3 Wheel Buggies
3 wheel buggies offer superb maneuverability, and are a stylish, slim frame. A lot of them come with a fabric sling seat with a cosy lying flat bed and excellent weight distribution that is ideal from the moment of birth.
The wheels are larger and typically have suspension to allow for smooth, agile mobility on various terrains. The only downside is that they can be more heavy and bulkier to store and transport.
Stability
Three wheel buggies are remarkably solid - they don't fall over as easily as pushchairs with four wheels when traveling in a straight line. Also, 3 wheeler pushchairs 'll be able to move them more quickly and easily. If you attempt to stop or turn suddenly, they'll lose stability and may tip over. Some manufacturers add an additional wheel to their 3-wheel buggy designs to improve the stability of the chassis.
You can also conquer off-road terrain with the extra wheel. Look out for models with air-filled tyres (also known as pneumatic tyres) as these can cope with off-road routes as well as other surfaces such as rocks, sand and mud. These models will also have wheels that lock in the front to improve the stability of the vehicle over rough terrain.
With 3 wheeled pushchairs , engineering and weight distribution these buggies can turn on a dime and are easy to steer with one hand; have 360o front swivel wheels that allow agility and mobility to be easy and light to handle. They also pass the same stability standards worldwide and test as 4-wheel buggies.
If you are in the market for a fabric seat they are typically less upright in comparison to modular seats. This means that your baby's center of gravity will be closer to the ground, instantly ensuring the smoothest ride.
Most well-known for its car seats, Maxi-Cosi has recently added an ultra-light travel system and pushchair to its product line with the striking Citylife. The 3-in-1 model was designed for urban living and is compatible from birth with a newborn car seat or carrycot for infants. It has four wheels and uses an exclusive pewter black aluminium frame, which the brand claims is 'light and compact'. It's only 2cm wider than the Babyzen Yoyo.
Folding
There's a good choice of 3 wheel buggies that fold down to fit into smaller space. A lot of these buggies can be folded in one hand and are easy-to-clean. The smallest models will have an easy handlebar height adjustment, while others may have an adjustable suspension and an expandable 50+ UV canopy. Some models could have an enormous basket as well as a brake lever that is quick-release.
The most efficient 3 wheeler for rough terrain
A 3-wheeled buggy is usually better equipped to deal with off-road conditions as in comparison to a model with four wheels but both can be a bit stuck on tight corners. However, selecting a model with larger wheels on both sides can help. This allows you to push them over rough terrain and will help you get up and down high curbs.
The brand new Roma Atlas has been praised by many for its surprising ability to move despite its three-wheeled design. MFM reviewer Kath tested it with her child and said that "it did really well on cobbles, bumpy surfaces, gravel tracks, dirt roads, and a few hills."
Stella Stella, the all-terrain 3-wheel buggy from Maxi-Cosi, is another option. It is suitable from birth when used with a carrycot. It's a bit bigger than the lighter 4-wheelers but it features air-filled tires with three recline positions and an easy fold with one hand.
Its most appealing feature is its modularity. It's compatible with all the brands' baby strollers and car seats. This means you can build your ideal travel system for day-to-day or longer walks using the chassis as a base.
Tyres
The tyres on 3 wheel buggies come in a variety of designs and materials, and each comes with its pros and cons. Air-filled tyres, for example, offer a smooth ride and great maneuverability while foam-filled tires are more durable. The type you choose will depend on your lifestyle and where you live.
For instance, if you intend to frequently travel on rough or muddy terrain, you may think about an all-wheeler with more durable tires. Take into consideration the type of suspension you require. Strong suspension is useful to handle bumps and humps, but it can be heavy and contribute to the overall weight of your pushchair.
Another important factor to consider is tyre size. Knowing how to understand tyre sizing is vital to ensure safety, performance, and durability. The combination of numbers and letters on the sidewalls of tyres may be confusing initially, but decoding it will allow you to comprehend the dimensions of the tyre. A tyre having the size 185/70 R14, for example is a radial tire in 185/70 and has 14-inch rim size.
PU tires are lighter and more puncture-resistant than rubber tires. If you're unsure whether the tires on a pushchair are made of rubber or PU, slide the tires across the surface with a smooth surface. If the tires slide easily and smoothly, they're made of PU. If not, they are made of rubber.
Suspension
The suspension on a 3 wheel buggy is a vital aspect to consider as it will absorb the smacks and bumps of rough terrain, making it much more comfortable for your child. Having large wheels, that are ideally air-filled and can be locked to ensure stability while jogging is also important as this will ensure your buggy is capable of maneuvering off road surfaces with ease.
There are many options for buggy styles that will suit any budget and lifestyle. The Mountain Buggy, for example, pioneered all-terrain agility in a three-wheel buggies. With an engineering and geometry that is perfect their fabric sling seat sits snug inside the frame as opposed to being on top of modular seats, resulting in a lower centre of gravity and sitting at the right height for the best weight distribution that allows it to easily handle the kerb pops.
The Urban Glide 2 by Thule is a great alternative. It has an elegant design, a big wheel that's easy to maneuver and comes with a superb suspension. It also comes with the twist handbrake to facilitate ease of use. MFM reviewer Kath took this buggy to the test by taking it on a hike through rough terrain and found that it handled the terrain really well saying that it 'navigates easily over grass, bumpy pavements, cobbles, dirt tracks and even makes a light work of going up and down kerbs'.
The Roma Atlas is another popular off road option and similar to the Urban Glide 2, comes in a variety of colors to match your style. It also comes with a movable handlebar and a spacious basket. You can also pick from a selection of infant car seats that transform the buggy into a pram, such as the elegantly designed carrycot plus(tm) which is a comfy lie-flat bed for newborns and babies from 12 months to 12 years old.
Safety
Having four wheels makes the buggy more stable and less likely to tip over and easier to handle. It also makes it more secure for your child as their weight is distributed more evenly throughout the frame of the pushchair.
A four-wheeled buggy has a lower center of gravity, which makes it easier to pop over curbs and climb up. The sling seat is affixed within the frame, not on top of it like modular seats do, which creates a low seating position and a lighter buggy that can be easily manoeuvred.
However, if you want to go for an exercise with your child then a 4-wheeler may be better suited since it will have a suspension system that allows the front wheel to move independently of the back wheel to allow you to tackle bumpy roads and rough terrain Be aware that not all buggies with 4 wheels are suitable for running (most are NOT like the Phil and Teds). Mountain Buggies are the exception because they come with a suspension system specifically designed for them that's been independently tested across all kinds of terrain.
