3 Wheeler Buggies
A tri-wheeled stroller is ideal for off-road terrain and offers a smooth ride for baby. They are also easier to push and maneuver than a four-wheel buggy, especially those with fabric sling seats or seats that are set comfortably within the frame, providing the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.
Stability
Three-wheeled buggys are very stable, and this makes them a great choice for off-road walking (especially when they are equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They often feature oversized front wheels that can deal well with bumps and kerbs as well as rough ground. Some even feature a lockable front tire for extra stability on uneven terrain.
It's important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies have a lower centre of gravity than 4-wheeled models which means that they can tip over more easily. However, the most reliable 3-wheel pushchairs have an ideal geometry and design to ensure they are solid in all conditions. They should be able of turning on a dime and be able to steer with just one hand, and have 360o swivelling front wheels which makes them perfect for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.
Find models with pneumatic tyres. These are designed to handle nonpaved tracks, and should be able to take on mud, gravel, rocks, etc. A lot of all-terrain buggies have a swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked to provide greater stability when dealing with rough terrain.
A 3-wheel pram is also an ideal option for runners or for those who like to walk quickly and uphill, particularly if you're planning to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. 3 wheeled pushchair is a great example, with a world-facing seat that can recline flat and features a more comfortable 5-point harness and storage space for all your equipment (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable from birth and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It can also handle a bit of light jogging, but isn't designed for serious runners.
Weight
If you're seeking a buggy that will take on tricky terrain, then you'll need one with big wheels. They are designed to tackle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks with ease, while still providing smooth riding. They are also ideal for jogging as they come with built-in suspension and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. The downside is that they are quite heavy to push.
The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy to use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheel buggy is very mobile due to its 16 rear wheels and a lockable front wheel. It comes with tyres filled with air that require pumping regularly. It can be used by children until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat, and she found steering it easy even with her 3-year-old on board.
Another great option is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, which has an adjustable handlebar and a high-quality hood with 50+ UV protection. It is also easy to move up and down kerbs and fits in a small car boot. It can also be used as a pram with a carrycot or infant car seat for newborns and toddlers.
Sling seats made of fabric fit snugly inside the frame of the buggie instead of over it like modular seats. This model has a lower centre-of-gravity, which is the right height. It is much easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you don't know how many times you'll need to do this as a new parent!).
Seating
The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is quite impressive and there are many different choices to choose from. The carrycot included is ideal for a newborn (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lie-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy). Older infants and toddlers will enjoy the spacious and padded seat unit with adjustable ventilation. It is important to note that the seats do not recline completely however, they can be adjusted to the lowest level which should still give your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.
pushchair 3 wheels sling seat is also available. It has the advantage of being positioned snugly inside the frame instead of on top like an open-back seat. This gives a lower centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier and lighter to push, particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this kind of seat dealt with these obstacles.
This type of buggy has an extensive basket and other features that are useful, such as an extendable hood with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal, and some innovative visibility lights which can be put in front of occupants for improved safety on difficult terrain.
If you're looking for a buggy that will grow with your family The sport(tm) is a world first, can accommodate infants and be modified to accommodate three or four children as they grow. All within a single footprint.
Storage
The 3-wheeled frame is much more stable and can be pushed with just one hand. It's also ideal for terrain that is difficult. The shopping basket is smaller than a 4-wheeler.
A high-quality ATP will feature pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for better comfort, and an excellent suspension. It will accommodate a car seat, which means you can use it from the time of birth.
MFM's reviewers have noticed that the 3-wheeler frame can't fit through all the doors in their homes or small car boot - be sure to check the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded before purchasing in case you're concerned about space.
Find a 3-wheeler that has 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the best choice for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is among the most popular and can be used as a single unit from day dot and later converts into twin buggies once your baby begins walking.
Tyres
Air filled tyres are made to provide your child with more comfort while riding by cushioning bumps and uneven surfaces. They are commonly found on pushchairs such as the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an amazing ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tires of the Phil & Ted's Sport made it simple for her to navigate the kerbs as well as other obstacles.
These tyres can be difficult to maintain and need to have their air pressure maintained regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, and you should always carry a repair kit and spare inner tube when you're out and about.
PU tyres can be seen on more pushchairs than the air-filled tyres, but they're still as sturdy. You can identify PU tires by their smooth appearance and soft feel. They also slide across flat and tidy surfaces.
It's usually possible to discern the difference between air-filled and PU tyres by running your hand over them, if it feels firm, then it's rubber and If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also verify whether your buggy has PU tyres by sliding the tyres onto a clean, flat surface They'll roll easily and fit snugly in their wheel hubs.
Foam tyres can withstand the rough terrain that comes with high-performance buggies. The drawback is that the foam may compress and make your buggy feel less stable, as it loses its springy feel. Additionally, these tyres may often be noisy as they make a lot of noise as you turn and navigate your way through the town.
