To describe the experiences of Italian nurses who have been urgently and compulsorily allocated to a newly established COVID-19 sub-intensive care unit.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, no studies have documented the experience of nurses urgently reallocated to a newly created unit.

A qualitative descriptive study. Twenty-four nurses working in a sub-intensive care unit created for COVID-19 patients participated in four focus groups. Audio-recorded interviews were verbatim-transcribed; then, a thematic analysis was performed.

The experience of nurses was summarized along three lines (a) 'becoming a frontline nurse', (b) 'living a double-faced professional experience' and (c) 'advancing in nursing practice'.

Nurses who experienced being mandatorily recruited and urgently reallocated to a COVID-19 unit lived through a mix of negative feelings in the early stages, a double-faced situation during the episode and, at the end, the perception of global growth as a person, as a team and as a professional.

Nurse managers could play a key role in identifying and preparing nurses in advance to mitigate their concerns and their sense of unpreparedness. The value attributed to nursing care should be promoted both during and after the current COVID-19 pandemic.

To develop a model illustrating the factors that can influence care needs in daily living (CNDL) of older adults and the pathways between these.

The care needs in community-dwelling older adults have increased sharply. A better understanding of the elderly's CNDL would thus help policymakers define which types of support and services should be given.

A multicentre study with structural equation modelling was conducted in this study. We recruited 3,448 community-dwelling older adults in China by using a stratified random cluster sampling technique.

Physical and mental health was the strongest predictor of CNDL. Both age and living situation had positive effects on CNDL, while economic factors, social support and family support were the major risk factors for CNDL.

The presented model provides a better understanding of how to address CNDL in the targeted population. The older adults who are the oldest, low-income, non-empty nesters, and with poor self-rated health or the signs of loneliness should be firstly targeted for daily assistance.

Using this model could provide health authorities and managers with the information of distinguishing between the priority group and the strategies for easing the caregiving burden in older adults care, and thus improving resource utilization.

At present, however, there is a lack of understanding of the potential window and self-discharge of this aqueous energy storage technology. This study concerns a systematic investigation of the potential window of this device by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge. Hybrid supercapacitors based on commercial activated carbon (AC) demonstrate a wide and stable potential window (0.2 V to 1.8 V), high specific capacitances (308 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and 110 F g-1 at 30 A g-1 ), good cycling stability (10000 cycles with 95.1 % capacitance retention), and a high energy density (104.8 Wh kg-1 at 383.5 W kg-1 ), based on the active materials. The mechanism involves simultaneous adsorption-desorption of ions on the AC cathode and zinc ion plating/stripping on the Zn anode. This work leads to better understanding of such devices and will aid future development of practical high-performance aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors based on commercial carbon materials, thus accelerating the deployment of these hybrid supercapacitors and filling the gap between supercapacitors and batteries.Infertility is an increasingly common health issue, with rising prevalence in advanced parental age. Environmental stress has established negative effects on reproductive health, however, the impact of altering cellular metabolism and its endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) on fertility remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate the loss of proline dehydrogenase, the first committed step in proline catabolism, is relatively benign. In contrast, disruption of alh-6, which facilitates the second step of proline catabolism by converting 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C) to glutamate, results in premature reproductive senescence, specifically in males. The premature reproductive senescence in alh-6 mutant males is caused by aberrant ROS homeostasis, which can be countered by genetically limiting the first committed step of proline catabolism that functions upstream of ALH-6 or by pharmacological treatment with antioxidants. Taken together, our work uncovers proline metabolism as a critical component of normal sperm function that can alter the rate of aging in the male reproductive system.
To verify our hypothesis that 'there is periodicity in nurse call occurrence'.

It is difficult to plan nursing management because nursing tasks can vary widely, seemingly at random. One of the most useful pieces of information for decision-making is periodicity. If periodicity is present, it should be possible to predict the occurrence of tasks and make preventive strategies. In this study, we focused on the nurse call, which plays an important role in nursing practice.

We used nurse call logs that accumulated automatically when patients pushed the button. Data were obtained from 1 January 2014 to 30 September 2017 (1,369days) in a university hospital. The total number was 5,982,935. Periodicity was verified by the autocorrelation function.

The value of the autocorrelation function increased regularly, which demonstrates there was periodicity in nurse call occurrence.

Our hypothesis was accepted. The presence of periodicity indicates that nurse call occurrence is not a random event but has a pattern.

If we can identify patterns such as the time that nurse calls frequently occur, managers can implement two strategies one, assigning more nurses and two, moving tasks other than nurse calls to another time.

Also needed are clinically relevant polymicrobial biofilm models that can be utilized to assess the efficacy of innovative therapeutics against mature biofilms. We successfully developed a highly reproducible porcine ex vivo skin wound polymicrobial biofilm model using clinical isolates of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. This ex vivo biofilm model was then used to assess the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of an easily fabricated chitosan hydrogel incorporating the natural antimicrobial peptide epsilon-poly-L-lysine. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated against planktonic cultures in vitro and against mature biofilms ex vivo. The antibiofilm efficiency of the hydrogels was especialicate polymicrobial biofilms consisting of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of origanum oil (ORO), hydrolysable tannins (HYT) and tea saponin (TES) on methane (CH4 ) emission, rumen fermentation, productive performance and gas exchange in sheep by using in vitro and in vivo methods. The ORO, HYT and TES additive levels were normalized per kg dry matter (DM) in both in vitro and in vivo experiments ORO-0, 10, 20 and 40 ml/kg; HYT-0, 15, 30 and 60 g/kg; and TES-0, 15, 30 and 60 g/kg, respectively. During in vitro incubation, 40 ml/kg ORO linearly decreased CH4 emission (p less then 0.05); 20 and 40 ml/kg ORO cubically decreased carbon dioxide (CO2 ) production (p less then 0.05), and rumen pH was cubically raised with the increasing ORO additive level (p less then 0.01). The 60 g/kg HYT cubically decreased CH4 production (p less then 0.05). The pH of 60 g/kg HYT was higher than that of 15 and 30 g/kg (p less then 0.01); the pH of 20 g/kg TES was higher than that of 5 g/kg (p less then 0.05). In the in vivo experiments, 40 ml/kg ORO inhibited dry matter intake (p less then 0.01) cubically and reduced average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) cubically (p less then 0.05), and 20 or 40 ml/kg ORO linearly decreased CH4 production based on per day or metabolic weight (W0.75 ) (p less then 0.05). Both 30 and 60 g/kg HYT linearly inhibited CH4 emission on the bases of per day and W0.75 (p less then 0.05). The 20 g/kg TES improved the apparent digestibility of crude protein (p less then 0.05), 10 and 20 g/kg of TES decreased CH4 emission (p less then 0.05), and 5 g/kg of TES reduced O2 consumption and CO2 production (p less then 0.05). In conclusion, these three plant extracts all showed the abilities on mitigating CH4 emission of sheep with appropriate additive ranges.C(sp3 )-Cl bonds are present in numerous biologically active small molecules, and an ideal route for their preparation is by the chlorination of a C(sp3 )-H bond. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/coti-2.html However, most current methods for the chlorination of C(sp3 )-H bonds are insufficiently site selective and tolerant of functional groups to be applicable to the late-stage functionalization of complex molecules. We report a method for the highly selective chlorination of tertiary and benzylic C(sp3 )-H bonds to produce the corresponding chlorides, generally in high yields. The reaction occurs with a mixture of an azidoiodinane, which generates a selective H-atom abstractor under mild conditions, and a readily-accessible and inexpensive copper(II) chloride complex, which efficiently transfers a chlorine atom. The reaction's exceptional functional group tolerance is demonstrated by the chlorination of >30 diversely functionalized substrates and the late-stage chlorination of a dozen derivatives of natural products and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
