The aim of the study was to find evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in UK cats.

Tissue samples were tested for SARS-CoV-2 antigen using immunofluorescence and for viral RNA by in situ hybridisation. A set of 387 oropharyngeal swabs that had been submitted for routine respiratory pathogen testing was tested for SARS-CoV-2 RNA using reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR.

Lung tissue collected post-mortem from cat 1 tested positive for both SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antigen and RNA. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in an oropharyngeal swab collected from cat 2 that presented with rhinitis and conjunctivitis. High throughput sequencing of the viral genome revealed five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) compared to the nearest UK human SARS-CoV-2 sequence, and this human virus contained eight SNPs compared to the original Wuhan-Hu-1 reference sequence. P7C3 An analysis of the viral genome of cat 2 together with nine other feline-derived SARS-CoV-2 sequences from around the world revealed no shared cat-specific mutations.

These findings indicate that human-to-cat transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK, with the infected cats developing mild or severe respiratory disease. Given the ability of the new coronavirus to infect different species, it will be important to monitor for human-to-cat, cat-to-cat and cat-to-human transmission.

Among 449 cellulitis cases, about 15% developed abscess, and about 70% of teenaged patients were abscess cases. Furthermore, abscess in the younger age group occurred almost exclusively among male patients. The lesion was predominantly concentric at all ages in the abscess group and in teenagers in the non-abscess group. In contrast, it was diffuse in patients ≥20 years old in the non-abscess group. The clinical symptoms and laboratory values in the abscess group were generally more severe than those in the non-abscess group, especially in the older age group. The abscess sizes increased with the initial area of the lesions. Most abscess cases received incision, and post-incision ulcers were mostly conservatively treated. The duration required for treatment termination was >30 days longer in the abscess group than in the non-abscess group. When post-incision ulcers were conservatively treated, the duration until healing increased with abscess size. However, the durations did not significantly differ between the conservatively and surgically treated groups. When surgically treated, many ulcers healed within 19 days after operation and the outpatient follow-up period tended to be relatively short. Most teenaged patients were student athletes, and thus needed an early return to competition. The main cause in these patients was bruising during sports, with rugby football the most common causative sport. Ulcer closure by operation was suggested to be preferable for shortening the outpatient follow-up period, especially for student athlete patients.
People living with HIV (PLWH) have a high burden of comorbidities and concomitant medication use. The aim of this study was to analyse the prevalence, predictors and patterns of polypharmacy (PP) in a large therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) registry.

We searched our TDM registry and categorized co-medications into 26 drug classes. We included patients with at least one medication recorded PP and severe polypharmacy (sPP) were defined as the concomitant use of ≥5 or ≥10 nonantiretroviral/nonantitubercular drugs. Multivariable binary logistic analysis were conducted for identifying PP/sPP predictors. A hierarchical average-linkage cluster analysis was performed among drug classes.

We included 2432 participants (1158 PLWH) aged 49.6 years (± 14.4) in the 2016-2020 period. A higher number of concomitant medications (4 vs 3.1, P < .001) and a higher prevalence of PP (26.1% vs 21.8%, P = .015) were recorded in controls. At multivariable binary logistic analysis older age, female gender and HIV-positive serostatus (P = .015) were independent predictors of PP; older age and year of inclusion were independent predictors of sPP. Cluster analysis showed that patients receiving oral drug for type 2 diabetes have a high probability of receiving several other drugs; a cluster of co-medications was observed with opioids, diuretics and central nervous system-affecting drugs.

By 6 months of age, the child had intractable pruritus, scaling, dry skin, and generalized eczematous lesions resistant to conventional therapies for atopic dermatitis. Clinical improvement was observed following the third infusion of infliximab, and by 12 months of age, the skin lesions completely resolved. Infliximab is a promising option for the management of skin inflammation in Netherton syndrome, even in infants.Drawing on Coleman's concept of social capital, researchers have investigated how the quality of neighborhood social networks influences child development and well-being. The role of non-kin older neighbors in advancing child well-being through the enhancement of social capital, however, has been under-studied. Our objective was to delineate specific pathways through which non-kin older neighbors contribute to neighborhood quality for children and families and potentially advance child well-being. We examined open-ended interview data from 400 parents who cared for at least one child under 18 years of age and resided in 20 neighborhoods in Cleveland, Ohio. A subsample of 113 parents connected older neighbors to neighborhood quality for families and children in their narratives. Our analysis identified three primary pathways through which parents positively linked older neighbors to neighborhood quality older neighbors support parents and children, promote neighborhood safety, and contribute to neighborhood residential stability. These contributions are evidence of intergenerational closure, reciprocated exchange, and informal social control working together to create social capital in neighborhoods for children. It is by enhancing social capital that older neighbors potentially improve child well-being. We discuss the implications of our findings for neighborhood research and practice.The objective of our study was to compare the chemical composition of Cordyceps sinensis (C. sinensis) and Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris) cultivated with tussah pupa by using metabonomics technology in order to clarify the similarity and difference of the two medicinal materials from the whole metabolite level. The results showed that there were 25 different metabolites among the 69 metabolites that were highly expressed in C. militaris cultivated with tussah pupa compared with C. sinensis in both positive and negative ion modes. Analysis results of partial differential metabolites pathways indicated that 16 differential metabolites were involved in multiple pathways, such as histidine metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, tyrosine metabolism, glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, pyruvate metabolism, etc. Therefore, the composition of C. militaris cultivated with tussah pupa had significant advantage comparing with C. sinensis, which demonstrated that high-priced C. sinensis could be substituted with C. militaris cultivated with tussah pupa to some extent. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS This study comprehensively compared the chemical composition of Cordyceps sinensis (C. sinensis) and Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris) cultivated with tussah pupa by using metabonomics technology in order to clarify the similarity and difference of the two medicinal materials from the whole metabolite level. The experimental results provide a theoretical basis and scientific support for whether C. sinensis can be substituted with C. militaris cultivated with tussah pupa in clinical practice.Community based participatory research (CBPR) emphasizes democratic knowledge production and joint action between academics and communities to promote health equity through multilevel interventions. While much scholarship has expressed a commitment to collaboration between researchers and communities, effective methods of structural governance between community and academic stakeholders is under explored. We fill this gap by presenting a conceptual and empirical analysis describing multiple dimensions of structural governance in CBPR partnerships. First, we integrate public policy evidence on effective collaborative governance designs with the emerging literature in CBPR to create a conceptual model. Next, we utilize internet surveys of 179 federally funded community engaged research projects to construct and assess a measure of structural governance across multiple dimensions using confirmatory factor analysis. We explore whether antecedent factors such as the stage of the partnership and ethnic composition are associated with these dimensions and we examine associations for each of these components on positive perceptions of community involvement of research and collective empowerment. We develop a robust multidimensional measure of structural governance that is positively associated with perceptions of increased community involvement in research and collective empowerment.Owing to an undergraduate demographic transition in STEM, Latinx students are likely to work with faculty from different backgrounds when participating in undergraduate research experiences (UREs). However, the effects of mentor-mentee demographic discordance on student STEM development are unclear. This paper examines how mentoring discordance affects Latinx students' intentions to pursue graduate school and research productivity. We collected data from participants in a multiyear, multi-institutional URE program (n = 171 dyads), which we analyzed using multivariable generalized estimating equations. Results indicate that compared with gender concordance, gender discordance was associated with a 17% increase in intent to pursue graduate school for Latina students. Compared with racial/ethnic concordance, racial/ethnic discordance was associated with a 38% increase in intent to pursue graduate school for Latino students. When paired with gender discordant mentors, Latina students were 70% less likely to present their URE projects at a professional conference.
