Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f. (TW) is widely used to treat autoimmune and inflammatory diseases; however, its development and application is limited by its significant association with liver injury. The compound formula Qingluotongbi (QLT) employs TW as its main component and is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis with no adverse reactions, suggesting that QLT may reduce the liver toxicity of TW.

We examined whether TW interferes with lipid metabolism to induce liver injury, and evaluated the protective effect of QLT in in vivo and in vitro experiments.

After administration of QLT and its ingredients, HepaRG cells and SD rats were tested for biochemical indicators, hepatocytes lipid changes, and rat liver pathological changes, and then we analyzed for the gene expression of liver X receptor α (LXRα), endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) key proteins, sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), and lipid-synthesizing enzymes. In HepaRG cells, the protein expression of glucose-regulated proteiesizing enzymes, leading to increased lipid synthesis in hepatocytes to result in liver injury. QLT inhibited the LXRα-ERS-SREBP-1c pathway and reduced abnormal lipid synthesis in hepatocytes and the hepatotoxicity of TW.
Danzhi-Xiaoyao-San (DXS), as a canonical Chinese medicine formula, possessing the functions of the soothing liver, invigorating spleen, clearing heat, and cooling blood, has been widely used for the treatment of depression.

This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials aimed to examine the efficacy of DXS in depression.

We performed a literature search in several databases, e.g., PUBMED, until August 2021 and conducted the meta-analysis using Review Manager 5.3 software. The random-effects model and fixed-effects model were used to synthetize extracted data.

Finally, this meta-analysis showed that comparing with antidepressants, DXS exhibited similar effect to antidepressants in the clinical comprehensive effect [RR=1.04, 95% CI (0.77, 1.40); P=0.81] and decrease in Self-Rating Depression Scale scores [WMD=0.89, 95% CI (-6.33, 8.11); P=0.81], while lower effect in Hamilton Depression Scale scores [SMD=-0.29, 95% CI (-0.55, -0.03); P=0.03]; Furthermore, DXS plus antidepressants can significantly improve the clinical comprehensive effect [RR=1.23, 95% CI (1.17, 1.29); P<0.00001] and decrease the Hamilton Depression Scale scores [SMD=1.04, 95% CI (0.51, 1.58); P=0.0001] than pure antidepressants.

This systematic review and meta-analysis approved an efficient role of DXS in improving depression in clinical randomized controlled trials. However, further evidence from large samples and high-quality randomized controlled trials is needed to be investigated for a reliable conclusion about DXS in the treatment of depression.

Cyperi Rhizoma (CR) derives from the rhizome or tuber of Cyperus rotundus L. of Cyperaceae. It is an herbal medicine which has been widely used in different healthcare systems like in China, India, Iran, and Japan. In Chinese medicine, CR could promote the flow of Qi in the Liver and Sanjiao channels, regulate menstruation and alleviate pain. Clinically, CR is used for depression, flatulence, hypochondriac pain, and dysmenorrhea. Thus, it has a long history and significant curative effect for the treatment of various Qi stagnation symptoms.

This review focuses on explaining the major antidepressant mechanisms of CR, and assessing the shortcomings of existing work. Besides, clinical applications, pharmacological effects and their corresponding chemical compositions and quality control of CR have been researched.

We investigated the physiological role of VA supplementation in the ovarian maturation of Astyanax lacustris throughout the non-breeding season. Adult females were distributed in five nutritional treatments, which differed by the amount of VA supplemented in a plant-based diet T1 = 0, T2 = 1800, T3 = 3600, T4 = 7200, and T5 = 14,400 IU kg-1 of VA for 60 days after a period of 16 days feeding on a diet poor in VA to reduce body VA content. Plasma total lipids (TL), lipoproteins, and 17β-estradiol (E2) levels were measured after 30 and 60 days. Somatic indexes and morphophysiological ovarian parameters were calculated and VA concentration was analyzed in the ovaries and liver after 60 days. VA supplementation did not increase the concentration of this nutrient in the liver and ovaries. E2 plasma level increased in animals fed on 3600 IU kg-1 of VA (T3) after 60 days and females from T5 group presented a higher RF after 60 days. Ovarian development increased after 60 days compared to that after 30 days, confirmed by the higher gonadosomatic index (all groups). The supplementation with the highest VA level increased RF and decreased plasma TL (after 30 days) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (after 60 days) concentrations, showing a potential to improve reproduction even during the non-breeding season; however, its nutritional requirements of VA could be higher.Planaria are known for their ability to completely regenerate upon fissioning or experimental amputation. Making the diagnosis of HFpEF is often challenging as patients frequently have multiple co-morbidities and alternative reasons for exercise intolerance that is hallmark to the disease. Additionally, a universal diagnostic algorithm and definition of HFpEF is lacking. The treatment of HFpEF is equally challenging as there has been significant difficulty in identifying therapies to improve survival in HFpEF, and management to date requires intensive optimization of HFpEF risk factors. In this review, we highlight a stepwise approach to the diagnosis and management of HFpEF inclusive of 1) how to establish a clinical diagnosis of HFpEF, 2) when to refer for invasive testing, 3) treatment of HFpEF including pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, and risk factor modification interventions, and 4) when to refer to a dedicated HFpEF center or advanced heart failure specialist. With this systematic stepwise approach to HFpEF management, we aim to improve accurate diagnosis of the disease as well as raise awareness of all available therapeutic options for this challenging patient population. Twelve trained Standardbred racehorses (six stallions and six mares) performed SETs until the horses' blood lactate concentration was at or above 4 mmol/L. The horses were divided into three age groups (2, 3, and 4 years old); each group consists of 4 horses respectively (two male and two female), to evaluate the effects of age and sex on hormonal responses to SET. During each SET, blood samples were taken at rest and after each interval and at the end of SET. Blood was analysed for total and free triiodothyronine (T3, fT3) as well as total and free thyroxine (T4, fT4). The statistical model included three fixed factors (SET, sex and age) and their main interactions. ANOVA analysis revealed that T3 and fT3 were significantly influenced by SETs.
