How to Choose the Best Double Stroller
If you're looking for a double stroller there are a variety of options. To help you choose the right one for your family, we spoke with child development expert and mom Katie Billingsley.
It is recommended to choose a stroller that is easy to fold and push to carry. Consider a model that can hold two infant car seats or a toddler who has a riderboard.
Safety
If you want to ensure your children are safe on your walks, look for double strollers that have features like all-terrain tires as well as a brake operated by hand. These wheels and brakes will help you navigate trails or sidewalks without the risk of your children sliding or slipping away. The best double strollers come with plenty of storage space for items for your kids, including snacks and toys.
The first step to choosing the right double stroller is to figure out how old your children are and how far apart they are. A majority of double strollers can only accommodate one child seat. However, some do come with a variety of options that let you pick the seating that's best for your family.
The classic doubles are great for children of similar ages that are keen to interact. Some options have a more double-decker style, allowing the user to place one seat above the other or even attach a rider board for older siblings. Newborns can either be snuggled in a bassinet connected to the frame or with an attachment that lets you look at your baby. If you are expecting twins or already have twins and want to have a twin stroller, it will be the best option.
For more adventurous families opt for a double stroller that can take on off-road terrains or even hike. Many of these strollers were developed with active parents and their children in mind. They come with features that let you take them on any adventure, no matter how rough or high the climbs might be.
The best double strollers have intelligent features that aid in navigation through difficult terrain and in bad weather. For instance this stroller for jogging has a wrist loop for your child so you can be sure that they're safe while running downhill or at speeds that are higher. It also comes with a canopy that covers the entire area and has ventilation to ensure your children stay comfortable during the summer heat.
This model is a lightweight and compact double stroller from Joovy. It weighs in at just over 23 lbs, making it lighter than other single strollers. It's ideal for air travel or storing in trunks or overhead compartments. Additionally, it comes with a huge storage basket and an integrated parking brake that is easy to use.
Seating
Double strollers today are sleeker and can be configured in many ways to suit your family. Some are used as traditional side-by-side strollers while others - like the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double Stroller - function as a base that car seats, toddler seats or bassinets can be plugged into. They are available in a variety of sizes and weights to accommodate children from newborns through kindergarten.
A good double stroller should be a breeze to move and fold, while permitting you to alter the handlebar height so you're able to walk comfortably throughout your excursions. A good handlebar should be easy to hold, and it should invite you to walk in a proper form (ask other parents for advice on this). It should also offer various storage options that accommodate everything you need for your kids.
If your twins are similar age, a tandem stroller could be the best choice for your family. The seats of these models are placed together, allowing you to interact with them both and keep an eye on them at the same time. They also recline separately which means that one child can rest while the other is ready to go.
The disadvantage of a twin stroller may be that it's wider than one designed for a single person. This could make it difficult to maneuver narrow aisles for stores, doors or even walkways. For some families, the benefits are worth the extra effort and size.
If you're in the market for a compact double stroller the UPPAbaby Vista V2 Double is a fantastic choice. Its shock absorbers, streamlined design and capacity for two infant car seats--plus an optional running board for mobile older children make it a perfect choice for city living.
Another alternative is a wagon-style double stroller, such as the Delta Children LX Side-by-Side Stroller. This model is bare-bones and offers lots of space for seating and storage space, along with robust wheels that can handle any terrain. It also comes with an umbrella with 50+ SPF and adjustable handlebars. But some parents say the seats are too low and don't recline completely to a flat position, which makes it difficult for children of smaller sizes to sit comfortably or reach their snack trays.
Easy of Use
Double strollers are typically a large investment that you will be using for a long time. When choosing a stroller you need to make sure it will be easy to use and clean. Fortunately, the best double strollers are designed to be as user-friendly as possible and come with plenty of features that are convenient for parents.
To start, all the strollers we tested folded easily and compactly (with only one hand!). They are also light and perfect for travel. Many of them can be checked for gate entry on airplanes and fit into most trunks. Our testers found that their strollers could fold down much smaller than the single seat equivalents. Some even came with a carrying strap.
The Valco Snap Duo trend is a double stroller that has many options that can grow with your family. This side-by-side stroller can be used with infant car seats, bassinets, and other accessories, so you can use it from birth to the age of preschool. Each seat is equipped with a five-point harness and a large canopy that gives ample shade from the sun.
The Joovy Twin Roo is another option that is highly praised. This stroller is lightweight and extremely compact, measuring just 22 pounds and 26 inches wide when folded. The front seat reclines to nearly the full flat position and the back seat has an adjustable recline for every child. There's a large storage bin and an easy, one-step linked parking brake that makes this stroller extremely easy to maneuver and use.
The only drawbacks to the Joovy Twin Roo were minor and specific to the model in question. Kerry states that the packaging was enjoyable and innovative, but it came in five boxes, which can be a bit of trouble to carry around. She also found that the Genuis magnetic buckle was difficult to master. She was happy with the stroller in the end and would recommend it.
Stores
Strollers are available in a variety of sizes and styles that include tandems (single-file seating) as well as side-by-side doubles and many that let you modify the layout using a car seat or bassinet attachment. Some come with rider boards that can be added to accommodate older siblings. However, not all of them are made equal. Some are elegant and simple to use, while others are heavy, bulky and difficult to fold or store.
If you are looking for a lightweight stroller that can accommodate two children and two children, the Joovy Caboose Graphite is a great option. It was the lightest stroller we tested in our tests, weighing just under 23 lbs. It folds easily and comes with all the features parents need to enjoy a day out with two children.
The Vista v2 Double from UPPAbaby is a different model that our testers adored, especially for its sleek design and user-friendly. double buggy can accommodate two infant car seats or a toddler's seat and a bassinet without adapters. The rear seat can be removed to make it into a triple or quad stroller. It has a huge storage basket that can be upgraded to include an organizer for parents with wheels for all-terrain and side storage bags.
Billingsley states that the best double stroller for a toddler is one that has different options for customization, including the ability to remove a seat or a bassinet. Toddlers are often restricted in their endurance, so a stroller that has a bassinet attached will provide a safe place for them to nap. She says a double stroller should also come with a sturdy harness system and recline positions, and plenty of storage room for toys and snacks.
The ZOE Twin+ is popular among parents due to its light weight and flexibility. It's gate-check-friendly for airlines and fits through most doors (without removing the front wheels), and can expand into a quad or triple stroller with an added tandem seat. Its nearly-flat, independently reclining seats, sun canopy with extra-long lengths and adjustable footrests are additional highlights, while its large underseat storage basket and inclusion of parent and kid cup holders complete the impressive feature set. One downside according to Taylor the manufacturer, is that it lacks a the smallest profile when folded and can be difficult to carry.
