3 Wheeled Pushchairs
3 wheeled pushchairs are excellent choice for mothers who enjoy walking on diverse terrain. They are easy to maneuver and more sturdy on rough terrain since they have larger front wheels.
If you intend to use your buggy on terrains other than paved tracks, choose one with air-filled tires (also known as pneumatic). They are much more effective on non-paved surfaces, and are puncture-proof too.
Stability
The bigger the wheels of your pushchair are the better they are able to handle rough terrain and ground. This is because larger wheels have a greater contact surface, and are therefore less likely to slide over dips and bumps. They also offer a more comfortable ride for your child. The downside is that additional wheels can take up space in your car's boot, and certain models of pushchair with large front wheels may require to be removed in order to keep it in a flat place.
All-terrain pushchairs are designed to be able to take on anything from high street strolls to woodland walks, and are fitted with features that let them achieve this, like robust suspension and tyres with puncture-proof treads that are large. These models are generally more expensive however if your pushchair is utilized off the beaten track regularly, they may be worth the cost.
If you plan to remove your pushchair from roads, it's worth opting for a pushchair that is fitted with air-filled tyres (sometimes called pneumatic tyres) because they are more suitable for rough ground than the solid rubber ones. These tyres are also less likely to puncture than those made of metal or hard plastic.
Some pushchairs let you to turn off the front wheel when not in use, making them more compact to store - ideal in the event that you have a small car boot. Certain models also come with an swivelling front wheel that can be locked to add stability over very rough ground. If you're thinking of purchasing a pushchair that has this feature, make sure to check how it's operated before purchasing.
If you're thinking about adding a second seat, parent-facing unit or car seat adaptors to your pushchair, it's important to check how it's going to be easy to change these elements and fold/unfold the pushchair when you have the attached items, particularly as you may need to carry a baby on board. Some models are designed for rapid and simple modifications to the configuration, whereas others require more patience.
Manoeuvrability
A 3-wheel pushchair is often more maneuverable and manage than a four-wheeler, with the single wheel in front making it easy to maneuver over rough terrain or bumps. Many models also have suspension systems that are designed to help absorb shocks and ensure an easy ride for your child. MFM's Kath tested a three-wheeled buggie and was impressed by how well it handled uneven pavements, cobblestones and dirt tracks. She found it easy to climb over and down kerbs and the wheels were fast to negotiate grass.
There are three main types of 3 wheel pushchairs that include joggers, strollers, and all-terrain models. Strollers have smaller wheels and narrower frames that are better designed for urban environments, while Joggers have large wheels and are designed for use off-road. They come with a handbrake, adjustable handlebars and are great for off-road strolls.
All-terrain pushchairs are a favorite for parents who want to utilise the outdoors and explore the countryside. They generally have more robust and larger wheels than regular pushchairs. They are great for rocky terrain and are suitable from the time of birth. However, you might need car seat adaptors to attach an infant carrier.
Some pushchairs appear to be 3-wheelers, but have four wheels. Two wheels are placed close together in front instead of the traditional central pair. This allows for the manoeuvrability of a three-wheeler, but the stability and safety of a four-wheeler.
Some 3-wheel pushchairs feature a swivelling and lockable front wheel, which makes them even more maneuverable. This is particularly useful for those who frequently encounter challenging surfaces, since it can help you avoid getting stuck or having to walk around obstacles. Some all-terrain strollers are fitted with foam-filled "never flat" tyres, which do not require pumping. This makes them more comfortable and comfortable to use for long walks or for frequent use. It's important to note that these types of pushchairs tend to be heavier and bigger than other pushchairs which is why it's essential to consider how you'll be transporting them or storing them when deciding on your preferred model.
Weight
Generally speaking, 3-wheel pushchairs tend to be heavier and larger than standard pushchairs. This is especially true when they are equipped with large rear wheels. It can be a challenge to lift a pushchair while it is folded, such as when loading into the trunk of a car or when climbing stairs. This may also make the pushchair feel a little weighty when you're out and about, and could hinder your ability to manoeuvre through small spaces or aisles in shops.
All-terrain strollers are designed to be used on different terrains like rough and uneven ground such as mud, gravel, and paths. These pushchairs come with large, puncture-proof tires as well as strong suspensions to ensure a comfortable ride for your child. These pushchairs are generally expensive when compared with regular pushchairs.
If you reside in the countryside, or take your child regularly to walks in the woods or country parks, an all-terrain pushchair may be the best option. These pushchairs are designed to handle different terrains and will have large tyres on both the front and rear. They are usually the best option for wet and muddy weather as well, although we recommend inspecting the tyres frequently to avoid flat spots and air bubbles.
The iCandy Core, for example, is an all-terrain pushchair that checks a lot of boxes. It has a spacious basket that can hold up to 10kg, a one hand fold and adjustable handlebars. Its large tyres are foam-filled and never flat, so you won't have to be concerned about punctures or losing air pressure. The seat is designed to be world-facing and suitable for babies from birth, and can be used in conjunction with a carrycot or a compatible infant carrier.
Another alternative is the Special Tomato Jogger, which has a lightweight design and excellent manoeuvrability. It's perfect for parents who love taking walks or jogging and comes with suspension that will give you the user a comfortable ride across all terrains. The fabric can be removed from the frame and then washed with cold water by machine.
Tyres
A 3-wheel pushchair's tyres are usually larger than those on the 4-wheel model and can help deal with off-road terrain. The UPPAbaby Ridge, for example has tyres with large, foam-filled tyres that will never flatten and suspension systems. This makes it ideal for long walks over rough terrain. It's also designed to be suitable for jogging when your baby is old enough due to a 360-degree pivoting lockable front wheel and a suspension that can be adjusted.
You should consider the weight of your pushchair before deciding on the model. It is also important to decide if you'd like wheels that can be removed to make it more easily stored in your car boot. MFM reviewer Becky particularly liked this feature as it made maneuvering around the corners of supermarkets much easier.
