Men's birth intention is an indicator of their sexual health and plays an important role for their child's health and development; however, birth intendedness in fathers with disabilities has been unknown.

This study examines disparities in birth intendedness among fathers with and without disabilities and explores whether the differences vary by marital status or race/ethnicity.

Data from the 2011-2017 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) were used to examine pregnancy intendedness for fathers with (n= 380) and without disabilities (n=1,324) about their last birth in the five years preceding the interview. Multinomial regression models estimated the odds ratios of fathers' disability status on birth intention controlling for covariates. Interaction effects of disability status by marital status or race/ethnicity were also tested.

Fathers with disabilities were 1.89 (95% CI=1.21, 2.95) times as likely to report their last birth as unwanted versus intended compared to those without disabilities after adjusting for covariates. Although married fathers without disabilities were less likely to report unintended birth than their unmarried counterparts, the protective effect of marriage was not evident among fathers with disabilities.

Disabled fathers are at a higher risk of unintended birth compared to nondisabled fathers. These findings highlight the need to increase access to family planning services for disabled men. Further research is needed to better understand the risk factors that contribute to disabled fathers' unintended birth and how these are linked to their child and family well-being.

Premature infants who require oxygen therapy for respiratory distress syndrome often develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic lung disease characterized by interrupted alveologenesis. Disrupted angiogenesis inhibits alveologenesis; however, the mechanisms through which disrupted angiogenesis affects lung development are poorly understood. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are transcription factors that activate multiple oxygen-sensitive genes, including those encoding for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). However, the HIF modulation of angiogenesis in hyperoxia-induced lung injury is not fully understood. Therefore, we explored the effects of roxadustat, an HIF stabilizer that has been shown to promote angiogenesis, in regulating pulmonary angiogenesis on hyperoxia exposure.

C57BL6 mice pups reared in room air and 85% O
were injected with phosphate-buffered saline or 5mg/kg or 10mg/kg roxadustat. Their daily body weight and survival rate were recorded. Their lungs were excised for histology and angiogenic factor expression analyses on postnatal Day 7.

Exposure to neonatal hyperoxia reduced body weight; survival rate; and expressions of von Willebrand factor, HIF-1α, phosphor mammalian target of rapamycin, VEGF, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase and increased the mean linear intercept values in the pups. Reversine Roxadustat administration reversed these effects.

Hyperoxia suppressed pulmonary vascular development and the expression of proangiogenic factors. Roxadustat promoted pulmonary angiogenesis on hyperoxia exposure by stabilizing HIF-1α and upregulating the expression of proangiogenic factors, indicating its potential in clinical and therapeutic applications.

Hyperuricemia has been increasingly prevalent and linked to future cardio-metabolic risks in adolescent population. The study aims to explore the relationship between anthropometric indices and hyperuricemia among adolescent athletes.

This was a cross-sectional study of 387 student athletes (218 males and 169 females; mean age, 17.4 ± 1.3 years) in Northern Taiwan in 2013-2015. We exhibited the prevalence of hyperuricemia among this population, and tested the association of serum uric acid levels with different anthropometric parameters in males and females respectively.

A total of 59 (27.1%) male and 37 (21.8%) female adolescent athletes had hyperuricemia. Both in male and female adolescents, several obesity-related anthropometric parameters were significantly higher in hyperuricemia groups than in non-hyperuricemia groups. The odds of having hyperuricemia significantly increased with increasing BMI, BMI z-score, waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio in logistic regression analysis. There was a U-shaped association between uric acid level and body fat percentage (BF%) in both genders. Subjects whose BF% in lowest-body-fat-percentage quintile (quintile 1) and highest-body-fat-percentage quintile (quintile 5) had higher mean serum uric acid level than subjects whose BF% in the middle three quintiles. In both genders, the odds ratio (OR) of having hyperuricemia in subjects whose BF% in quintile 1 remained significantly higher than the OR in the middle three quintiles (the reference) after adjusting for age and BMI z-score.

In addition to the positive association between obesity and hyperuricemia, there is a U shape association between BF% and prevalence of hyperuricemia among adolescent athletes of both genders.

Distinguishing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia from other lung diseases is often difficult, especially in a highly comorbid patient population in a low prevalence region. We aimed to distinguish clinical data and computed tomography (CT) images between COVID-19 and other lung diseases in an advanced care hospital.

We assessed clinical characteristics, laboratory data, and chest CT images of patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients who were suspected of having COVID-19 between February 20 and May 21, 2020, at the University of Tokyo Hospital.

Typical appearance for COVID-19 on CT images were found in 24 of 29 COVID-19 cases and 21 of 168 non-COVID-19 cases, according to the Radiological Society of North America Expert Consensus Statement (for predicting COVID-19, sensitivity 0.828, specificity 0.875, positive predictive value 0.533, negative predictive value 0.967). When we focused on cases with typical CT images, loss of taste or smell, and close contact with COVID-19 patients were exclusive characteristics for the COVID-19 cases. Among laboratory data, high fibrinogen (P<0.01) and low white blood cell count (P<0.01) were good predictors for COVID-19 with typical CT images in multivariate analysis.

In a relatively low prevalence region, CT screening has high sensitivity to COVID-19 in patients with suspected symptoms. When chest CT findings are typical for COVID-19, close contact, loss of taste or smell, lower white blood cell count, and higher fibrinogen are good predictors for COVID-19.

The aim of this study was to develop pre-procedural intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-based models for predicting the occurrence of stent underexpansion.

Although post-stenting IVUS has been used to optimize percutaneous coronary intervention, there are no pre-procedural guidelines to estimate the degree of stent expansion and provide preemptive management before stent deployment.

A total of 618 coronary lesions in 618 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention were randomized into training and test sets in a 51 ratio. Following the coregistration of pre- and post-stenting IVUS images, the pre-procedural images and clinical information (stent diameter, length, and inflation pressure; balloon diameter; and maximal balloon pressure) were used to develop a regression model using a convolutional neural network to predict post-stenting stent area. To separate the frames with from those without the occurrence of underexpansion (stent area<5.5mm
), binary classification models (XGBoost) were deve avoid stent underexpansion as a preventable cause of stent failure.
The aim of this study was to investigate age-related outcomes of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) as assessed in a nationwide, prospective, multicenter cohort study.

TAVR is the preferred treatment for elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis and is expanding into lower age groups.

Data from the SwissTAVI Registry were analyzed. Clinical outcomes were compared between patients 70 years of age or younger (n=324), 70 to 79 years of age (n=1,913), 80 to 89 years of age (n=4,353), and older than 90 years of age (n=507). Observed deaths were correlated with expected deaths in the general Swiss population using standardized mortality ratios.

Between February 2011 and June 2018, 7,097 patients (mean age 82.0 ± 6.4 years, 49.6% women) underwent TAVR at 15 hospitals in Switzerland. Procedural characteristics were similar; however, older patients more often had discharge to the referring hospital or a rehabilitation facility after TAVR. Using adjusted analyses, a linear trencreasing age is associated with a linear trend for mortality, stroke, and pacemaker implantation during early and longer-term follow-up after TAVR. Standardized mortality ratios were higher for TAVR patients younger than 90 years of age compared with expected rates of mortality in an age- and sex-matched Swiss population. (SWISS TAVI Registry; NCT01368250).
Readmission after bariatric surgery may to lead to fragmentation of care if readmission occurs at a facility other than the index hospital. The effect of readmission to a nonindex hospital on postoperative mortality remains unclear for bariatric surgery.

To determine postoperative mortality rates according to readmission destinations.

Nationwide analysis of all surgical facilities in France.

Multicenter, nationwide study of adult patients undergoing bariatric surgery from January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2018. Data from all surgical facilities in France were extracted from a national hospital discharge database.

In a cohort of 278,600 patients who received bariatric surgery, 12,760 (4.6%) were readmitted within 30 days. In cases of readmission, 23% of patients were admitted to a nonindex hospital. Patients readmitted to a nonindex facility had different characteristics regarding sex (men, 23.6% versus 18.2%, respectively; P < .001), co-morbidities (Charlson Co-morbidity Index, .74 versus .53, respectively; P < .
