High EVLWI values were associated with viral persistence, prolonged intensive care treatment and in-hospital mortality (23.2 ± 6.7% vs. 30.3 ± 6.0%, p = 0.025). Also, EVLWI showed a significant between-subjects (r = - 0.60; p = 0.001) and within-subjects correlation (r = - 0.27; p = 0.028) to Horowitz index. Compared to non COVID-19 ARDS, COVID-19 results in markedly elevated EVLWI-values in patients with ARDS. High EVLWI reflects a non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema in COVID-19 ARDS and could serve as parameter to monitor ARDS progression on ICU.There are many clinical scoring criteria for predicting the risk of death in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), but most of the indicators are complex to calculate and are not suitable for use in primary hospitals. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red cell distribution width (RDW) are blood routine indicators that are easy to obtain and may help primary hospitals to evaluate the risk of death in patients with STEMI. Our aim was to explore the predictive value of NLR combined with RDW in the long-term prognosis of patients with STEMI after emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A total of 181 patients with STEMI who underwent emergency PCI in the Affiliated Hospital of Pu-tian University from January 2017 to August 2018 were selected. Clinical profile, prognosis of all patients were collected. P value less then 0.05 was considered significant. In all patients, cardiovascular death during the follow-up period was defined as cardiovascular death group, and surviving during the follow-up period was defined as survival group. There were no significant differences in demography and comorbidities between the two groups. The differences between the two groups in NLR, RDW, C-reactive protein, N-terminal-pro B type natriuretic peptide were statistically significant (P less then 0.01). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that NLR (OR = 1.122, 95% CI 1.041 ~ 1.210, P = 0.003) and RDW (OR = 1.288, 95% CI 1.126 ~ 1.472, P = 0.0005) were important predictors of mortality in patients with STEMI (P less then 0.05). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that as the NLR increased, the risk of death increased (P less then 0.001). In conclusion, NLR and RDW are independent predictors of cardiovascular death in patients with STEMI, and they have a certain predictive value. In post-stroke patients, a decreased adherence to antiplatelet drugs is a major challenge in the prevention of recurrent stroke. Previously, we reported an antiplatelet vaccine against S100A9 in mice, but the use of Freund's adjuvant and the difference in amino acid sequences in epitopes between mice and humans were problematic for clinical use. Here, we redesigned the S100A9 vaccine for the common sequence in both humans and monkeys and examined its effects in cynomolgus monkeys with Alum adjuvant. First, we assessed several candidate epitopes and selected 102 to 112 amino acids as the suitable epitope, which could produce antibodies. When this peptide vaccine was intradermally injected into 4 cynomolgus monkeys with Alum, the antibody against human S100A9 was successfully produced. Anti-thrombotic effects were shown in two monkeys in a mixture of vaccinated serum and fresh whole blood from another cynomolgus monkey. Additionally, the anti-thrombotic effects were partially inhibited by the epitope peptide, indicating the feasibility of neutralizing anti-thrombotic effects of produced antibodies. Prolongation of bleeding time was not observed in vaccinated monkeys. Although further studies on increasing the effect of vaccine and safety are necessary, this vaccine will be a promising approach to improve adherence to antiplatelet drugs in clinical settings.Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common skin diseases of dogs. Defects in the skin barrier and overproduction of inflammatory cytokines may be the pathogenesis of canine AD. Therefore, the present study was aimed to quantify the gene expression of certain skin barrier proteins and inflammatory cytokines in dogs with AD. Eleven dogs with AD and three healthy dogs were included in the present study. The skin barrier proteins, namely Filaggrin (FLG) and Involucrin (IVL), gene expression was quantified by Real-time PCR in the lesional skin tissues of the atopic dogs and normal skin of the healthy dogs. In addition to the skin proteins, the gene expressions of the interleukin (IL)-13, IL-31, and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were also quantified in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of these dogs. Compared to the healthy dogs, significantly higher (P ≤ 0.01) FLG gene expression and significantly (P ≤ 0.05) lower expression of the IVL gene were quantified in the skin of atopic dogs. Further, the dogs with AD revealed significantly higher expression of TNF-α (P ≤ 0.01), IL-31 (P ≤ 0.05), and IL-13 (P ≤ 0.05) as compared to the healthy dogs. The findings of our present study evidently suggest significantly increased and decreased expressions of FLG and IVL genes, respectively, which may be responsible for disruption of the skin barrier in dogs with AD. While, the over-expressions of TNF-α, IL-31, and IL-13 genes might be attributed to the clinical pathology and manifestations of AD in dogs. However, further studies are warranted to substantiate our hypothesis about pathogenesis and clinical manifestation of AD in dogs by including a large number of animals.Actual sleep status and the association between sleep habits/disorders and emotional/behavioral problems among children in the development stage have not been fully clarified. A questionnaire survey was conducted on the sleep habits/disorders (Brief Child Sleep Questionnaire; BCSQ) and emotional/behavioral problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; SDQ) of 87,548 children enrolled in ordinary classes in nine grade levels from the first grade of elementary school to the third grade of junior high school from December 2009 to April 2010. As school grade increased, children's bedtimes were delayed and sleep duration was reduced by 2.0 h over the nine grade levels. Based on the BCSQ, 18.3% of children were judged to have some type of sleep disorder, and about 30% to 40% of children had sleep symptoms at bedtime, during sleep, and at wake time. Multiple regression analysis showed that emotional and behavioral problems were associated with presence of any sleep symptom, longer sleep latency, and longer awake time after sleep onset, whereas total sleep time was not. Sleep symptoms at wake time were most strongly associated with emotional and behavioral problems. Status of sleep habits/disorders should be considered when interpreting emotional/behavioral problems in school-age children. In this article, we study the effect of various environmental factors on intra-atomic frequency comb (I-AFC) based quantum memory. The effect of the environment is incorporated as random fluctuations and non-uniformity in the parameters such as comb spacing and the optical depth, of the frequency comb. read more We found that the I-AFC is viable for photon storage even for very large fluctuations in the parameters of the frequency comb, which makes I-AFC a robust platform for photon storage. Furthermore, we show that the non-uniform frequency combs without any fluctuations in the comb parameters can also yield efficient quantum memory. Since the intra-atomic frequency combs found in natural atomic systems are often non-uniform, our results suggest that a large class of these systems can be used for I-AFC based efficient quantum memory.Air pollution contributes to the premature death of approximately 428,000 citizens of Europe every year. The adverse effects of air pollution can be observed in respiratory, circulatory systems but also in renal function. We decide to investigate the hypothesis indicating that we can observe not only long- but also short-term impact of air pollution on kidney function. We used linear, log-linear, and logistic regression models to assess the association between renal function and NO2, SO2, and PMs. Results are reported as beta (β) coefficients and odds ratios (OR) for an increase in interquartile range (IQR) concentration. 3554 patients (median age 66, men 53.2%) were included into final analysis. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was diagnosed in 21.5%. The odds of CKD increased with increase in annual concentration of PM2.5 (OR for IQR increase = 1.07; 95% CI 1.01-1.15, P = 0.037) and NO2 (OR for IQR increase = 1.05; 95% CI 1.01-1.10, P = 0.047). The IQR increase in weekly PM2.5 concentration was associated with 2% reduction in expected eGFR (β = 0.02, 95% CI - 0.03; - 0.01). Medium- and short-term exposure to elevated air pollution levels was associated with a decrease in eGFR and development CKD. The main pollutants affecting the kidneys were PM2.5 and NO2.We previously showed that the physiological concentration of 17β-estradiol in the vaginal environment is sufficient to affect the membrane dynamics and adhesion phenotype of the Lactobacillus crispatus strain CIP104459. However, L. crispatus is a heterogeneous species. Here, we investigated the effect of 17β-estradiol on the recently isolated L. crispatus vaginal strain V4, related to a cluster distant from CIP104459 and at the limit of being a different subspecies. Grown in the same medium, the two strains expressed a highly similar pool of proteins. However, in contrast to CIP104459, L. crispatus V4 showed high aggregation potential and 17β-estradiol promoted this phenotype. This effect was associated with large changes in cell-surface polarity and Lewis acid/base properties. In addition, we observed no effect on the membrane dynamics, contrary to CIP104459. These results can be explained by differences in the properties and organization of the S layer between the two strains. However, as for CIP104459, 17β-estradiol increased biosurfactant production of L. crispatus V4 and their adhesion to vaginal cells. This suggests that 17β-estradiol agonists would be valuable tools to favor a stable re-implantation of L. crispatus in the vaginal mucosa.MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate cancer cell proliferation by binding directly to the untranslated regions of messenger RNA (mRNA). MicroRNA-148a (miR-148a) is expressed at low levels in breast cancer (BC). However, little attention has been paid to the sequestration of miR-148a. Here, we performed a knockdown of miR-148a using anti-miRNA oligonucleotides (AMOs) and investigated the effect on BC cell proliferation. BC cell proliferation was significantly suppressed by AMO flanked by interstrand cross-linked duplexes (CL-AMO), whereas single-stranded and commercially available AMOs had no effect. The suppression was caused by sequestering specifically miR-148a. Indeed, miR-148b, another member of the miR-148 family, was not affected. Importantly, the downregulation of miR-148a induced a greater and longer-lasting inhibition of BC cell proliferation than the targeting of oncogenic microRNA-21 (miR-21) did. We identified thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP), a tumor suppressor gene, as a target of miR-148a and showed that CL-AMO provoked an increase in TXNIP mRNA expression.
