Mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs) humanin (HN) and mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c (MOTS-c) are involved in cell survival, suppression of apoptosis, and metabolism. Circulating levels of MDPs are altered in chronic diseases such as diabetes type 2 and chronic kidney disease. Whether acute resistance (RE) or endurance (EE) exercise modulates circulating levels of HN and MOTS-c in humans is unknown. Following familiarization, subjects were randomized to EE (n = 10, 45 min cycling at 70% of estimated V̇O2max), RE (n = 10, 4 sets × 7RM, leg press and knee extension), or control (CON, n = 10). Skeletal muscle biopsies and blood samples were collected before and at 30 min and 3 h following exercise. Plasma concentration of HN and MOTS-c, skeletal muscle MOTS-c as well as gene expression of exercise-related genes were analyzed. Acute EE and RE promoted changes in skeletal muscle gene expression typically seen in response to each exercise modality (c-Myc, 45S pre-rRNA, PGC-1α-total, and PGC-1α-ex1b). At rest, circulating levels of HN were positively correlated to MOTS-c levels and age. Plasma levels of MDPs were not correlated to fitness outcomes [V̇O2max, leg strength, or muscle mitochondrial (mt) DNA copy number]. Circulating levels of HN were significantly elevated by acute EE but not RE. MOTS-C levels showed a trend to increase after EE. These results indicate that plasma MDP levels are not related to fitness status but that acute EE increases circulating levels of MDPs, in particular HN.NEW & NOTEWORTHY In this manuscript, we report for the first time, to our knowledge, the response of circulating levels of mitochondrial-derived peptides humanin and MOTS-c to acute resistance and endurance exercise. Our data support that acute endurance exercise stimulates MDP levels in plasma, whereas acute resistance exercise does not.
The increasing use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to treat muscle injuries raises concerns because transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) in PRP may promote fibrosis in the injured muscle and thus impair muscle regeneration.
To investigate whether suramin (a TGF-β inhibitor) can reduce muscle fibrosis to improve healing of the injured muscle after PRP treatment and identify the underlying molecular mechanism.
Controlled laboratory study.
Myoblasts isolated from the gastrocnemius muscle of Sprague Dawley rats were treated with PRP or PRP plus suramin. MTT assays were performed to evaluate cell viability. The expression of fibrosis-associated proteins (such as type I collagen and fibronectin), Smad2, and phosphorylated Smad2 was determined using Western blot analysis and immunofluorescent staining. An anti-TGF-β antibody was employed to verify the role of TGF-β in fibronectin expression. Gastrocnemius muscles were injured through a partial transverse incision and then treated using PRP or PRP plus suramsuramin use reduced fibrosis in the injured muscle and promoted healing without negatively affecting the muscle's contractile properties. The underlying molecular mechanism may be associated with the phosphorylated Smad2 pathway.

Belize has one of the highest cervical cancer burdens among Latin American and Caribbean countries, despite the implementation of national policies to increase access to prevention and treatment services. This study evaluates the policies, infrastructure, and workforce of the cervical cancer management system in Belize to inform capacity building efforts.
In 2018, health facility assessments were conducted across all six districts of Belize at the national pathology facility and 12 public facilities identified as critical to cervical cancer control. Human and infrastructure resource availability and existing policies related to cervical cancer screening and treatment services were assessed through a structured instrument.
The public cervical cancer screening workforce in Belize consists of 75 primary care nurses and physicians-one per 1,076 screening-eligible women, with 44% conducting rural outreach. All districts have at least one screening facility, but 50% perform screening services only once per weentrated in the largest district. Screening, outreach, and pathology are limited mostly by resource availability. This study characterizes the current capacity of services in Belize and pinpoints health system components for future investment and capacity-building efforts.
Radiotherapy (RT) treatment at public hospitals in Nigeria is often interrupted by prolonged periods of machine breakdown because of insufficient funds for maintenance and repair. These delays have prompted the uptake of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to acquire and maintain RT equipment. This study aimed to understand Nigeria's current RT capacity and the impact of PPPs on RT availability and cost.
Eleven radiation oncologists, each representing one of the 11 RT centers in Nigeria (eight public and three private), were invited to complete a survey on the type, status, acquisition, and maintenance plan of existing RT equipment, cost incurred by patients for external-beam radiation (EBRT) and brachytherapy treatment, and number of patients treated per year on each machine. Type and status of equipment at nonresponding facilities were obtained through literature review and confirmed with the facility.
A total of eight (81%) respondents completed the survey, all representing public centers, three of which reported PPP use. They reported 11 megavoltage units in total (seven linear accelerators [LINACs] and four Cobalt-60s) and 10 brachytherapy afterloaders. Of those, 57% (4/7) of the LINACs, 100% (4/4) of the Cobalt-60s, and 63% (7/11) of the afterloaders were in clinical use. All commissioned equipment supported by PPPs (three LINACs and one afterloader) were in operation. The public EBRT equipment were nonfunctional 35% of the year (resulting in 60% fewer patients treated per year). The PPP EBRT and afterloaders did not experience any periods of breakdown, but PPP costs were 338% higher than public equipment.

Method Twenty typically developing preschool children were taught novel words using an RSR learning schedule for some words and an immediate retrieval (IR) learning schedule for other words. During these years, there are considerable individual differences in this skill, with some children being highly skilled narrators (i.e., precocious) relative to peers of their age. In this study, we explored the contribution of three lower-level language skills to a range of narrative abilities, from children performing below expected levels for their age to those performing much higher than the expected levels for their age. We speculated that individual differences in lower-level skills would contribute meaningfully to variability in narrative skills. Method Using a sample of 336 children between 3 and 6 years of age (M = 4.27 years, SD = 0.65), both multiple regression and quantile regression approaches were used to explore how vocabulary, grammar, and phonological awareness account for variance in children's "narrative ability index" (NAI), an index of how children scored on the Narrative Assessment Protocol-Second Edition relative to the expected performance for their age. Results Multiple regression results indicated that lower-level language skills explained a significant amount of variance (approximately 13%) in children's NAI scores. Quantile regression results indicated that phonological awareness and vocabulary accounted for significant variance in children's NAI scores at lower quantiles. At the median quantile, vocabulary and grammar accounted for significant variance in children's NAI scores. For precocious narrators, only vocabulary accounted for a significant amount of variance in children's NAI scores. Conclusion Results indicate that lower-level language skills work in conjunction to support narrative skills at different ability levels, improving understanding of how lower-level language skills contribute across a spectrum of higher-level linguistic abilities.Soil salinization is one main environmental factor restricting plant growth and agricultural productivity. However, phytoremediation is one of the important means to improve saline-alkali soil by planting halophytes or salt-tolerant plants. In order to study whether there are differences among soil microorganisms in different phytoremediation, the effects of four plants, including alfalfa (MX), oil sunflower (YK), maize (YM) and ryegrass (HMC) on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity and microbial community diversity and composition were investigated in this study and the relationships between microbial community structure and soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity were analyzed. The results showed that all plants treatments significantly decreased pH, TS (total saltinity) and BD (bulk density), while increased OM (organic matter), TN (total nitrogen), AN (available nitrogen), TP (total phosphorus), AP (available phosphorus), TK (total potassium) and TPOR (total porosity), and the number crobial diversity and community structure were different.Phytoremediation can significantly decreased pH, TS and BD, while increased OM, TN, AN, TP, AP, TK and TPOR in saline-alkali soil.All plants increased the activity of nitrite reductase and decreased the activity of urease.
