Inflammation, thrombosis and oxidative stress are rarely studied together when wine's biological activity is concerned; hence the existing literature lacks a holistic point of view in the biological outcome. The scope of the present study is to parallel evaluate the effect of wine extracts on those mechanisms. Ten wine varieties and two different extraction methods were used leading to five extracts for each wine total lipids (TL) and fractions with different phenolic compound classes (FI, FII, FIII and FIV). Their effect on oxidative stress, platelet aggregation and the secretion of cytokines from mononuclear cells was measured and a biological score was calculated. FII of white wines is the most potent extract and the extracts FIII and TL are following. Specifically, FII had higher anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory score while all three fractions had a similar anti-platelet score. Furthermore, FII and FIII extracts were the most potent red wine extracts and revealed the highest anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory scores. White wine FII extracts were more potent than the red wine ones while FI and FIV extracts of red wine were more potent than the white wine ones. In conclusion, the protective effect of a wine is independent of its color but is strongly associated with its microconstituents profile. FII extract revealed the highest biological score and further examination is needed in order to identify the compounds that are responsible for the aforementioned actions.Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Vancomycin (VAN) has been used as the gold standard treatment for invasive MRSA infections for decades but, unfortunately, the reliance of VAN as the primary treatment option against these infections has led to a reduction in VAN susceptibility in MRSA isolates. Although daptomycin (DAP) is another common treatment option against invasive MRSA infections, it has been shown that the development of VAN resistance can lead to DAP nonsusceptibility. VAN or DAP backbone regimens in combination with other antibiotics has been advocated as an alternative approach to improve patient outcomes in VAN/DAP-susceptible infections, enhance outcomes in infections caused by isolates with reduced VAN/DAP susceptibility, and/or prevent the emergence of VAN/DAP resistance or further resistance. A peer-reviewed literature search was conducted using Medline, Google Scholar and PubMed databases. The primary purpose of this review is to describe the mechanisms and epidemiology of MRSA isolates with a reduction in VAN and/or DAP susceptibility, evaluate in vitro and in vivo literature describing combination therapy (CT) against MRSA isolates with reduced VAN and/or DAP susceptibility and describe studies involving the clinical outcomes of patients treated with CT against invasive MRSA infections.Algae have long been exploited commercially and industrially as food, feed, additives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizer, but now the trend is shifting towards the algae-mediated green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs). Among the diverse range of algae, the most widely investigated algae for the biosynthesis of NPs documented are brown, red, blue-green, micro and macro green algae. Due to the biocompatibility, safety and unique physico-chemical properties of NPs, the algal biosynthesized NPs have also been studied for their biomedical applications, which include anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-cancerous, anti-fouling, bioremediation, and biosensing activities. In this review, the rationale behind the algal-mediated biosynthesis of metallic, metallic oxide, and bimetallic NPs from various algae have been reviewed. Furthermore, an insight into the mechanism of biosynthesis of NPs from algae and their biomedical applications has been reviewed critically.The species classification of Cambodian freshwater pufferfish is incomplete and confusing, and scientific information on their toxicity and toxin profile is limited. In the present study, to accumulate information on the phylogeny and toxin profile of freshwater pufferfish, and to contribute to food safety in Cambodia, we conducted simultaneous genetic-based phylogenetic and toxin analyses using freshwater pufferfish individuals collected from Phnom Penh and Kratie (designated PNH and KTI, respectively). Phylogenetic analysis of partial sequences of three mitochondrial genes (cytochrome b, 16S rRNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) determined for each fish revealed that PNH and KTI are different species in the genus Pao (designated Pao sp. A and Pao sp. B, respectively). A partial sequence of the nuclear tributyltin-binding protein type 2 (TBT-bp2) gene differentiated the species at the amino acid level. Instrumental analysis of the toxin profile revealed that both Pao sp. A and Pao sp. B possess saxitoxins (STXs), comprising STX as the main component. link2 In Pao sp. A, the toxin concentration in each tissue was extremely high, far exceeding the regulatory limit for STXs set by the Codex Committee, whereas in Pao sp. B, only the skin contained high toxin concentrations. link3 The difference in the STX accumulation ability between the two species with different TBT-bp2 sequences suggests that TBT-bp2 is involved in STX accumulation in freshwater pufferfish.In this work, we introduced fabrication and interrogation of simple and highly sensitive fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensors based on ball resonators built on the tip of single-mode fibers. The probes have been fabricated through a CO2 fiber splicer, with a fast (~600 s) and repeatable method. The ball resonator acted as a weak interferometer with a return loss below -50 dB and was interrogated with an optical backscatter reflectometer measuring the reflection spectrum. The ball resonators behaved as weak interferometers with a shallow fringe and a spectrum that appeared close to a random signal, and RI sensitivity could be measured either through wavelength shift or amplitude change. In this work, we reported four samples having sensitivity ranges 48.9-403.3 nm/RIU and 256.0-566.2 dB/RIU (RIU = refractive index unit). Ball resonators appeared as a sensitive and robust platform for RI sensing in liquid and can be further functionalized for biosensing.Despite the considerable focus on job characteristics and individual differences in job crafting research, the influence of social factors on job crafting has not been well-acknowledged. Based on social interaction and job crafting literature, this meta-analysis estimates the associations between social factors (i.e., organizational insiders and outsiders) and job crafting, and how these social factors contribute to employee outcomes through their job crafting. Based on a sample of 51 empirical studies that included 54 independent samples (N = 17,863), we found that social factors of positive leadership styles (e.g., empowering and transformational) and coworker support were positively related to employee job crafting. Moreover, leadership showed a stronger correlation with employee job crafting than coworker support and Leader-Member-Exchange (LMX). Further, our study showed that employee job crafting positively mediates the relationships between social factors and work outcomes (e.g., job performance and well-being). Our study contributes to job crafting literature by integrating social factors into the job crafting model and demonstrating that the social context of work (in particular organizational insiders) plays a crucial role in shaping employees' job crafting behavior. We also emphasize the critical role that job crafting plays in transmitting valuable social resources into improved work outcomes. Building on our results, we provide future direction for job crafting research and discuss how our results can imply practice in terms of job crafting training.In this paper, we consider amaranth starch extracted from the seeds of Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. An amphiphilic character is conferred to the starch by a chemical modification, which involves an esterification by lauroyl chloride at three modification levels. The degree of substitution (DS) after the modification ranged from 0.06 to 1.16. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of fatty acyl chains on the surface of the esterified starches. The hydrophobicity of starches was confirmed by their adsorption isotherms, which showed a decrease in the moisture adsorption of lauroylated as DS increased. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a higher crystallinity, which was observed in the two samples subjected to the highest levels of modification. A higher crystallinity is related to a higher gelatinization enthalpy. These results are in agreement with the thermal characterization obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). An inhibition of the retrogradation properties of lauroylated amaranth starches was also observed.The glycemic response produced by a food depends on both the glycemic index of the food itself, and on how the body reacts to the food as it is consumed and digested, in turn dependent on sensory cues. Research suggests that taste stimulation can induce the cephalic phase insulin response before food has reached the digestion, priming the body for an incoming glucose load. This glycemic response can consequently affect the amount of food consumed in a subsequent meal. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on satiety of four preloads that differed in caloric content and sensory properties, in a small group of female and male participants (n = 10). Water, sucrose, sucralose, and maltodextrin were used to represent 4 different conditions of the preload, with or without energy, and with or without sweet taste. Individual plasma glucose concentrations were sampled at baseline, 45 min after consuming the preload, and after consuming an ad-libitum test meal. Hunger, fullness, desire to eat, and thoughts of food feeling were assessed every 15 min using visual analog scales. Results in male participants when comparing two solutions of equal caloric content, maltodextrin and sucrose, showed that plasma glucose concentration spiked in the absence of taste input (p = 0.011). Maltodextrin, while providing calories does not have the sweet taste that can serve to trigger cephalic phase insulin release to attenuate an incoming glucose load, and was accompanied by significantly greater change in feelings of satiety than with the other preloads. Despite the difference in postprandial blood glucose, the energy consumed in the test meal across the treatments was not significantly different in either males or females. Results highlight the importance of taste in stimulating the body for the efficient and effective glucose homeostasis.
