3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeler is perfect for off-roading and provides an easy ride for your child. They are also easier to push and manoeuvre than a four wheel buggy and are especially suitable for those with fabric slings or modular seat units that are placed in a tight position within the frame and provide the best design and weight distribution.
Stability
Three-wheeled vehicles are very stable, which makes them an excellent choice for off-road walking (especially when equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They often feature oversized front wheels, which cope well with kerbs and bumps as well as rough ground. Some have a lockable wheel on the front to provide additional stability while driving on uneven terrain.
It's worth bearing in mind that 3-wheel buggies may have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels, which can mean that they fall over more easily. But, the top 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with an ideal geometry and design to ensure they are solid in all conditions. They should be able to turn at a whim and be able to steer with one hand and have 360o swivelling front wheels which makes them ideal for maneuvering and navigating challenging terrain.
Look for models with pneumatic tyres. pushchair 3 wheels are made to handle nonpaved tracks, and should be able to handle dirt, gravel, rocks, etc. A lot of all-terrain buggies have an swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked to provide added stability when tackling very rough terrain.
A tri-wheeled pram is a great option for those who run or love to speed up the hill. This is especially true if you plan to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, offering a world-facing seat that reclines flat. It also has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your equipment (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's light, compact and suitable for babies and can be used with the use of a car seat or carrycot. It also allows for a bit of light jogging but isn't intended for serious joggers.
Weight
If you're looking for a buggy that can tackle terrain that is difficult, you should select one with big tires. They will be able to handle cobbles, grass, and dirt tracks while providing the smoothest ride for all passengers. They are also ideal for jogging because they come with built-in suspension and are able to climb up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they can be quite heavy to push.
The best 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheeler is highly maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels as well as an adjustable front wheel that locks. It comes with air tyres which do need occasional pumping and it can be used to carry children up to 3. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler enjoyed the design of the seat and she found it easy to steer with her three-year-old child on the board.
Another great option is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, that comes with an adjustable handlebar and a hood made of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. 3 wheeler pushchairs is also easy to move up and down kerbs and fits in a the car's boot space in a small size. It can also be used as a pram that comes with a carrycot or infant car seat for newborns and toddlers.
Fabric sling seats are tucked within the frame of the buggie rather than sitting on top of it as modular seats. This design delivers a lower center of gravity that is at the ideal height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot overestimate how often you'll be doing this when you're a new parent!)
Seating
There are many options for seating in 3 wheelers. For babies it is possible to use the carrycot and (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lying flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) In addition, older babies and toddlers can use the parent-facing or world-facing seat unit that is roomy and padded and does have adjustable ventilation. The seats don't fully recline, but they can be lowered to the lowest point. This should allow your child to have plenty of room and headroom.
A fabric sling seat is also available. It is set snugly inside the frame instead of sitting on top as the modular seat. This provides a lower center of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, particularly on bumpy terrain or over curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this type of seat dealt with obstacles.
This kind of buggy comes with an enormous basket, along with other features that are useful such as an extended hood with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal, and some innovative visibility lights that can be positioned in front of occupants to increase safety on rough terrain.
If you're searching for a stroller that will grow with your family, the sport(tm) is a world first, can accommodate infants and be modified to fit two or three children as they grow, all within one footprint.
Storage
The 3-wheeled frame is much more stable and can be pushed with just one hand. It's also ideal for terrains that are difficult to navigate. However, it means that the basket won't hold the same amount as a 4-wheeled buggy.
A high-quality ATP will come with pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for better comfort, and an excellent suspension. It is also able to take the form of a car seat and carrycot which means you can use it right from the time you are born.
MFM's reviewers have discovered that the 3-wheeler frame can't fit through all the doors in their homes, or small car boot - be sure to check the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded before purchasing if you're worried about space.
It's worth looking for a 3-wheeler that can take 2 (or even 3!) seats once your family grows - these are the best of both worlds and future proof your money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the top of them; it can be used as a single from day dot, and then transforms into twin buggies once your baby begins walking.
Tyres
Air filled tyres are made to provide your child with more comfort while riding by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. They're commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an amazing ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on it made it easy to tackle cobbles and kerbs.
These tyres can sometimes prove difficult to maintain their inflation and need to be replenished regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, and it is recommended to always carry a repair kit and spare inner tube when you're out and out and about.
PU tyres are typically used on pushchairs because they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres but are just as robust. You can recognise PU tire treads by their matte appearance and soft feel. They also slide on flat and tidied surfaces.
If you rub your hands over the tyres, then you can tell if they are PU or rubber. If it feels as if it's moving, then it is a rubber or PU. You can also determine whether your buggy comes with PU tyres sliding them across an even, smooth surface. They should roll smoothly and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.
Foam tyres are commonly utilized in high-performance buggies and Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain associated with this kind of pushchair. The drawback is that the foam can compress and make your buggy feel less stable since it loses its springy nature. Additionally, these kinds of tyres can frequently be noisy, as they create a lot of noise as you turn and navigate your way around the town.
