The study of intestinal microbiota in vector insects like triatomines is paramount in parasitology because many parasitic species inhabit the vector's gut. Although knowledge on the gut microbiota in various vectors of the parasitic flagellate Trypanosoma cruzi has grown, research efforts have focused on South American triatomines. This study reports the isolation of bacterial microbiota in the anterior and posterior gut of Meccus pallidipennis (a triatomine species endemic to Mexico) by culture, as well as its identification by phenotypic and biochemical tests and its quantification by counting colony-forming units. The study was performed on fifth-instar nymph and adult specimens of M. pallidipennis, either laboratory-bred or collected in the field and either infected or not with T. cruzi. Overall, 17 bacterial species were identified, with the genera Bacillus and Staphylococcus being the most prevalent regardless of the origin of the insects. No differences were observed in the number of bacterial species in the gut of laboratory-bred and field-collected insects, neither with respect to life stage or infection status. In general, the Shannon-Weaver diversity index was higher in non-infected insects than in infected ones. Further studies using non-culture methods are required to determine whether bacterial species diversity is modified by laboratory breeding.Moriche palm is consumed as both a fresh fruit and processed food in Peru and Brazil. Although its fruit contains phytoestrogens, the active compounds have not yet been identified. Therefore, we purified moriche palm extract (MPE) and identified compounds exhibiting estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities. Estrogenic activity was assessed by the estrogen-dependent growth of MCF-7 cells and increases in uterine weights in mice. Antiandrogenic activity was evaluated by 5α-reductase inhibitory activity and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) expression in LNCaP cells. In vivo antiestrogenic activity was also assessed based on testosterone-induced prostate growth in castrated mice. Four methoxyflavans were isolated from MPE and all, except for 7,4'-dihydroxy-5-methoxyflavan, promoted MCF-7 cell growth, indicating estrogenic activity. Uterine and ovary weights increased in mice orally administered MPE (400 mg/kg) for 2 weeks. Regarding antiandrogenic activity, among the four methoxyflavans isolated, 6,7,4'-trihydroxy-5-methoxyflavan (1 µg/ml) suppressed the mRNA and protein expression of PSA in LNCaP cells. Furthermore, prostate growth was suppressed in mice orally administered MPE (200 mg/kg) for 2 weeks. All methoxyflavans inhibited 5α-reductase activity with IC50 less than 10 µg/ml. Collectively, the present results demonstrated that orally administered MPE exhibited estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities. Methoxyflavans, particularly 6,7,4'-trihydroxy-5-methoxyflavan, appear to be the active compounds for these activities. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The fruit of Mauritia flexuosa (moriche palm) has been used for beverages and processed foods. Although it is said to contain phytoestrogens, the active compounds have not yet been identified. In this study, we isolated and identified methoxyflavans exhibiting estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities. Among them, 6,7,4'-trihydroxy-5-methoxyflavan appeared to be the most effective compounds for these activities. The multi-target activity of curcumin makes it a promising pharmacological lead for structural modifications focused on the preparation of new better therapeutics with improved bioavailability. A possible modification is to "decompose" the parent curcumin structure into constituent units and to build up curcumin analogues with biphenyl structural moiety. The antioxidant properties of the so-called "monomers" (m1-m3) and "dimers" (d1-d3) are studied experimentally and computationally. Their protective effects as chain-breaking antioxidants are investigated for the individual compounds and in binary/ternary compositions with α-tocopherol (TOH) and ascorbyl palmitate (AscPH). All monomers manifest significant synergism up to 70% in mixtures with TOH. Synergistic effects are found for the ternary compositions of monomeric analogues upon addition to the binary mixture of standard antioxidants (TOH + AscPH). Dimers with biphenyl skeleton manifest a lower potential in compositions under lipid oxidation conditions. Das a food supplement, beverage supplement, or as a pharmaceutical composition. The present pilot study focuses on the adaptive processes of babies who are placed during their first months of life. It used an ethological approach to explore the behavioural adjustment of 19 infants from their arrival in placement through their first 6 weeks in Residential Care (RC; France), a Foster Family (FF; Québec) or an Infant-Mother Centre (IMC; Québec). Direct observations were conducted once a week during feeding sessions. Observed behaviours were as follows sleep-wake state, self-soothing, burp, visual exploration, motor activity, facial and vocal expressions. Then, a Kruskal-Wallis test was conducted to examine differences in babies' adaption as a function of placement setting. Results showed that, in RC, the duration of the post-feeding phase is the shortest. Moreover, these institutionalized babies showed the most modes of self-protection and the fewest vocalizations. By contrast, babies placed in the IMC spent the least time in withdrawal, expressed motor activity more regularly and were never placed back in their recliner before burping. Larger differences appear comparing placement in RC and that in the IMC, the placement in FF showing intermediate results.
To evaluate the safety and accuracy of a unilateral three-dimensionally printed animal-specific drill guide (3DASDG) design for unilateral stabilization in the thoracolumbar vertebral column of dogs compared to a bilateral design.
Cadaveric study.
Fifty-two corridors in one canine cadaver.
Two 3DASDG designs with 2 drilling tubes each were created from T8 to L7 vertebrae. Fifty-two corridors were drilled on the right and the left sides by using unilateral and bilateral designs, respectively. Planned and postoperative trajectories (entry point, exit point, angle) were compared to establish the accuracy. Statistical analysis was used for accuracy comparison between designs. Safety was evaluated by using Zdichavsky classification.
Unilateral and bilateral drill guide designs were not different for entry point and angle deviations; however, they were different for the exit point deviations. Two corridors breached outside the vertebra. For all guides, mean entry and exit point deviations were less than 1 and 2 mm, respectively. The maximum entry or exit point deviation in both groups was 4.7 mm. The mean angle deviation was <3.5°, and the maximum angle deviation was 9.3°.
No difference was detected in accuracy of entry points and angle deviations between drill guide designs tested in normal vertebrae. The technique was classified as highly safe.
A unilateral drill guide design may be a safe alternative to bilateral guides for unilateral stabilization of the thoracolumbar vertebral column in dogs.

To report the clinical presentation, management and outcomes of young patients with prolactinomas (<20years) and conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Clinical, biochemical and radiological data (1996-2018) were collected from our centre. A systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature (1994-2019) on prolactinoma (age <20years) were conducted. Both random and fixed effects meta-analysis were used to pool outcomes across studies. RESULTS 1 CASE SERIES Twenty-two patients (14 females) were identified; median age at diagnosis 15.7years (range 13-19); 12 patients (6 females) had a macroprolactinoma. Seven patients (macroprolactinoma-6) had associated pituitary hormone deficiencies at presentation. selleck products Five patients (4 males) underwent surgical resection due to poor response to cabergoline or apoplexy. Patients undergoing surgery had larger tumours (p<.02) and higher serum prolactin concentration (p<.005). All patients with macroprolactinoma >20mm required surgical interventioal intervention. While overall prolactinomas in less then 20 years age group are more common in females, the proportion of macroprolactinoma vs microprolactinoma is greater in males, particularly for large invasive tumours. Microprolactinoma is a rare diagnosis in adolescent males. The surgical treatment of external coxa saltans is not standardized. link2 Many techniques for iliotibial release have been described, both open and arthroscopic. No technique describes ultrasound release. In this cadaveric study, we describe a minimally invasive technique for percutaneous iliotibial release with ultrasound guidance, designed to be performed under local anesthesia. The future objective would be to perform an active intraoperative test of the snapping hip to confirm adequate release, thus reducing the risk of recurrence.
To evaluate the length and diameter of a left external jugular vein graft as a substitute for the left subclavian artery in the modified Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt (mBTTS) in differently sized dogs.
Cadaveric study.
Dog cadavers of three weight categories (10/group) <9.5 kg, 9.5 to 27 kg, and > 27 kg.
The length and infused external diameters of harvested vessels were measured with vernier calipers and recorded. A matched-pairs t test was used to test the difference in vessel lengths. The agreement in vessel diameters was assessed by using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). Pearson's correlation coefficients (CC) were determined for vessel diameter to weight category and vessel length to weight category.
The external jugular vein measured longer than the subclavian artery in all dogs (52.0 ± 20.8 mm and 23.0 ± 8.9 mm, respectively), with a mean difference of 28 ± 14.3 mm (P < .001). The mean external infused subclavian and external jugular diameters measured 7.8 ± 2.2 mm and 8.0 ± 2.5 mm, respectively (P = .32). Lin's CCC was 0.87. Pearson's CC were 0.74 in both vessel diameters (P < .001); they were 0.36 and 0.43, respectively, for subclavian artery and external juglar vein length (P < .001).
Autologous external jugular vein grafts had an external diameter similar to subclavian artery and a significantly longer length in variably sized dogs.
External jugular vein grafts may be an acceptable graft choice for mBTTS.
External jugular vein grafts may be an acceptable graft choice for mBTTS.Social support and an emerging sense of community are common in flooding, but postflood group dynamics have not been fully addressed. In the context of a flooded community, we explore how social identification with one's community emerges and affects well-being, collective efficacy, and social support. Results from a quantitative survey show that social identification was positively associated with common fate, collective efficacy, and well-being through residents' expectations of support and shared goals. Importantly, social identification and disaster exposure interacted For flooded residents, observing support was associated with providing support regardless of levels of social identification. link3 For unaffected residents there was no association between observed and provided support, regardless of levels of social identification. However, for indirectly affected residents observing support was associated to providing support but only when they highly identified with the community. We argue that structural factors should also be considered when exploring the effects of group membership.
