Siderosis bulbi may occur as a result of retained intralenticular foreign bodies (ILFBs) that were missed during examination in patients with self-sealing wounds and without a significant decrease in visual acuity. This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics and visual outcomes of ILFBs with self-sealing corneal penetrating wounds.

Fifteen eyes of 15 patients with ILFBs and self-sealing corneal penetrating wounds, seen between October 2014 and September 2019, were retrospectively analyzed. Data regarding the patient demographics, clinical features, surgical procedure, and initial and final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were analyzed.

All patients were male with a mean age of 41 years. The foreign bodies passed through the cornea, sometimes through the iris, through the anterior capsule, and finally localized in the lens. All ILFBs were pointed and metallic objects and were successfully removed with phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Anterior capsule violation was found in three eyes, but no posterior capsule rupture was found. CDK inhibitor review The IOL was placed in a capsule bag in all the cases. The BCVA ranged from 20/200 to 20/25 preoperatively and improved to between 20/32 and 20/20 at the last follow-up visit. The IOLs were well-centered. Apart from posterior capsule opacity in four eyes, no other postoperative complications were found.

In patients with a pointed metallic ILFB and self-sealing corneal penetrating wounds (with or without cataracts), early diagnosis and removal of the metallic ILFB combined with lens removal and IOL implantation may avoid late complications and achieve good visual outcomes.

This study aims to evaluate the quality of discharge teaching and readiness for discharge of fundus disease patients treated with day surgery and understand the role of social support between them.

This was a cross-sectional descriptive correlational survey. Through convenient sampling, fundus disease patients treated with day surgery from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, China, were recruited. Data were collected using demographic and disease-related information, quality of discharge teaching scale, readiness for hospital discharge scale, and social support scale.

255 fundus disease patients treated with day surgery were recruited at last. The mean total score of readiness for discharge, quality of discharge teaching, and social support in patients with fundus disease were 157.91 (SD = 26.68), 122.97 (SD = 21.55), and 36.32 (SD = 7.60), respectively. Participants with stronger social support had better discharge teaching and then had higher readiness for discharge. Social support played a partial mediator ischarge teaching to enhance the readiness for discharge of fundus disease patients treated with day surgery.During the prodromal phase of schizophrenia with its complex and insidious clinical picture, electroencephalographic recordings detect widespread oscillation disturbances (or oscillopathies) during the wake-sleep cycle. Neural oscillations are electrobiomarkers of the connectivity state within systems. A single-systemic administration of ketamine, a non-competitive NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist, transiently reproduces the oscillopathies with a clinical picture reminiscent of the psychosis prodrome. This acute pharmacological model may help the research and development of innovative treatments against psychotic transition. Transcranial electrical stimulation is recognized as an appropriate non-invasive therapeutic modality since it can increase cognitive performance and modulate neural oscillations with little or no side effects. Therefore, our objective was to set up, in the sedated adult rat, a stimulation method that is able to normalize ketamine-induced increase in gamma-frequency (30-80 Hz) oscillations and decrease in sigma-frequency (10-17 Hz) oscillations. Unilateral and bipolar frontoparietal (FP), transcranial anodal stimulation by direct current ( less then +1 mA) was applied in ketamine-treated rats. A concomitant bilateral electroencephalographic recording of the parietal cortex measured the stimulation effects on its spontaneously occurring oscillations. A 5 min FP anodal tDCS immediately and quickly reduced, significantly with an intensity-effect relationship, the ketamine-induced gamma hyperactivity, and sigma hypoactivity at least in the bilateral parietal cortex. A duration effect was also recorded. The tDCS also tended to diminish the ketamine-induced delta hypoactivity. These preliminary neurophysiological findings are promising for developing a therapeutic proof-of-concept against neuropsychiatric disorders.
Qatar has witnessed significant reforms in its health care system, including the care of cancer patients. In 2011, the National Cancer Strategy was released with the aim to deliver a high standard of care to cancer patients across the country. We sought to investigate the featuring trends in the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of lung cancer in Qatar following the publication of the National Cancer Strategy.

We conducted a retrospective cohort study documenting the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of primary lung cancer cases in Qatar diagnosed from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2018.

The overall age-standardized incidence rate was 8.7 per 100 000 persons (11.6 per 100 000 and 5.4 per 100 000 persons for males and females, respectively). The one, three, and five-year overall survival rates were 67.0%, 48.0%, and 28.0%, respectively. The three-year overall survival rates for stages I, II, III, and IV were 97.0%, 78.0%, 52.0%, and 31.0%, respectively. The three-year survival ratescountry should consider the changing patterns in lung cancer incidence when planning future preventive strategies. We present a case that was initially diagnosed as non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction following a blunt chest trauma from left lateral contusion. Coronary angiography and later cardiac computed tomography were performed that showed narrowing and dissection of the distal circumflex and first obtuse marginal branch artery, which was treated medically without any coronary intervention.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common problem associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). There have been anecdotal reports of the efficacy of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2Is) in improving liver function parameters in those with concomitant T2DM and NAFLD/NASH. We sought to systematically evaluate the evidence of SGLT2Is in improving liver function parameters in T2DM patients with NAFLD, considering the risks of random error based on trial sequential analysis (TSA). We also performed a meta-analysis based on a random-effects model.

A systematic literature search was performed using the Medline, Cochrane, and Embase databases from inception to 20 October 2018. Primary outcome for meta-analyses was the changes in hepatic enzyme levels (alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase). We also performed a meta-analysis on changes in insulin resistance, glycemic, and lipid parameters usiThis study indicated that canagliflozin effectively improves liver function parameters among patients with diabetes, while dapagliflozin is more effective in improving glycemic indices and insulin sensitivity.
Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) is a reliable, safe, instant, and inexpensive score for prognosticating patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) due to its ability to reflect ongoing changes of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome associated with AP. Our study sought to determine an optimal MEWS value in predicting severity in AP and determine its accuracy in doing so.

Patients diagnosed with AP and admitted to a single institution were analyzed to determine the value of MEWS in identifying severe AP (SAP). The highest MEWS (hMEWS) score for the day and the mean of all the scores of a given day (mMEWS) were determined for each day. Sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value (NPV), and positive predictive values (PPV) were calculated for the optimal MEWS values obtained.

Two hundred patients were included in the study. The data suggested that an hMEWS value > 2 on day one is most accurate in predicting SAP, with a specificity of 90.8% and PPV of 83.3%. An mMEWS of > 1.2 on day two was the most accurate in predicting SAP, with a sensitivity of 81.2%, specificity of 76.6%, PPV of 69.8%, and NPV of 85.9%. These were found to be more accurate than previous studies.

MEWS provides a novel, easy, instant, repeatable, and reliable prognostic score that is comparable, if not superior, to existing scoring systems. However, its true value may lie in its use in resource-limited settings such as primary health care centers.

Chondrosarcomas are rare tumors with a variable biological characteristic. Their treatment clinically and surgically is controversial. Analysis of the clinical statistics and prognostic factors of pelvic chondrosarcoma provides a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

A total of 73 cases of chondrosarcoma were collected, including 24 pelvic samples, from 2008 to 2017 from the hospital database and divided into two groups pelvic chondrosarcoma and non-pelvic chondrosarcoma. The clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of pelvic chondrosarcoma were analyzed using different statistical methods.

Among the 24 pelvic chondrosarcoma patients, the ratio of male to female was 1.41, and the median age was 43.5 years. According to the classification proposed by Enneking, there were five grade I, 14 grade II, and five grade III. Histological grading of chondrosarcoma was grade I in one case, II in 15 cases, and III in eight cases. The histological type was 17 conventional, three dedifferentiated, twan experienced team of specialists. Pelvic chondrosarcoma has a higher local recurrence rate than the other sites and tends to result in amputation. Early local recurrence after surgery indicates a poor prognosis.α-synuclein is an increasingly prominent player in the pathology of a variety of neurodegenerative conditions. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects mainly the dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain. Typical of PD pathology is the finding of protein aggregations termed 'Lewy bodies' in the brain regions affected. α-synuclein is implicated in many disease states including dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease. However, PD is the most common synucleinopathy and continues to be a significant focus of PD research in terms of the α-synuclein Lewy body pathology. Mutations in several genes are associated with PD development including SNCA, which encodes α-synuclein. A variety of model systems have been employed to study α-synuclein physiology and pathophysiology in an attempt to relate more closely to PD pathology. These models include cellular and animal system exploring transgenic technologies, viral vector expression and knockdown approaches, and models to study the potential prion protein-like effects of α-synuclein.
