3 Wheeled Buggies
A 3-wheel buggy is perfect for off-road walking & dealing with terrain, from bumpy pavements to woodland tracks. They are also more easy to manoeuvre up and down kerbs than models with four wheels.
MadeForMums reviews editor Kath tried one of these three-wheelers while with her newborn and three year old daughter, putting it through its paces on the tarmac and on tricky ground. Check out her review here.
Stability
With four wheels and a central point of gravity that's balanced by weight of your child's seat, 4-wheel buggies are generally thought to be more stable than 3-wheelers. But that doesn't mean an older model with three wheels isn't worth considering, as many of these models are made to handle anything from rough terrain to bustling high-streets.
Find a buggie with large rear wheels, as well as an lockable wheel on the front. This makes it more comfortable to drive and less likely to snap apart when you're on rough roads. These all-terrain buggies also come with pneumatic tires that are perfect for handling non-paved surfaces. They can be used even on sandy beaches or tracks through woodlands.
These are also the best buggies to be running with, since they provide great stability over rougher ground and can help you keep pace with your jogging partner. They're also excellent at climbing and descending steep kerbs and a majority have a built-in suspension that ensures your child will enjoy a comfortable ride.
The one factor that makes a 3-wheeled pushchair tricky to maneuver is the large frame, which can make it difficult to squeeze through tight spaces and narrow doors than a four-wheeler. Some manufacturers have solved this issue with a clever design which turns the wheels upside down when they are not in use. This reduces their size and makes them easier to maneuver through doors.
It's also important to consider whether the buggy you choose to use is suitable for your child from birth, or if you're thinking of using it with an infant car seat or carry cot. If so, make sure it has the ability to lie flat and if the design is compatible with other seats and buggy boards (if you're planning to put an infant onboard). A lot of 3-wheelers fold flat, and then be placed upright. This is great when you have limited space in your boot or have limited storage at home. However, some require you to remove the front wheel when folding in order to fit into smaller space.
Manoeuvrability
Three-wheeled buggies are more maneuverable than four-wheeled strollers. They typically have a swivelling wheel on the front which allows you to shift direction quickly and steer using only one hand. Certain models come with wheels that lock to provide stability on rougher terrain. Some models can be used with an additional seat or buggy board, should you decide to grow your family.
If you intend to remove your three-wheeled buggies from the roads that are asphalted, you should choose an option that has pneumatic tyres. 3 wheeled pushchair can handle the most difficult terrain. They may have to be pumped up from time to the point, but they will be more durable and puncture-proof compared to solid tyres. You should look for models with an swiveling front wheel that can be locked to assist you on difficult surfaces.
A single front wheel could indicate that three-wheelers can be more bulkier than buggies with four wheels when folded. Check that your chosen model fits in the boot of your car and is able to be raised if needed. Certain models can be folded with just one hand and are freestanding when collapsed. This will save space in boot spaces that are smaller.
A good three-wheel pushchair can handle most terrains from busy streets to forest tracks. But it's important to consider what you'll be using for your day-to-day use. If you will be making the school run with it, it should be able handle steep slopes and kerbs. If you plan to jog with it, make sure it has a swivelling'stretch front wheel' that is locked. This will help keep the ride stable.
MFM reviewer Kath found her tri-wheeled buggy was able to handle well on urban and countryside walks. She said it was able to negotiate cobbles, rough paths, and bumpy pavements effortlessly and was comfortable while running. It's also a great option for day trips because it is packed with storage space. It has a large, spacious, zip-top basket that is covered and an extended, 50+ UV hood. It is also able to be adapted for baby from birth with an adjustable seat that can be sat on or a carry cot, in addition to being compatible with most popular second-seats and buggy boards.
Fabric Sling Seat
The main difference between a fabric sling and a modular seat is that the fabric sling sits comfortably inside the frame of the buggy instead of sitting on top of it like a modular seat would. This makes it easier to maintain an ergonomically correct position of the baby, resulting in a lower center of gravity that is just the right height. This translates into an easier push, a less hefty curb pop (you do not require as much weight and effort to pop the buggy over the curb's edge) and a better balance and stability.
The sling fabrics that are used in these kinds of buggy seats are extremely durable and easy to clean. 3 wheeled pushchair were designed specifically with applications for sling chairs in mind they are UV-resistant and breathable. They also have a great aging resistance and are very easy to clean using mild soap and water.
If you're a jogger, or like to do some off-roading, an all terrain 3 wheeler will be more suitable than a 4-wheel buggy. These models have a larger base they are more stable and have air-filled tyres that allow for smooth movement over rough terrain.
Maxi-Cosi, a brand known for its car seat range and has now added a brand new 3-wheeler, the Stella to its product line. This all-terrain vehicle has an impressive, spacious and impressively growing travel system seat unit that can be world facing or parent facing and reclines flat with an upgraded 5-point safety harness. It can be used with a car seat or carrycot from birth. It comes with an enormous shopping basket.
For the most discerning buggy owners this 3 wheeler that is luxurious is as beautiful to behold as it is to use. The sleek frame is finished in a stunning pewter black with touches of silver-burnished aluminium all over and gives it a true WOW factor. This is a great choice for parents who are active. It features a spacious, padded seat which can be positioned either parent or world facing. It also has an improved 5-point harness and an entire set of rain covers.
Modular Seat
Modular seating allows for an array of configurations to meet different seating needs. If you want a cozy setting to watch movies or a larger configuration to entertain guests, modular seating can be adjusted easily. Many modular seating systems also come with cushion covers that can be removed, making it easier to clean spills and staining.
Modular Seating is available in different designs to complement your current decor or as an accent piece. A wide range of color, fabric and shape options ensures that you can find an option for modular seating that suits your style. Various functional features are also offered in modular seating, like hidden storage compartments that permit an easy organization and cleaning of living spaces.
3-wheel buggies offer more stability than strollers with four wheels, making them ideal for off-road or all terrain adventures. The large, highly manoeuvrable front wheel allows for a quick and smooth movement, whereas the tyres are typically air filled and have suspension, allowing for a smooth ride on even the roughest roads and trails. They are also ideal for walking up hills since the wheels aren't as close to ground as they are on four wheel pushchairs.
Often 3-wheel prams are a popular choice for parents who enjoy running and jogging with their child because they offer superior mobility and are much more sleek than their 4-wheel counterparts. The GB Upp XL for example has a sleek burnished silver aluminium frame, with an easy fold that can be folded in one hand and forward and rear facing seats. The Babyzen Yoyo has an all black frame, a carrycot that has a fully lie-flat position air-filled tyres, and three recline positions.
Another fantastic all-terrain option is the lightweight, highly manoeuvrable and amazingly elegant Mountain Buggy Sport verso. This buggy can last from birth, with a carrycot included, to toddlerhood with the adjustable seat. It does this all within the footprint of a single buggy.
Duet(tm) is a side-by-side buggy that's compact enough for city life but is also a bit more innovative and controlled. It features a unique fabric sling seat that's positioned in a comfortable frame at the perfect height for the perfect weight distribution to facilitate kerb popping and navigating neighbourhoods and cities.
