One patient in the transforaminal group had post-procedure radiculitis, and another one had vagal reaction (hypotension). In three cases, with preserved interlaminar space, injections were performed by posterior interlaminar puncture, and only one adverse event was reported (post-puncture headache).
In SMA patients with previous spinal surgery, the use of imaging-guided intervention is necessary for administering intrathecal nusinersen. Transforaminal technique is indicated in patients for whom the interlaminar space is not available, and injections should always be guided by either CT or fluoroscopy.

The Brazilian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (BCTRIMS) has launched an initiative to determine the prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Brazil, based on key cities deemed representative of their regions in terms of demographic and environmental features.
To investigate the prevalence rate of MS in Joinville.
We reviewed the medical records of all patients who lived in Joinville and met the 2010 McDonald's diagnostic criteria revised for MS on the prevalence day (March 11, 2016). Potential MS patients included individuals treated by all practicing neurologists in the city and the ones found in patients' association and the database of the Municipal Department of Health. MAPK inhibitor Advertisements about the survey were also broadcast on radio and television. Patients who were not living in Joinville on the prevalence day were excluded. All potential MS patients were invited to an in-person diagnostic review, carried out by a panel of experienced neurologists with special expertise in Msed risk of MS associated with latitude gradient and European ancestry. Prevalence studies in other cities from Southern Brazil with no significant internal migration and taking part in this broad project may clarify this issue.
Parkinson's disease (PD) produces autonomic changes, indicating lower parasympathetic modulation and global variability, but these changes need further studying regarding geometric methods.
To investigate the autonomic modulation in individuals with PD using heart rate variability (HRV) indices obtained through geometric methods.
This is a cross-sectional study that assessed 50 individuals, split into two groups PD group (PDG; n=26; 75.36±5.21 years) and control group (CG; n=24; 75.36±5.21 years). We evaluated the autonomic modulation by measuring the heart rate beat-to-beat for 30 min with the individual in supine rest using a heart rate monitor and assessed geometric indices (RRtri, TINN, SD1, SD2, SD1/SD2 ratio, and qualitative analysis of the Poincaré plot).
Significant reductions were found in RRtri, TINN, SD1, and SD2 indices among PDG compared to CG. Regarding the SD1/SD2 ratio, no significant changes were detected between the groups. The Poincaré plot demonstrated that individuals with PD had lower beat-to-beat dispersion in RR intervals, in addition to greater long-term dispersion of RR intervals compared to CG.
The results suggest a reduction in the parasympathetic autonomic modulation and global variability in individuals with PD compared to controls, regardless of sex, age, and body mass index.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Despite alarming evidence on dementia prevalence, the condition is still underdiagnosed by general practitioners (GPs) in primary care. Early detection of the disease is beneficial for patients and relatives, who should be provided comprehensive guidance on dealing with dementia complications, covering medical, family and social aspects, thereby providing an opportunity to plan for the future.
The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge of and attitudes toward dementia held by GPs from a city in the interior of São Paulo State, Brazil.
A non-randomized intervention study was conducted involving six lectures about dementia. Before and after the intervention, the participating physicians completed two quizzes about knowledge of and attitudes towards dementia. The study was carried out in the primary care services of the town and a total of 34 GPs participated in the study.
The mean age of the sample was 33.9 (±10.2) years and the majority (76.5%) of the sample had not undertaken medical residency training. The mean number of correct answers on the Knowledge Quiz about dementia before and after the training intervention was 59.6 and 71.2% (p<0.001), respectively. The comparison of the mean responses on the Attitude Quiz revealed no statistically significant difference between the two applications of the instrument, before and after intervention (p=0.059).
More training for GPs on dementia should be provided.

Syphilis is an endemic disease, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with vascular involvement in large vessels (aortitis), but no clear relationship with stroke patients, except for those who presented with meningovascular neurosyphilis.
To investigate the relationship between a positive history of syphilis determined by serological testing and ischemic stroke etiology, particularly small vessel disease (SVD).
In total, 269 first-ever ischemic stroke patients admitted to the stroke unit were tested for syphilis. Patients with neurosyphilis were excluded. All patients were classified according to the ASCOD phenotyping as SVD - when SVD was the potential causal mechanism (S1) - or non-SVD - when SVD was uncertain (S2), unlike (S3), or not detected (S0).
Syphilis was positive in 32 (12%) patients. When comparing patients with positive and negative serology, the only significant difference was SVD as the causal mechanism (S1) in patients with positive results 9 (28%) vs. link2 22 (9%), p<0.01.
The current study showed that the frequency of positive syphilis serological test was higher in patients with first-ever ischemic stroke and SVD as the potential causal mechanism. This finding could be related to the endothelial dysfunction occurring in syphilis.

BOR is increasingly consolidating itself as the most important journal in Brazilian dental research. link3 However, much still needs to be done. The hard and continuous work to improve the journal will guarantee its permanent growth and result in new achievements for the benefit of the entire dental scientific community. Our study aimed to explore the views and experiences in oral health and oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of persons with schizophrenia (PWS) in order to expand the understanding of the factors that either limit or facilitate their healthcare pathway, which can ultimately optimize their oral health and/or OHRQoL. A qualitative study was conducted in France in the Côte d'Or department (530 000 in habitants) centered on PWS's perceived meanings regarding oral health or OHRQoL, and semi-structured individual interviews were used. A conventional content analysis approach was chosen in order to highlight unrevealed themes. A sample of 20 PWS (12 males; 8 females) with a median age was 45.8 (± 9.5) were recruited to assess views and experiences regarding OHRQoL, which were focused on three dimensions an individual dimension related to experience of "oral symptoms", a second dimension related to experience of "stress and its management", and a third related to "Autonomy dimension in oral health". We showed that PWS clearly expressed their mental representations of oral health and OHRQoL. This study supports that PWS were able to define their needs and had the ability to discuss their oral health and OHRQoL. These finding could be used to support specific interventions for this population to better manage the negative impact of antipsychotics and help them to consult dentists on a regular basis. The aim of this study was to investigate the segregation patterns of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) in families, given the evidence that its etiology is influenced by genetics. Clinically, MIH may be detected in parents and/or siblings of MIH-affected children. Our study included children with at least one first permanent molar affected by MIH (proband) and their first-degree relatives (parents and siblings). The participants were examined clinically to detect MIH, according to the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry criteria (2003). A total of 101 nuclear families (391 individuals) were studied. Proband diagnosis was followed by MIH classification of the subject, his parents and siblings, as affected, unaffected, or unknown. Segregation analysis was performed using the multivariate logistic regression model of the Statistical Analysis for Genetic Epidemiology package, and segregation models (general transmission, environmental, major gene, dominant, codominant and recessive models). The Akaike information criterion (AIC) was used to evaluate the most parsimonious model. In all, 130 affected individuals, 165 unaffected individuals, and 96 unknown individuals were studied. Severe MIH was found in 50.7% of the cases. A segregation analysis performed for MIH revealed the following different models environmental and dominance (p = 0.05), major gene (p = 0.04), codominant (p = 0.15) and recessive models (p = 0.03). According to the AIC values, the codominant model was the most parsimonious (AIC = 308.36). Our results suggest that the codominant model could be the most likely for inheriting MIH. This result strengthens the evidence that genetic factors, such as multifactorial complex defect, influence MIH.
to analyze the concept of domestic violence based on its use in health sciences, humanities, and exact sciences according to Rodgers' evolutionary model.
this is a concept analysis based on Rodgers' evolutionary conceptual model. Ninety-six articles were included in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French, which had a definition of domestic violence, having identified the antecedents, attributes and consequences and produced a model case.
twenty-two attributes, ten antecedents and eight consequences were identified.
from antecedents, attributes and consequences, it was possible to identify the connection between domestic violence and gender issues, especially patriarchal, being seen in a normalized way by society and causing consequences to the victims' physical and psychological health.
