Binary charge-transfer complex polymorphs composed of perylene and 4,8-bis(dicyanomethylene)-4,8-dihydrobenzo-[1,2-b4,5-b']-dithiophene (DTTCNQ) were synthesized separately via a simple artificial nucleation-tailoring method, in both macroscopic and microscopic cocrystal engineering manners. The two polymorphs were testified to be independently thermosalient in the solid state, and the specific self-assembly derived from homogeneous or heterogeneous nucleation by assistance of governable thermodynamic/kinetic drive, leading to a change in the ordered p-n stacking structure. The as-prepared polymorphic microcrystals afforded a significantly varied (opto)electronic property high n-type transporting and good photoresponsivity for β-complex, and ambipolar transporting with ignorable photoresponsivity for α-complex, attributing to the different charge-transfer and supramolecular alignment. This work provides us a new route to the exploitation of donor-acceptor complex family, making it possible to develop functional materials and devices based on variable supramolecular binary structures.Drug-induced kidney injury (DIKI) is a significant contributor of both acute and chronic kidney injury and remains a major concern in drug development and clinical care. However, current clinical diagnostic methods often fail to accurately and timely detect nephrotoxicity. This study reports the development of activatable molecular urinary reporters (MURs) that are able to specifically detect urinary biomarkers including γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alanine aminopeptidase (AAP), and N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG). By virtue of their discrete absorption and emission properties, the mixture of MURs can serve as a cocktail sensor for multiplex optical urinalysis in the mouse models of drug-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The MURs cocktail not only detects nephrotoxicity earlier than the tested clinical diagnostic methods in drug-induced AKI and CKD mice models, but also possesses a higher diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, MURs hold great promise for detection of kidney function in both preclinical drug screening and clinical settings.Even through many physiological pathways of resveratrol have been established since its association with the "French paradox" in 1992, its exact pathological roles are still ambiguous and disputable. To understand how resveratrol exerts its effects would not only enlighten the pathogenesis study of related diseases, but also promote the development of more potent molecules. Focusing on the reported cellular directly and indirectly ROS scavenging processes of resveratrol, we evaluated the activation effect of the inherent antioxidation thiols system in subcellular level by two cysteine (Cys) specific fluorescent probes mitochondria targetable Mito-1 and lysosomes targetable Ly-1. We found that 50 μM resveratrol treatment could induce distinct Cys up-regulation in both mitochondria and lysosomes which might be a general biological phenomenon in various cell lines for the first time.In this work, we report the surface-based electrical detection of singlet oxygen using the emerging fluorophore-induced plasmonic current (PC) technique. By this method, we utilize the fluorescent "turn on" response of the well-known singlet oxygen sensor green (SOSG) singlet oxygen (1O2) fluorescent probe for the generation of fluorophore-induced PC in a silver nanoparticle film. To demonstrate the potential utility of this new technique, a photosensitizing molecule is used to generate 1O2 in a solution containing the SOSG probe. The resulting change in SOSG fluorescence quantum yield and extinction coefficient permits stronger energy transfer from the SOSG probe to a proximal silver nanoparticle island film located in the near-electric field of the probe. This yields an increase in the induced electric current flow, allowing for the detection of the 1O2 analyte. To the author's knowledge, this represents the first detection of the reactive oxygen species 1O2 utilizing fluorophore-induced PC methodology and even broader electrical detection of 1O2. This is significant as it opens the possibility for 1O2 detection methods which do not require a traditional "photodetector" and associated optics, simplifying the instrumentation over existing fluorescence detection methods and potentially even lowering the cost. The facet of optical fibers coated with nanostructures enables the development of ultraminiature and sensitive (bio)chemical sensors. The sensors reported until now lack specificity, and the fabrication methods offer poor reproducibility. Here, we demonstrate that by transforming the facet of conventional multimode optical fibers onto plasmon resonance energy transfer antenna surfaces, the specificity issues may be overcome. To do so, a low-cost chemical approach was developed to immobilize gold nanoparticles on the optical fiber facet in a reproducible and controlled manner. Our nanosensors are highly selective as plasmon resonance energy transfer is a nanospectroscopic effect that only occurs when the resonance wavelength of the nanoparticles matches that of the target parameter. As an example, we demonstrate the selective detection of picomolar concentrations of copper ions in water. Our sensor is 1000 times more sensitive than the state-of-the-art technologies. An additional advantage of our nanosensors is their simple interrogation; it comprises of a low-power light-emitting diode, a multimode optical fiber coupler, and a miniature spectrometer. We believe that the plasmon resonance energy transfer-based fiber-optic platform reported here may pave the way for the development of a new generation of ultraminiature, portable, and hypersensitive and selective (bio)chemical sensors.BACKGROUND Ingestion of metallic foreign bodies (MFBs) is a frequent occurrence in children and is commonly diagnosed via X-rays. In recent years, the handheld metal detector (HMD) has been increasingly adopted by several paediatric hospitals as it is considered an effective and accurate diagnostic tool that avoids exposure to ionizing radiations. Sensitivity of HMD has been reported high (99.4%) in case of coin ingestion, but significantly lower (46%) when considering the ingestion of other types of MFBs. METHODS We tested the effectiveness of the HMD in diagnosing ingested MFBs in children less than 14 years of age, in our Paediatric Emergency Department (PED). We prospectively evaluated all cases of MFBs ingestion that presented at the PED of our hospital from March 2015 to July 2017. RESULTS 98 patients were included. The overall sensitivity was 63.2% (79.5% for coins, 25.5% for batteries and 56% for other objects) while the specificity was 95%. The HMD could have replaced the X-Ray examination only if a MFB was detected below the xyphoid process. CONCLUSIONS Based on our findings, a negative result of HMD is not sufficient to exclude an ingestion of MFBs. Therefore, in case of an evocative history and depending on type and size of the foreign body, a radiological investigation is still necessary.BACKGROUND Fetal gender is considered as one of significant predictors of pregnancy and perinatal outcome. Aim - To assess impact of fetal gender on perinatal outcome. METHODS Present observational study was conducted in Obstetrics and Gynecology department of rural tertiary center of Northern India over one year (January-December 2018) on all randomly selected antenatal women at gestation ≥28 weeks, delivering by any route (Cesarean/Vaginal) and fulfilling inclusion criteria were enrolled. Immediately after delivery, neonatal birth weight was measured using table top beam weighing scale. Apgar scores at 1- and 5-minutes, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit admission, neonatal complications were assessed by pediatrician. Adverse perinatal outcome including neonatal morbidities (prematurity, neonatal intensive care unit admission, neonatal complications) and perinatal mortality were compared between two genders. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 22 version software. RESULTS Of 3,085 delivered neonates, 1,450(47%) were females, 1,633(52.9%) males and two (0.06%) had ambiguous genitalia, hence excluded. Mean±SD for neonatal birth weight for males was 2.77±0.540 Kg and females 2.65±0.506 Kg (p=.0000). 1- and 5-minutes Apgar scores for male neonate were 6.81±1.565, 8.51±1.841and for females 6.98±1.184, 8.70±1.383 respectively (p=0.001). NICU admission rate, need for oxygen and intubation, complications were significantly higher for male neonates (p0.05). CONCLUSIONS Male neonates had higher birth weight, but adverse perinatal outcome as compared to females.INTRODUCTION Since its diffusion in the 1990s, the Internet has developed into a fully integrated component of the lives of teenagers across the globe. As use of the Internet by underage youth has evolved and increased over the past decades, concerns about how technology may contribute to minors becoming victims of online sex crimes, including online grooming, have heightened. The present literature review contributes to the existing knowledge base regarding the epidemiology of the online grooming process, exploring key themes and issues arising in this area. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION We conducted a review of the current literature by an initial database research of papers published since 1990. Three independent reviewers selected relevant articles, initially based on title and abstract analysis, then by full text in order to make a final determination. After the final selection, a total of 37 articles were reviewed. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS The articles reviewed report highly heterogenous results with regards to epidemiological data, estimating a prevalence of the online grooming phenomenon between 9% and 19%. Factors influencing minors' risk of online grooming included increasing age, gender, sexual minority orientation, diagnosis of mental disease, conflictual relationships with parents and risk-taking behaviors (eg. chat room and social networking site use). CONCLUSIONS Although the true prevalence of online grooming is not available, it is a significant issue among minors. It is thus important to educate youth on responsible internet use, starting at the earliest age and continuing during adolescence. We conducted a retrospective analysis of cases of SUID referred to the SIDS-ALTE Center of the Liguria Region (Italy) from 2010 to 2018. Nimodipine research buy In all cases, the death scene was inspected and a multidisciplinary post-mortem evaluation was conducted. Our aim was to analyze the epidemiological data and etiological distribution. We examined 15 cases initially classified as sudden infant death. In all cases, the death was initially unexplained. Seven cases involved males and eight involved females. Their mean age was 67,47 days; the youngest victim was 2 days old, while the oldest was 8.5 months (253 days). In 7 cases, the post-mortem analysis showed an infection of lung. In 4 cases, the prone position of the infant during sleep was identified as a risk factor. In only one case did the cause of death remain unexplained and it was classified as sudden infant death syndrome II according to San Diego classification. In the forensic approach to cases of SUID, it is always important to conduct a thorough multidisciplinary investigation.
