3 Wheel Buggies
3 wheel buggies offer superb maneuverability with a stylish and sleek frame. Many of them have an upholstered sling seat that has an incredibly comfortable lie flat bed and perfect weight distribution that is ideal from birth.
The wheels are bigger and usually have suspension to allow for smooth, agile mobility on various terrains. The only drawback is that they could be heavier and bulkier to store & transport.
Stability
Three wheel buggies are remarkably solid - they don't fall over as easily as pushchairs that have four wheels when traveling in a straight line and you'll notice that you can move them more quickly and easily. If you turn or stop abruptly, they may lose stability and even tip over. For this reason, certain manufacturers add an extra wheel to their 3 wheel buggy designs to increase the stability of the chassis.
The extra wheel also helps you tackle off-road terrain. Look out for models with air-filled tyres (also known as pneumatic tyres) because they can deal with off-road trails and other surfaces including rocks, sand, and mud. They'll also usually come with an adjustable front wheel that locks to provide stability on rough ground.
The buggies are easy to maneuver and agile thanks to the 360o front swivel wheel. They also pass the same global stability standards and test as 4-wheel buggies.
If you're looking for a cloth sling seat, they tend to be set lower in the frame than modular seats, so that your baby's center of gravity is closer to the ground which means a smoother ride and a less noticeable kerb pop (you do not need to apply as much pressure or effort to get the buggy up and over the curb).
Most well-known for its car seats, Maxi-Cosi has recently added a light pushchair and travel system to its line-up with the striking Citylife. 3 wheeler pushchair 3-in-1 is ideal for urban life, and comes with a newborn car seat or carrycot. 3 wheeled pushchairs has 4 wheels and uses an exclusive black pewter frame, which the company claims is 'light and compact'. It's just 2cm larger than the Babyzen Yoyo.
Folding
There are many 3 wheel buggies which can be folded compactly and fit into smaller spaces. Many can be folded with a single hand and are easy to wash down. Some of the tiniest models have a simple height-of-handlebar adjustment, while others have adjustable suspensions and an ultraviolet canopy of 50+ that can be extended. Some models may have a large basket and brake levers that are quick-release.
The best 3 wheel buggy for tackling rough terrain
A 3-wheeler will typically be more adept at dealing with off-road terrain than one with four wheels, however both can be stuck in tight spots. A model with larger front and rear wheels will help. This will make them easier to push over uneven ground and will often help with moving up and down the high kerbs.
One option is the new Roma Atlas, which has been praised for its agile handling despite its 3-wheel design. MFM reviewer Kath used it with her infant and her 3-year-old, and said "it is very well-handled over cobbles, bumpy pavements, dirt roads and gravel tracks and also on a few hills."
Stella, the new all-terrain 3-wheel buggy from Maxi-Cosi is another great option. It can be used from birth, if it is used in conjunction with a carrycot. It's a bit bigger than the 4-wheelers that are lighter, but it has air-filled tires and three recline positions and a single-hand fold.
Its most appealing feature is its modularity - it's compatible with all of the brands' car seats and strollers for infants. This means you can build your ideal travel system for day-to-day or longer walks, using only the chassis as a foundation.
Tyres
The tyres for 3 wheel buggies come in a range of styles and materials, and each comes with its pros and cons. For instance, tyres that are filled with air, offer an easy ride and excellent maneuverability while foam-filled tires are more durable. The type of tyre you choose will be determined by your lifestyle and the place it is that you live.
For instance, if you are planning to travel frequently on rough or unpaved terrain, you might be interested in a 3-wheeler that has sturdier tyres. Consider the type of suspension you require. Strong suspensions are useful to deal with humps and bumps but they can also be heavy and add to the overall weight.
The size of the tyre is crucial. Knowing how to read the tyre's size is essential for safety, performance and durability. The combination of letters and numbers on a tyre sidewall may appear confusing, but once you decode it, you can understand the tyre dimensions. For example, a tyre size of "185/70 R14 indicates that the tire is a 185/70 radial that has a 14-inch rim diameter.
PU tires are lighter and more puncture-resistant than rubber tires. If you're unsure whether a pushchair's tires are rubber or PU, simply slide the tires across a smooth surface. If the tires slide smoothly and smoothly, they're made of PU. If they don't then the tires are composed of rubber.
Suspension
The suspension of a three wheel buggy makes it more comfortable for your child because it absorbs any bumps or knocks from rough terrain. Having large wheels, that are air-filled, and lockable to provide stability when jogging crucial to ensure that your buggy will be capable of maneuvering off road surfaces easily.
There are many options for buggy styles that will suit any lifestyle and budget. For example the Mountain Buggy pioneered all terrain agility with its three-wheel buggies. With the perfect geometry and engineering their fabric sling seat is tucked away within the frame, as opposed to sitting on top like modular seats, providing a lower centre of gravity and sitting at the right height for the best weight distribution to easily tackle the kerb pops.
Another great option is the Urban Glide 2 from Thule which boasts a sleek design with a massive, manoeuvrable front wheel, excellent suspension, and a simple handbrake with a twist. MFM reviewer Kath put this buggy through its paces by going for a ride through rough terrain. She was impressed with how it performed admirably and claimed that it "navigates over bumpy grass, cobbles, sidewalks and dirt tracks, and makes it easy to go up and down kerbs".
The Roma Atlas is another popular off road option and similar to the Urban Glide 2, comes in a variety of colors to match your style. It also has an adjustable handlebar, a spacious basket, and an ultraviolet hood that is 50+. You can also pick from a selection of infant car seats that transform the buggy into a pram, including the elegantly designed carrycot plus(tm) which is a comfy lie-flat bed for newborns and babies from 12 months to 12 years old.
Safety
Four wheels make a buggy more stable and less likely to tip over and easier to maneuver. It is also safer for your child as the weight of their body is evenly dispersed across the frame.
A four-wheeled buggy also tends to have a lower center of gravity, making it easier to pop up and over curbs. The fabric sling seat sits in the frame instead of over it as modular seats. This makes for a low-slung seating position, and a lighter buggy that is more easily manoeuvred.
However, if you'd like to go out for an exercise with your child then a 4-wheeler might be better suited since it comes with a suspension system that allows the front wheel to move independently of the rear one to allow you to tackle bumpy roads and rough terrain - just bear in mind not all buggies with 4 wheels are suitable for running (most are NOT like the Phil and Teds). The exception is Mountain Buggies which have a specially designed suspension system that has been tested independently across all kinds of terrain.
