The leading formulation exhibited favourable swelling, mucoadhesion, drug release and permeation-enhancing properties, suiting the needs for efficient brain-targeted delivery. Results of in vitro biocompatibility and physico-chemical stability studies confirmed the leading formulation potential for safe and efficient donepezil nose-to-brain delivery. Kinesio tapes (KTs) are tapes used in physical therapy and athletics. We sought to evaluate if wearing KTs for extended periods of time increases exposure to antibiotic resistant opportunistic pathogens and/or effects normal human skin bacteria.

The study consisted of 10 volunteers wearing 9 KTs on their arms for 5 consecutive days. Microorganisms were isolated from fragments collected on the second and fifth day then analyzed. We found that KTs accumulated environmental bacteria. Among 22 species 8 were opportunistic pathogens, and all of them exhibited resistance to at least one antibiotic. None of the tapes produced inhibition zones against S. aureus. One tape, Leukotape P, caused growth inhibition in non-pathogenic S. epidermidis and M. luteus. The adhesive material of the tapes inhibited the growth of all tested bacteria.

These results indicate that KTs may increase the exposure to antibiotic resistant pathogens which can accumulate from the environment. Further, extended exposure could lead to changes in normal skin microbiota, potentially contributing to increased risks of skin infections.

The medium- and long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on pulmonary function are still unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the pulmonary functions in healthcare professionals who had persistent complaints after contracting COVID-19 and returning to work.

The study included COVID-19-infected healthcare professionals from the Düzce University Medical Faculty Hospital who volunteered to participate. Medical histories, medical records, pulmonary function tests, the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) test, and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) were used to collect data from all participants.

The study included 53 healthcare professionals, with an average age of 38 ± 10 years (min 24 years and max 71 years), including 29 female (54.7%) and 24 male (45.3%) participants. Of the participants, 22.6% were smokers, 35.8% (19 individuals) had comorbidities, and 17% (9 individuals) were hospitalized. The mean length of stay was 9 ± 4 days (mean ± standard deviation). The most prevaleneffort dyspnea (24.6%), weakness (9.5%), and muscle aches (7.6%).

In November 2019, a questionnaire-based point-prevalence survey, eliciting the adherence of 14 Tyrolean hospitals to the recommendations of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was performed. Additionally, standard infection control measures performed by different medical (clinical and infection control specialists) disciplines as well as the performed infection control measures of nurses and physicians were compared.

The survey revealed varying adherence to CDC-recommendations of different medical disciplines, with highest congruence by the infection control specialists and lower congruencies by all surveyed clinical disciplines. Concordance rate between nurses and physicians was high.

Explanations for the varying congruencies of clinical disciplines on the one hand and the infection control specialists on the other hand may be versatile. Possible lacks of knowledge about the required hygiene measures should be taken into account.

Stabilized hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is increasingly used as a hospital disinfectant and antiseptic, yet its effect on N95 filtration facemask respirators (FFR) is unknown. These FFRs could also contribute to fomite-based transmission of nosocomial infections if worn for extended use between patient rooms.

Filtration performance of N95 FFR fabric swatches was assessed after various levels of HOCl exposure. N95 swatches were then contaminated with 10
Escherichia coli or 10
Staphylococci aureus and treated with HOCl solution, 70% ethyl alcohol, or normal saline. Surviving bacterial numbers were assessed by plate counts.

The size-dependent filtration efficiency of HOCl-sprayed N95 FFR fabric ranged from 96% to 100%, showing no significant change. Flow resistance testing revealed almost no change compared to control. Submersion in HOCl, but not spraying, had an excellent bactericidal effect on contaminated swatches.

The role of the outer hydrophobic layer of N95 FFRs is discussed regarding the effects of HOCl on filtration and bacterial decontamination.

Radiopharmaceuticals preparation unit, such as every aseptic preparation units, are strictly monitored in terms of microbiological contamination. Samples from cleaning buckets taken by dry swabbing were at first negative, but the use of a non-routinely used sampling method allowed to discover the reservoir of this persistent contamination.
