Variation in total egg diameter and relative fecundity were influenced by a combination of environmental conditions, which changed depending on the trait and sampling period. An integrated approach involving biochemical and reproductive traits is essential for understanding macro-scale patterns in the face of anthropogenic-induced climate change across environmental and latitudinal gradients. An animal's social position within a group can influence its ability to perform important behaviours like eating and resting, but little is known about how social position affects the ability to express what are arguably less important but still rewarding behaviors, such as grooming. We set out to assess if dominance measured at the feeder is associated with increased use of a mechanical brush. Over a 2-year period, 161 dry cows were enrolled in a dynamically changing group of 20 individuals with access to a mechanical brush. We determined dominance using agonistic behaviors at the feeder and retrospectively analyzed brush use for the 12 most, and 12 least dominant individuals during the week before calving. Cows that were more dominant at the feeder used the brush more, especially during peak feeding times. Agonistic interactions at the brush did not differ between dominants and subordinates and were not related to brushing duration. These findings indicate that social position, calculated using competition for feed, affects mechanical brush access such that subordinates use the brush less than dominant cows independent of competition or time of day.Evidence of mobiliary art and body augmentation are associated with the cultural innovations introduced by Homo sapiens at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. Here, we report the discovery of the oldest known human-modified punctate ornament, a decorated ivory pendant from the Paleolithic layers at Stajnia Cave in Poland. We describe the features of this unique piece, as well as the stratigraphic context and the details of its chronometric dating. The Stajnia Cave plate is a personal 'jewellery' object that was created 41,500 calendar years ago (directly radiocarbon dated). It is the oldest known of its kind in Eurasia and it establishes a new starting date for a tradition directly connected to the spread of modern Homo sapiens in Europe. To investigate the dynamics of body mass index (BMI) and height changes in childhood leading to obesity in adolescents. BMI Z-scores were calculated using the LMS (lambda-mu-sigma) method based on yearly height and weight information (age 1.5-15 years) from a nationwide Japanese birth cohort that started in 2001 (n = 26,711). We delineated the trajectories of BMI and height changes leading to obesity at age 15 years using mixed effect models. Children who became obese at the age of 15 years kept relatively high BMI z-scores through childhood for both genders, and had an increasing trend over time as opposed to the normal weight group, with an increasing slope during puberty. Early adiposity rebound was associated with overweight or obesity at the age of 15 years. Age at peak height velocity (APHV) occurred earlier in the obese/overweight group at age 15 years than in the normal weight group, and occurred later in the underweight group. Obese adolescents experienced early adiposity rebound timing and maintained a serial BMI z-score increase throughout childhood, with a greater slope at puberty. An earlier peak in height gain during puberty may have contributed to the observed patterns of BMI change.Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of COVID-19 disease. RT-qPCR has been the primary method of diagnosis; however, the required infrastructure is lacking in many developing countries and the virus has remained a global challenge. More inexpensive and immediate test methods are required to facilitate local, regional, and national management strategies to re-open world economies. Nesuparib clinical trial Here we have developed a SARS-CoV-2 antigen test in an inexpensive lateral flow format to generate a chromatographic result identifying the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen, and thus an active infection, within a patient anterior nares swab sample. Our 15-min test requires no equipment or laboratory infrastructure to administer with a limit of detection of 2.0 × 102 TCID50/mL and 87.5% sensitivity, 100% specificity when tested against 40 known positive and 40 known negative patient samples established by a validated RT-qPCR test.We present a simple and efficient hypothesis-free machine learning pipeline for risk factor discovery that accounts for non-linearity and interaction in large biomedical databases with minimal variable pre-processing. In this study, mortality models were built using gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT) and important predictors were identified using a Shapley values-based feature attribution method, SHAP values. Cox models controlled for false discovery rate were used for confounder adjustment, interpretability, and further validation. The pipeline was tested using information from 502,506 UK Biobank participants, aged 37-73 years at recruitment and followed over seven years for mortality registrations. From the 11,639 predictors included in GBDT, 193 potential risk factors had SHAP values ≥ 0.05, passed the correlation test, and were selected for further modelling. Of the total variable importance summed up, 60% was directly health related, and baseline characteristics, sociodemographics, and lifestyle factors each contributed about 10%. Cox models adjusted for baseline characteristics, showed evidence for an association with mortality for 166 out of the 193 predictors. These included mostly well-known risk factors (e.g., age, sex, ethnicity, education, material deprivation, smoking, physical activity, self-rated health, BMI, and many disease outcomes). For 19 predictors we saw evidence for an association in the unadjusted but not adjusted analyses, suggesting bias by confounding. Our GBDT-SHAP pipeline was able to identify relevant predictors 'hidden' within thousands of variables, providing an efficient and pragmatic solution for the first stage of hypothesis free risk factor identification. The chemical resistance of drugs against any change in their composition and studying the rate of multiwell-multichannel reactions in the liquid phase, respectively, are the important challenges of pharmacology and chemistry. In this article, we investigate two challenges together through studying drug stability against its unimolecular reactions in the liquid phase. Accordingly, multiwell-multichannel reactions based on 1,4-H shifts are designed for simplified drugs such as 3-hydroxyl-1H-pyrrol-2(5H)-one, 3-hydroxyfuran-2(5H)-one, and 3-hydroxythiophen-2(5H)-one. After that, the reverse and forward rate constants are calculated by using the Rice Ramsperger Kassel Marcus theory (RRKM) and Eckart tunneling correction over the 298-360 K temperature range. Eventually, using the obtained rate constants, we can judge drug resistance versus structural changes. To attain the goals, the potential energy surfaces of all reactions are computed by the complete basis set-quadratic Becke3 composite method, CBS-QB3, and th-one based drugs in water solution.Emerging studies are reporting associations between skeletal muscle abnormalities and survival in cancer patients. Cancer prognosis is associated with depletion of essential fatty acids in erythrocytes and plasma in humans. However the relationship between skeletal muscle membrane fatty acid composition and survival is unknown. This study investigates the relationship between fatty acid content of phospholipids in skeletal muscle and survival in cancer patients. Rectus abdominis biopsies were collected during cancer surgery from 35 patients diagnosed with cancer. Thin-layer and gas chromatography were used for quantification of phospholipid fatty acids. Cutpoints for survival were defined using optimal stratification. Median survival was between 450 and 500 days when patients had arachidonic acid (AA) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in muscle phospholipid below the cut-point compared to 720-800 days for patients above. Cox regression analysis revealed that low amounts of AA, EPA and DHA are risk factors for death. The risk of death remained significant for AA [HR 3.5 (1.11-10.87), p = 0.03], EPA [HR 3.92 (1.1-14.0), p = 0.04] and DHA [HR 4.08 (1.1-14.6), p = 0.03] when adjusted for sex. Lower amounts of essential fatty acids in skeletal muscle membrane is a predictor of survival in cancer patients. These results warrant investigation to restore bioactive fatty acids in people with cancer.Sequence recognition of natural scene images has always been an important research topic in the field of computer vision. CRNN has been proven to be a popular end-to-end character sequence recognition network. However, the problem of wide characters is not considered under the setting of CRNN. The CRNN is less effective in recognizing long dense small characters. Aiming at the shortcomings of CRNN, we proposed an improved CRNN network, named CRNN-RES, based on BiLSTM and multiple receptive fields. Specifically, on the one hand, the CRNN-RES uses a dual pooling core to enhance the CNN network's ability to extract features. On the other hand, by improving the last RNN layer, the BiLSTM is changed to a shared parameter BiLSTM network using recursive residuals, which reduces the number of network parameters and improves the accuracy. In addition, we designed a structure that can flexibly configure the length of the input data sequence in the RNN layer, called the CRFC layer. Comparing the CRNN-RES network proposed in this paper with the original CRNN network, the extensive experiments show that when recognizing English characters and numbers, the parameters of CRNN-RES is 8197549, which decreased 133,752 parameters compare with CRNN. In the public dataset ICDAR 2003 (IC03), ICDAR 2013 (IC13), IIIT 5k-word (IIIT5k), and Street View Text (SVT), the CRNN-RES obtain the accuracy of 96.90%, 89.85%, 83.63%, and 82.96%, which higher than CRNN by 1.40%, 3.15%, 5.43%, and 2.16% respectively. In preclinical research, histology images are produced using powerful optical microscopes to digitize entire sections at cell scale. Quantification of stained tissue relies on machine learning driven segmentation. However, such methods require multiple additional information, or features, which are increasing the quantity of data to process. As a result, the quantity of features to deal with represents a drawback to process large series or massive histological images rapidly in a robust manner. Existing feature selection methods can reduce the amount of required information but the selected subsets lack reproducibility. We propose a novel methodology operating on high performance computing (HPC) infrastructures and aiming at finding small and stable sets of features for fast and robust segmentation of high-resolution histological images. This selection has two steps (1) selection at features families scale (an intermediate pool of features, between spaces and individual features) and (2) feature selection performed on pre-selected features families.
