Prunus avium L. by-products, such as stems, leaves, and flowers, are used in folk medicine to prevent and treat some diseases. However, their phenolic composition and in vitro bioactivities against tumor cells are poorly known. In this work, we compared the phenolic profile and the biological potential of aqueous infusions and hydroethanolic extracts of P. avium leaves, stems, and flowers from Saco cultivar, collected from the Fundão region (Portugal). Among the fifty-two phenolic compounds tentatively identified by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MSn, the hydroxycinnamic acids were the most abundant. Both extracts of stems revealed a higher activity against DPPH•. Meanwhile, hydroethanolic extracts from stems and flowers and aqueous infusions of flowers were the most effective in inhibiting the growth of the human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells at concentrations above 200 μg/mL. More detailed knowledge about the phenolic composition and health-promoting properties of Portuguese P. avium by-products allows for increasing the biological and commercial value of these bio-wastes, which may have a positive impact on food and pharmaceutical industries, as on the valorization of the local economy.The global market of dried seahorses mainly supplies Traditional Chinese Medicine and still relies on blurry trade chains that often cover less sustainable practices targeting these pricey and endangered fish. As such, reliable tools that allow the enforcement of traceability, namely to confirm the geographic origin of traded seahorses, are urgently needed. The present study evaluated the use of elemental fingerprints (EF) in the bony structures of long-snouted seahorses Hippocampus guttulatus raised in captivity in two different locations (southern Portugal and Northern Spain) to discriminate their geographic origin. The EF of different body parts of H. guttulatus were also evaluated as potential proxies for the EF of the whole body, in order to allow the analysis of damaged specimens and avoid the use of whole specimens for analysis. The contrasting EF of H. guttulatus raised in the two locations allowed their reliable discrimination. Although no single body part exactly mimicked the EF of the whole body, seahorse trunks, as well as damaged specimens, could still be correctly allocated to their geographic origin. This promising forensic approach to discriminate the geographic origin of seahorses raised in captivity should now be validated for wild conspecifics originating from different locations, as well as for other species within genus Hippocampus.Based on nonadiabatic molecular dynamics that integrate electronic transitions with the time-dependent phonon spectrum, this article provides a panoramic landscape of the dynamical process during the formation of photoinduced excitons in conjugated polymers. When external optical beam/pulses with intensities of 10 µJ/cm2 and 20 µJ/cm2 are utilized to excite a conjugated polymer, it is found that the electronic transition firstly triggers local lattice vibrations, which not only locally distort alternating bonds but change the phonon spectrum as well. Within the first 60 fs, the occurrence of local distortion of alternating bonds accompanies the localization of the excited-state's electron. Up to 100 fs, both alternating bonds and the excited electronic state are well localized in the middle of the polymer chain. In the first ~200 fs, the strong lattice vibration makes a local phonon mode at 1097.7 cm-1 appear in the phonon spectrum. The change of electron states then induces the self-trapping effect to act on the following photoexcitation process of 1.2 ps. During the following relaxation of 1.0 ps, new local infrared phonon modes begin to occur. All of this, incorporated with the occurrence of local infrared phonon modes and localized electronic states at the end of the relaxation, results in completed exciton formation.Background and Objectives Prematurity is currently a serious public health issue worldwide, because of its high associated morbidity and mortality. Optimizing the management of these pregnancies is of high priority to improve perinatal outcomes. One tool frequently used to determine the degree of fetal wellbeing is cardiotocography (CTG). A review of the available literature on fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring in preterm fetuses shows that studies are scarce, and the evidence thus far is unclear. The lack of reference standards for CTG patterns in preterm fetuses can lead to misinterpretation of the changes observed in electronic fetal monitoring (EFM). The aims of this narrative review were to summarize the most relevant concepts in the field of CTG interpretation in preterm fetuses, and to provide a practical approach that can be useful in clinical practice. Materials and Methods A MEDLINE search was carried out, and the published articles thus identified were reviewed. Results Compared to term fetuses, preterm fetuses have a slightly higher baseline FHR. Heart rate is faster in more immature fetuses, and variability is lower and increases in more mature fetuses. Transitory, low-amplitude decelerations are more frequent during the second trimester. Transitory increases in FHR are less frequent and become more frequent and increase in amplitude as gestational age increases. Conclusions The main characteristics of FHR tracings changes as gestation proceeds, and it is of fundamental importance to be aware of these changes in order to correctly interpret CTG patterns in preterm fetuses.Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and mRNAs are temporally expressed during chicken follicle development. However, follicle transcriptome studies in chickens with timepoints relating to changes in luteinizing hormone (LH) levels are rare. In this study, gene expression in Rohman layers was investigated at three distinct stages of the ovulatory cycle zeitgeber time 0 (ZT0, 900 a.m.), zeitgeber time 12 (ZT12, 900 p.m.), and zeitgeber time 20 (ZT20, 500 a.m.) representing the early, middle, and LH surge stages, respectively, of the ovulatory cycle. Gene expression profiles were explored during follicle development at ZT0, ZT12, and ZT20 using Ribo-Zero RNA sequencing. The three stages were separated into two major stages, including the pre-LH surge and the LH surge stages. A total of 12,479 mRNAs and 7528 lncRNAs were identified among the three stages, and 4531, 523 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 2367, 211 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) were identified in the ZT20 vs. ZT12, and ZT12 vs. ZT0, comparisons. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that genes involved in cell proliferation and metabolism processes (lipid-related) were mainly enriched in the ZT0 and ZT12 stages, respectively, and genes related to oxidative stress, steroids regulation, and inflammatory process were enriched in the ZT20 stage. These findings provide the basis for further investigation of the specific genetic and molecular functions of follicle development in chickens.Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic disease that can affect the physical and mental health of children and adolescents, often leading to anxiety disorders with chronic activation of the hypothalamic axis (HPA). Moreover, a great proportion of adolescents with T1DM also demonstrate anorexia nervosa (AN), due to the increased preoccupation with food and the need to have an acceptable body image. Herein is described the first case study of an adolescent patient diagnosed with T1DM, anxiety disorder (AD), and AN. A 14-year-old girl with T1DM since the age of 12 years presented weight loss at age 13 years and 3 months and low body mass index (BMI), which did not improve despite dietary recommendations and adequate disease control. Additionally, she presented menstrual disorders at the age of 12 years and 11 months (menstrual age 12 years and 1 month). A psychological evaluation of the teenager was conducted using a semi-structured interview that assessed perceived stress, health status, quality of life, and depression. AD and AN were diagnosed and the patient initiated an intervention focusing on psychological health and nutrition and which incorporated physiotherapeutic relaxation sessions and breathing exercises. After 3 months of treatment, the patient's BMI was increased, and a normal menstrual cycle was apparent. These results have since remained consistent. Stress leads to the appearance of AN and menstrual disorders. Therefore, physiotherapeutic programs could reduce stress and effectively ameliorate AN and AD.
Sleep quality in relation to anatomic site among colorectal cancer (CRC) patients is not well understood, though discerning the relationship could contribute to improved survivorship care.
We ascertained sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) and other personal characteristics within an ongoing population-based study of CRC patients identified through a cancer registry (
= 1453). Differences in sleep quality by CRC site were analyzed using chi-square and ANOVA tests. We used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association of tumor site with sleep quality concerns, adjusting for patient attributes and time since diagnosis.
Sleeping problems were reported by 70% of CRC patients. ubiquitin-Proteasome degradation Overall, participants with rectal (vs. colon) cancer were more likely (OR (95% CI)) to report general trouble sleeping (1.58 (1.19, 2.10)). Rectal cancer patients were also more likely than colon cancer patients to report changes in sleep patterns after cancer diagnosis (1.38 (1.05, 1.80)), and trouble sleeping specifically due to getting up to use the bathroom (1.53 (1.20, 1.96)) or pain (1.58 (1.15, 2.17)), but were less likely to report trouble sleeping specifically due to issues with breathing/coughing/snoring (0.51 (0.27, 0.99)).
Overall, rectal cancer patients were more likely to have sleep complications compared to colon cancer patients. This suggests sleep-focused survivorship care may be adapted according to CRC site to ensure patients receive appropriate support.

The main problems are related to the impossibility of implanting an expandable prosthesis to the residual bone growth that is much too big in relation to the bone size, with the precocious implant loosening and/or the residual absence of bone growth, as well as the problem of limb length and shape difference. In this paper, we report a possible reconstruction solution using a composite prosthesis for an Ewing's sarcoma of the proximal femur in an infant patient. After resection, a femoral stem was cemented into the distal third of a homoplastic humerus; a carbon fiber plate was used to stabilize the bone/homograft interface. At the one-year follow-up, the patient was free of disease and able to walk with only a slight limp. This case report describes a possible solution for very small patients. An adult humerus is of the right size to replace a child's lower limb segments, and the distal humerus can be shaped, maintaining a cortex stiff enough to support a prosthesis.
