pLN usually presented with proteinuria, and class IV LN was the dominant pathology. Hypertension, nervous-system involvement, treatment non-compliance, and lower eGFR at diagnosis were independent risk factors for poor prognosis of kidney outcomes. Compared with renal remission rate and cumulative overall survival rate, the proportion of targets achieved was not ideal, suggesting T2T strategy should be used to guide pLN management. A higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available as Supplementary information.Zagros Mountains are like an island in the Middle East and they are subjected to changes in climate. Daphne mucronata Royle is an important medicinal plant species preserved in the high elevation regions in these mountains. Maxent species distribution model was used to integrate presence data (2413 points) and environmental variables to model the current and future potential distribution of D. mucronata in Iran. The most important variables were Bio19 with 50.5% contribution, followed by Bio8 and Bio2 with 30% and 11.4% contributions, respectively. The best Maxent model included seven variables, 4 feature types (linear, quadratic, product, and hinge), and had a test AUC value of 0.894. The current potential distribution indicated that 8% of Iran's drylands are suitable for growing D. mucronata and this area could decrease to 5.2% under representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5, and 3.1% under RCP 8.5 due to climate change. Our results suggest that D. mucronata may lose overall about 2.8% and 4.9% of its current distribution under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, respectively, by 2050. There would be only 0.7 and 0.2% gains under RCP 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. The species would locally disappear between 1500- and 2000-m elevation under RCP 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. The establishment of some stations for monitoring the changes in transition zone or lost areas especially on the southeastern parts of Zagros Mountain can help in detecting changes in the future. Additionally, stable habitats may be good target areas for future conservation planning. The present study was conducted to investigate pesticide residues on peach and nectarine. For method verification, samples were spiked at 0.1, 1.0, and 10.0 times of maximum residue limit (MRL) for each pesticide. The Quick-Easy-Cheap-Efficient-Rugged-Safe (QuEChERS)-liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry detection revealed that limit of quantifications (LOQs) of pesticides were below the MRL. The overall recovery was 113.51% with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 17.33% for peach and 113.61% with RSD of 11.44% for nectarine. These figures were within the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (SANTE) recovery limits (60-140%) and the values specified for the repeatability (RSD ≤ 20%). Samples were collected from 5 different stands at Çanakkale open markets for 12 weeks. None of the residues was not ≥ MRL in any samples. Maximum levels of 567.80 and 322.10 μg/kg boscalid were detected in peach and nectarine, respectively, corresponding approximately 1/10 and 1/15 of the MRL. Maximum levels for tebuconazole were about 1/12 and 1/10 of the MRL for peach (47.53 μg/kg) and nectarine (56.90 μg/kg), respectively. Chlorpyrifos residues of all samples were below LOQ. According to our findings and the World Health Organisation Guideline, chronic exposure levels of pesticides were low and there is no risk to human health in terms of 3 pesticides.
Psychiatric sequelae after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are common and may impede recovery. We aimed to assess the occurrence and risk factors of post-injury psychotropic medication use in intensive care unit (ICU)-treated patients with TBI and its association with late mortality.
We conducted a retrospective multi-centre observational study using the Finnish Intensive Care Consortium database. We included adult TBI patients admitted in four university hospital ICUs during 2003-2013 that were alive at 1year after injury. Patients were followed-up until end of 2016. We obtained data regarding psychotropic medication use through the national drug reimbursement database. We used multivariable logistic regression models to assess the association between TBI severity, treatment-related variables and the odds of psychotropic medication use and its association with late all-cause mortality (more than 1year after TBI).
Of 3061 patients, 2305 (75%) were alive at 1year. Of these, 400 (17%) became new psychotropicdds of psychotropic medication use. New use of psychotropic medications after TBI was associated with increased odds of late mortality. Our results highlight the need for early identification of potential psychiatric sequelae and psychiatric evaluation in TBI survivors.A fine-tuned combination of scaffolds, biomolecules, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is used in tissue engineering to restore the function of injured bone tissue and overcome the complications associated with its regeneration. For two decades, biomaterials have attracted much interest in mimicking the native extracellular matrix of bone tissue. To this aim, several approaches based on biomaterials combined with MSCs have been amply investigated. Recently, hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles have been incorporated with polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix as a suitable substitute for bone tissue engineering applications. This review article aims at providing a brief overview on PCL/HA composite scaffold fabrication techniques such as sol-gel, rapid prototyping, electro-spinning, particulate leaching, thermally induced phase separation, and freeze-drying, as suitable approaches for tailoring morphological, mechanical, and biodegradability properties of the scaffolds for bone tissues. Among these methods, the 3D plotting method shows improvements in pore architecture (pore size of ≥600 µm and porosity of 92%), mechanical properties (higher than 18.38 MPa), biodegradability, and good bioactivity in bone tissue regeneration. An electrochemical sensor constructed by intercalated composites was developed for determination of heavy metal ions. The intercalated composites were composed of hydrosulphonyl functional covalent organic frameworks (COF-SH) and graphene (G). The presence of numerous adsorption sites, such as 18 sulfur atoms and 30 nitrogen atoms per big circle of COFs on COF-SH, was beneficial for the accumulation of heavy metals, while the graphene enhanced the electrical conductivity. The obtained sensor under the optimal conditions successfully detected the presence of heavy metal ions in coastal water samples at concentrations ranging from 1 to 1000 μg L-1. The detection limits of Cd (II), Pb (II), Cu (II), and Hg (II) were 0.3, 0.2, 0.2, and 1.1 μg L-1, respectively. Furthermore, the sensor still exhibited good stability after multiple uses less than 5%. When it is used in the analysis of actual samples, the recovery of standard addition is higher than 95%. BMS-986158 In sum, the combination of hydrosulphonyl functional COFs with graphene looks very promising for the assembly of sensors with high sensitivity toward the determination of heavy metal ions for coastal environmental monitoring.
During antipodal cells PCD, polytene chromosomes rearrangement, segregation of nucleoli components and extrusion of nuclear components occur, cytochrome c is released from the mitochondria and DNA breaks appear. We studied in detail the nuclei of cells of the antipodal complex of wheat embryo sac (Triticum aestivum L.) during programmed cell death (PCD). The antipodal complex has been reported to be formed before double fertilisation of the embryo sac. Polyploidisation leads to the formation of giant polytene chromosomes in the nuclei of antipodal cells. These chromosomes are involved in secretory functions and are important for the development of cellular endosperm. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling assay and immunodetection revealed DNA breaks in the nuclei and release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytoplasm of antipodal cells during PCD. We used transmission electron microscopy, immunodetection and histochemistry to analyse the characteristic structural changes in nuclei of antipodal cells. We used transmission electron microscopy, immunodetection and histochemistry to analyse the characteristic structural changes in the nuclei of antipodal cells during PCD. These included sequential structural changes in the nuclei containing polytene chromosomes, segregation of some components of the nucleolus into the bodies of polytene chromosomes, extrusion of nucleolar components and parts of chromosomes into the cytoplasm of antipodal cells and then into the endosperm coenocyte. The obtained results expand the understanding of the structural changes of plant cells with giant polytene chromosomes during PCD.
The absence of nigrosome 1 on brain MRI and the hyperechogenicity of substantia nigra (SNh) by transcranial sonography are two useful biomarkers in the diagnosis of parkinsonisms. We aimed to evaluate the absence of nigrosome 1 in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to address its meaning.
136 ALS patients were recruited, including 16 progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) and 22 primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) patients. The SNh area was measured planimetrically by standard protocols. The nigrosome 1 status was qualitatively assessed by two blind evaluators in susceptibility weight images of 3T MRI. Demographic and clinical data were collected and the C9ORF72 expansion was tested in all patients.
Nigrosome 1 was absent in 30% of ALS patients (36% of PLS, 29% of classical ALS and 19% of PMA patients). There was no relationship between radiological and clinical laterality, nor between nigrosome 1 and SNh area. Male sex (OR = 3.63 [1.51, 9.38], p = 0.005) and a higher upper motor neuron (UMN) score (OR = 1.10 [1.02, 1.2], p = 0.022) were independently associated to nigrosome 1 absence, which also was an independent marker of poor survival (HR = 1.79 [1.3, 2.8], p = 0.013).
In ALS patients, the absence of nigrosome 1 is associated with male sex, UMN impairment and shorter survival. This suggests that constitutional factors and the degree of pyramidal involvement are related to the substantia nigra involvement in ALS. Thus, nigrosome 1 could be a marker of a multisystem degeneration, which in turn associates to poor prognosis.
