To develop an olfactory test that can be conducted by an untrained person using common household items and to introduce a German version of the Chemosensory Pleasure Scale for Children (CPS-C(de)).

This olfactory home test was developed in phases including evaluation of odors for suitability in a home setting. Parents of 50 children (ages 6-17) were then equipped with instruction manuals and participants were tested twice in a cross-over design. A validated pediatric olfactory test (the Universal Sniff test (U-Sniff)) served as the comparative gold standard. Additionally, a Chinese-English-German "back-and-forth" translation was conducted to establish the CPS-C(de) and was tested for empirical validity.

Fourteen items were tested for feasibility, and all were identified on a sufficient rate (≥66%, mean ± SD of 93.3% ± 9.5%). Bland Altman Plot analysis between home testing and the U-Sniff test was nearly identical (bias = 0.04). CPS-C(de) showed similar results to the original Chinese version and a moderate correlation was found between CPS-C(de) scores and Body Mass Index of children (r
 = -0.527, p = 0.003).

Remote olfactory testing in children using household items is feasible. The CPS-C(de) may be of value for future olfactory studies.

Medical imaging techniques are widely employed in disease diagnosis and treatment. A readily available medical report can be a useful tool in assisting an expert for investigating the patient's health. A radiologist can benefit from an automatic medical image to radiological report translation system while preparing a final report. Previous attempts on automatic medical report generation task includes image captioning algorithms without taking domain-specific visual and textual contents into account, thus arises the question about credibility of generated report.

In this work, a novel Adaptive Multilevel Multi-Attention (AMLMA) approach is proposed by offering domain-specific visual-textual knowledge to generate a thorough and believable radiological report for any view of a human chest X-ray image. The proposed approach leverages the encoder-decoder framework incorporated with multiple adaptive attention mechanisms. The potential of a convolutional neural network (CNN) with residual attention module (RAMrious X-ray image views and generating the relevant normal and abnormal radiography statements. The proposed model is emphasized on multi-level visual-textual knowledge with adaptive attention mechanism to balance visual and linguistic information for the generation of admissible radiology report. The study of insular variation has fascinated generations of biologists and has been central to evolutionary biology at least since the time of Wallace and Darwin. In this context, using 3D geometric morphometrics, I investigate whether the population of mountain hares (Lepus timidus Linnaeus, 1758) introduced in 1857 on the Swedish island of Hallands Väderö shows distinctive traits in cranial size and shape. see more I find that size divergence follows the island rule, but is very small. In contrast, shape differences, compared to the mainland population, are almost as large as interspecific differences among lineages separated by hundreds of thousands of years of a largely independent evolutionary history. Even if, contrary to what is documented in the scientific literature, mountain hares were present in HV before 1857, the evolutionary history of this population could not have start earlier than the end of the last glaciation (i.e., at least one order of magnitude more recently than the separation of L. timidus from other hare species in this study). My results, thus, suggest that the insular population is a significant evolutionary unit and a potentially important component of the diversity of Swedish mountain hares. This is interesting for evolutionary biologists, but even more relevant for conservationists trying to protect the disappearing population of southern Swedish L. timidus, threatened by changes in climate and the environment, as well as by disease and the introduced European hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778). Island populations of mountain hares, thus, represent a potential source for future reintroductions on the mainland and, as my research shows, an important component of variability to maximize the preservation of the evolutionary potential in a species facing huge environmental changes. This study describes the first reported development of a rapid, generic gradient Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) methodology with targeted triple quadrupole MS/MS using electrospray positive ionisation to detect and unambiguously confirm the identity of 33 substituted 1, 2-diarylethamine (or diphenidine) derivatives in solid drug samples. The in-house synthesised library included a range of derivatives possessing either electron donating/withdrawing substituents, commonly included in combinatorial libraries, of varying size and lipophilicity on the phenyl ring. These test probes were used to investigate if their order of elution and that of their regioisomers were dependent on the position and type of the substituent on the phenyl ring. In addition, investigations into the retention mechanism of the diphenidines under reverse-phase UHPLC conditions were undertaken. Common adulterants found within seized bulk samples were assessed to prove that the methodology was specific, and the developed UHPLC-MS/MS (tG = 10 min) protocol was applied to confirm the identity of the psychoactive components within four seized bulk samples provided by law enforcement.Terconazole (TCZ) was the first triazole antifungal drug launched in the market and has been used in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis. It is also indicated to treat dermatophytosis and fungal ocular infections. However, some of the degradation products from triazole drugs have been reported to be toxic, justifying the need of further investigations about the stability of TCZ. identification of its degradation products and evaluation of their toxicity considering the new possibilities of therapeutic indications. Therefore, in this work a systematic investigation regarding photostability of TCZ was conducted. The active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and its methanolic solution (100 µg mL-1) were kept into a photostability chamber under a UV light (200 Wh/m2; 1.2 × 106 lux/h) during 5 days and 90 min, respectively. A high-efficiency liquid chromatography method was developed for separation and identification of TCZ and its degradation products. The solid-state API remained stable throughout the test, whereas an extensive degradation was observed when in solution. In this case, four degradation products not yet reported in the literature were identified and characterized by electrospray ionization high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-QTOF-MS). Two degradation products presented m/z of 498 and the other two of 496 and 464, respectively. The results suggest that the degradation follows a first-order kinetic and involves the loss of chlorine atoms from the 2,4-dichlrophenyl moiety. Finally, TCZ submitted to the same stress condition as the API solution, increased significantly the opacity during the bovine corneal opacity and permeability test method (BCOP) indicating a potential to cause ocular toxicity. Further studies using the pure photolysis degradation products of TCZ characterized in this work are still necessary to confirm this find.Although a variety of theories have been proposed to explain the etiology of stuttering, the exact neurological origin of it is still uncertain. The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between stuttering severity and ERP measures. The population of this study consisted of 12 adults with moderate, 12 adults with severe stuttering, and 12 fluent speakers as the control group. ERPs were recorded during an auditory task in which subjects should determine an oddball stimulus. The result of mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude analysis revealed significant differences between severe stuttering and fluent speakers groups and between two stuttering groups. Moreover, the result showed significant differences between the three study groups for P300 amplitude. The findings of the present study suggest that the differences in ERP components are existed not only between people who stutter and fluent speakers but also between people with different levels of stuttering severity.
Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has been deemed as the gold standard stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) mode for the treatment of intracranial tumors, cerebrovascular diseases and brain functional diseases. Our study was aimed to systematically evaluate the efficacy, safety, and complications of gamma knife radiosurgery for trigeminal schwannomas.

We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze the clinical outcomes of patients with trigeminal schwannomas treated primarily or adjunctly with GKRS. We searched two databases, Pubmed and Embase, for studies published before January 1, 2021, using GKRS for trigeminal schwannomas. Studies reporting treatment of other schwannomas, or other forms of SRS such as linear accelerator and Cyberknife were excluded to reduce its heterogeneity.

Our search achieved 351 studies, of which 35 were assessed for full-text eligibility. 19 studies were included in the meta-analysis. 456 of 504 patients (0.94, 95% CI 0.91-0.96, I
=3.02%, p<0.01) from 18 studies had local control, and 278 of 489 patients (0.63, 95%CI 0.48-0.78, I
=88.75%, p<0.01) from 16 studies experienced tumor regression or disappearance. 231 of 499 patients (0.50, 95% CI 0.37-0.62; I
=83.89%, P<0.01) from 17 studies had clinical symptoms improved. There was no significant difference in tumor control between those treated with GKRS as either primary treatment or adjuvant to surgery(p=0.390).

GKRS is an efficacious primary and adjuvant method of treating trigeminal schwannomas, with reliable tumor control rates. Randomized controlled trials are needed to further and comprehensively evaluate the benefit-to-risk ratio of gamma knife radiosurgery.

The interview is considered a key factor in selecting residents in various medical and surgical specialties. However, the reliability of the interview process in selecting neurosurgery training program applicants remains largely under-investigated.

To investigate the reliability of the interview process for neurosurgery residency applicants and to evaluate the impact of virtual interviews on this process.

We analyzed the records of neurosurgery residency applicant interviews at our institution between 2016 and 2021. An average of 20 neurosurgery faculty members (clinical and research) interviewed each applicant and graded them 1 (best) to 4 (worst). Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Levene's test were used to assess the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability, respectively.

214 neurosurgery residency applicants were interviewed at a single institution between 2016 and 2021. The mean applicant rating each year ranged from 1.77 to 1.92. Inter-rater agreement was relatively poor in each year, (ICC<0.
