College students' mental health may be disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic because of the abrupt shift off campus and subsequent loss of a social network and potential long-term impact on job prospects.

We sought to assess the nature of COVID-19's mental health impact among a sample of undergraduates who were experiencing the pandemic as it occurred in real time.

In total, 140 college students completed smartphone-based ecological momentary assessments of anxiety and optimism related to COVID-19 and other generic mental health variables 6 times daily.

Participants completed >23,750 surveys. Overall, >75% of these surveys indicated at least some level of anxiety about COVID-19. On average, the proportion of responses each day at the highest levels of anxiety about COVID-19 was 7 times greater than the proportion of responses at the highest levels of non-COVID-19-specific anxiety. Structural change analyses indicated a significant downward trend in COVID-19 anxiety after the first week of June, but even at the lowest point, >15% of the participants in the sample still reported high levels of COVID-19 anxiety each day. Participants felt more anxious about COVID-19 on days when the number of new cases and deaths due to COVID-19 were higher. When participants felt anxious about COVID-19, they also felt sad, anxious (in general), and had a greater desire to drink and use drugs. Participants felt more optimistic about COVID-19 when they received more support from others and from their university.

This study demonstrated the widespread mental health impact that COVID-19 has had on college students.

Here we describe the generation and characterization of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines of RP patient with SLC7A14 mutation and his healthy parents. hiPSCs were derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) reprogrammed with integration-free plasmids including the reprogramming factors OCT3/4, SOX2, MYC and KLF4. All the established hiPSC lines showed normal karyotype, pluripotency and differentiation capacity.Human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells expressing Cas9 protein are valuable for the pathogenic mechanism study and drug discovery. These cells can be efficiently induced to differentiate into disease cell models with specific mutations through adding designed sgRNAs. Here, we generated a human gene-editable iPS cell line by gene editing method that Cas9 gene driven by Tet-on operator was perfectly integrated into the human AAVS1 safe harbor locus. The established Cas9 expression iPS cell line named as WMUi013-A can express endogenous pluripotent markers, has the ability to differentiate into the three germ layers, and possesses a normal karyotype.Drug checking is a service for people who use drugs that includes product analysis and an individual interview including results feedback and harm reduction counselling. It uses different analytical methods but few studies demonstrate their value in current practice. The main objective of this work is to compare the analytical performance of IR spectroscopy to laboratory reference method in the context of drug checking in a harm reduction centre. The secondary objectives are to carry out a description of the people who use drugs requesting a product analysis, and to compare the assumed compositions of products purchased with their real compositions. During 2018, all requests for drug testing analysis were included for on-site analysis by IR spectrometry in a harm reduction center and verified by the reference method (UPLC-HRMS) at Bordeaux University Hospital Center. Socioeconomic and product data were also collected. One hundred and thirty-six samples were collected. The results obtained with IR and UPLC-HRMS were compared. IR spectrometry results did not match with reference method in 8 % (n=11) of cases, corresponding to blotters, cannabis and some psychoactive substances present in mixture or in small quantities. Among the products collected, only 5.1 % (n=7) did not correspond to the declared product, either alone or with adulterants. The IR spectrometer allows a simple and rapid detection of at least one molecule, most often the one of interest. Ebselen mw However, it is limited to powder and tablet type matrices and is not suitable for blotters, cannabis, mixed or low content substances for which high resolution mass spectrometry remains the reference method.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a congenitally inherited disease characterized by progressive muscle damage and loss of function in children, which currently has no cure. Parents of children with DMD go through significant challenges when caring for a child with this condition.

The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of Jordanian parents caring for a child with DMD.

We utilized qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological design. Ten pairs of parents of children with DMD were interviewed at their homes from the southern region of Jordan. The Participant verbal as well as nonverbal cues were recorded during the interview. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's 7-step method.

Parents experienced psychosocial, emotional, and financial problems, which affected family dynamics and the quality of life. Themes emerged were face the new disease, caring for our child and handling the situation, staying in contact with the outside world, and career options and opportunities.

Parents experienced feelings of stress and anxiety mixed with emotions of hopelessness. Parents relieved anxiety by sharing feelings with others, assuring themselves and accepting the reality of child's illness.

It is necessary that parents undergo psychological counseling individually or by joining groups who had similar experiences. Follow-up by experts through the coping process. Addressing equity services in the country is necessary.

Parents of children with chronic kidney disease face tremendous burdens of care, having to adopt dual roles as parents and informal healthcare providers, delivering home-based clinical care, despite lacking proper qualification and training.

A systematic review of qualitative studies was conducted to identify sources of distress among parents caring for children with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis, excluding children who have had renal transplants. Guided by PRISMA guidelines, six electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, Cochrane, Google Scholar) were searched for relevant articles published in English. A three-step inductive thematic synthesis method outlined by Thomas and Harden (2018) was used to form descriptive themes and the Critical Appraisal Skill Program (CASP) qualitative checklist was utilised to appraise the quality of included articles.

A total of 23,129 title and abstracts were reviewed; 161 full texts were reviewed. Thirteen papers, with the experiences of 183 parents, met the inclusion criteria. Most included studies were conducted in Western countries, which may limit the applicability of this review to other countries.

Five themes emerged disease-related distress, personal struggles, family structure, lack of resources and unrealistic social expectations.

Parents of children with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis experienced distress at multiple levels.

Healthcare professionals caring for children with chronic kidney disease could screen parents early for distress, and refer them to relevant psychosocial and community services.

These cognitive shortcuts save time, but if unexamined, can undermine the ethical commitment to "respect…the inherent dignity, worth, unique attributes, and human rights of all individuals," (ANA Code, 2015, p.1). This is especially concerning when considering vulnerable populations, such as families with children who are dependent on tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation (trach-vent-dependent). Studies of parent caregivers of children who are trach-vent-dependent raise questions of whether implicit bias contributes to the stigmatization these families experience. Practical strategies to activate the Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements can mitigate the risks of stigmatization and vulnerability, resulting in improved shared decision making and care for these patients and families. An objective tool to guide patient- and family-centered inquiry and care can anchor nurses' ethical practice.Hampered by the absence of evidence and theoretical model of biological semiconductors, the unidirectional electron transport via the p-n junction between functional proteins and abiotic materials remains a challenge for bioelectronics. Bacteriorhodopsin (bR), a representative transmembrane protein, has demonstrated exceptional optoelectronic effects in bR/semiconductor hybrid materials and offers a possible pathway for addressing this challenge. In the present work, for the first time, bR is proved to be an n-type semiconductor with an indirect electron transition. Through the photo-electrochemical method used for studying the p-n junction effect in the bR and p-type semiconductor combined electrodes, we reached several important conclusions The self-corrosion of bR integrated Cu2O electrodes is delayed for about 36 times; The photocurrent of bR integrated CuSCN electrodes is enhanced by about 400%, which is attributed to the directional migration of electrons via the p-n junction. Furthermore, the ultrafast kinetics we have explored, shows that the injection of electrons shortens the lifetime of the intermediate state O640 from 37.3 μs to 20.1 μs, what means that the protons transport rate accompanying the bR photocycle process is accelerated. Therefore, we believe that the concept of the bio-p-n junction and the mechanism of electron coupled proton transport, which are discussed herein, will promote useful research on bioelectronic applications for bR and its homologs.
India faces a high and growing burden of hypertension, which is an important cerebrovascular risk factor, especially in elderly persons. Poor awareness contributes to delays in seeking health care, which is undesirable given the emergent nature of stroke. Literature regarding awareness in this subgroup of the population is scarce. Our objective was to assess awareness regarding cerebrovascular disease among elderly persons with hypertension residing in a rural area of Bangalore district, and estimate their individual risk of stroke.

We randomly selected 144 elderly hypertensives residing in a rural area in Bangalore district from a list of known hypertensives maintained as part of a population-based senior citizen health service. We developed an open-ended, face-validated questionnaire, which was administered following informed consent, to assess stroke awareness. We defined good awareness as knowing at least one risk factor, one warning sign, and having the knowledge that stroke requires immediate treatment.
