) (monocultures and low-FD and high-FD mixtures, resulting from different combinations of deciduous and evergreen Quercus species) and the presence of a key species (Alnus glutinosa), all in presence and absence of detritivores, and assessed effects on litter decomposition, nutrient cycling, and fungal and detritivore biomass. We found (i) positive diversity effects on detritivore-mediated decomposition, litter nutrient losses and detritivore biomass exclusively when A. glutinosa was present; and (ii) negative effects on the same processes when microbially mediated and on fungal biomass. Most positive trends could be explained by the higher litter palatability and litter trait variability obtained with the inclusion of alder leaves in the mixture. Our results support the hypothesis of a consistent slowing down of the decomposition process as a result of plant biodiversity loss, and hence effects on stream ecosystem functioning, especially when a key (N-fixing) species is lost; and underscore the importance of detritivores as drivers of plant diversity effects in the studied ecosystem processes.Despite the fact that cadmium has been reported to be present in crustacean exoskeletons, no study has previously been done to determine when cadmium is deposited to the exoskeleton and what effects cadmium has on the shell-hardening process. This project sought to address these scientific questions using the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, as the model crustacean. It was hypothesized that cadmium would be incorporated into the exoskeleton during post-ecdysial mineralization through ionic mimicry because of the resemblance between cadmium and calcium ions. To test this, soft shell blue crabs were injected with cadmium chloride, and cadmium content in the exoskeleton was subsequently quantified using ICP-OES. Carbonic anhydrase catalyzes the carbon dioxide hydration reaction, which generates bicarbonate ions essential for calcium carbonate formation in the shell. The effect of cadmium injection on epidermal carbonic anhydrase activity as well as exoskeletal calcification was also investigated. It was found that cadmium injection into post-ecdysial Callinectes sapidus significantly increased cadmium content in the exoskeleton, suggesting that cadmium is deposited to the new exoskeleton during post-ecdysial mineralization. Cadmium administration had no effect on epidermal carbonic anhydrase activity or exoskeletal calcification. Interestingly, magnesium content in the exoskeleton was significantly elevated following cadmium treatment. This is most likely a "pseudo" effect stemming from the cadmium-induced reduction in exoskeleton weight. The fact that cadmium had no effect on exoskeletal calcium and that cadmium decreased the weight of the exoskeleton suggests that cadmium has a detrimental effect on the formation of the organic matrix of the exoskeleton. The presence of cadmium in control crabs and exuviae and the amplification of cadmium content in cadmium-treated crabs clearly show that crab shell is a cadmium repository and can be used as a biomarker for aquatic cadmium pollution.Shale gas is a promising unconventional natural gas in the world, however the produced flowback water have severe challenges to surrounding water resource. Conventional reuse technology uses bactericide to control corrosive microorganism, which might bring uncontrolled drug resistance and other secondary pollution. In this study, storage strategy of flowback water was designed as a pre-control stage to decline corrosive microorganism. Dissolved oxygen and temperature were chosen as two key parameters based on microbial physiological and biochemical characteristics. Results showed that under the cross effect of temperature and dissolved oxygen, 15 °C and anaerobic condition had the optimal microorganism control effectiveness. Microorganism amount and live/dead cell ratio decreased by 63.7% and 68.74% respectively compared raw water. COD removal efficiency reduced to only 20%, indicating that the microorganism activity was extremely inhibited. However, microorganism in flowback water was more sensitive to dissolved oxygen compared to temperature. Redundancy analysis confirmed that dissolved oxygen contribution was as high as 91.5% while temperature was not significant (p > 0.05), the contribution rate was only 8.5%. Thermococcus, Archaeoglobus, Thermovirga, Thermotoga and Moorella were the dominated thermophilic, anaerobic and sulfate reduction or metal corrosion microorganism in flowback water, so all these identified microorganisms were control targets. Importantly, all the target microorganisms detected in flowback water were declined after different storage strategies. This study provides an effective storage strategy for flowback water to inhibit the microbial amount and activity without biocides addition, which could help promote the green exploitation of shale gas.Water management decisions are complex ever since they are dependent on adopted politics, social objectives, environmental impacts, and economic determinants. To adequately address hydric resources issues, it is crucial to rely on scientific data and models guiding decision-makers. The present study brings a new methodology, consisting of a combined GIS-MCDA, to prioritize catchments that require environmental interventions to improve surface water quality.
