Buying a Tandem Double Buggy
A tandem double buggy could be a fantastic option if you have twins, or children who are very close in age. They are narrower than side-by-side buggies and are great for small spaces such as doors, public transport and terrain that is rocky.
Many also convert into travel systems that include two carrycots or car seats. However, they can be heavier and longer than single pushchairs, and may feel less stable in bumping up the kerbs.
Convertible
If you're looking for convertible single-to-double stroller or want to add an additional seat to an existing one, there's a variety of options available. The UPPAbaby V2 is a spacious, gorgeous stroller. It can easily be transformed from a single stroller to a dual by adding a rumble seat. However, it's pricey and less mobile than other double strollers because the 2nd seat is placed in front of the front seat. The Nuna Demi Grow is a similar model with a wide range of seating options, but lacks under-seat storage when used in doubles mode.
Other alternatives include twin buggies with all-terrain wheels, and joggers with fixed wheels that can accommodate two kids. They tend to be more expensive but they're designed for long-distance trips over rough terrain and could have more resale value.
Reclining the seat independently
If you are looking for a double stroller that can accommodate children of various age groups, you'll need one with an independent recliner for both seats. This allows your older child to be able to relax while your baby is sleeping in a bassinet and vice versa.
You'll also have to think about the size of the stroller as this will impact the ease of traverse doors and public transport. If you have very narrow doorways then it might be worthwhile to consider a side-by-side pushchair, such as the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the advantage of having a footprint similar to a single buggy however, it is able to accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies are generally a little longer than side-by-side models, and aren't as easy to manoeuvre up and down kerbs, however, they can accommodate a wider variety of car seat/car seat combinations, making them a good option for twins or siblings of various ages. They are also more expensive than single-to double buggies, but are worth the investment if you intend to keep it for years and will retain a decent amount of resale value should you sell it on when your children are out of it.
Another crucial thing to look out for is if the seat backs are able to recline independently of one another as this will let you put your child in the most optimal position for naps or watching. This is particularly important if you have a child younger than in the rear seat, who will prefer to lay back and sleep while the older child wants to sit up and observe their surroundings.
Certain brands come with a unique design for their seats that allows the back seat to completely recline into an almost flat position, which is ideal for infants. For example, the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating that can recline both the included toddler seat and the add-on RumbleSeat to multiple positions, to give your kids a the option of where they want they will sit, as well as providing an excellent UPF 50+ canopy with peekaboo windows.
Larger than twin buggies
They are great for siblings with different ages, and you can move around without having to worry about your children touching. They're usually a larger, with one seat behind the other. The seats can be reclined fully for infants, or put in an upright position for toddlers.
A popular option is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which is the tiniest side-by-side model available and features an identical footprint to one buggy. It features an adjustable handle that makes it easier for parents to push, and a handbrake that is helpful on steep hills. It is suitable for use from birth, and can be used with a range of car seats and carrycots.
Another alternative is the iCandy Wave, which has a simple one-click to fold and can be utilized in a duo or mono mode. The frame's clever design can be expanded widthwise to accommodate a second seat and it can be used with up to two carrycots or car seats so it's an excellent option for older siblings who wish to sit together and share the view. It's a bit longer than other models, but it feels light and has soft suspension for kerbs.
There are also plenty of 3-wheeler inline tandems that are available - check out Phil and Teds inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies, for example they provide stability and swift steering. Often these can be folded into the size of one buggy which is useful if you struggle with storage at home or need to transport it into and out of the car when you travel on public transportation.
It's important to remember that a wide double buggy will be heavier and bulkier than a smaller single buggy So make sure you're getting what you need before you buy. You'll need to take it off and on subways, trains and buses frequently, so it must be easy to use and manage. You might also have to juggle it on and off the car seat when you take your children to nursery or school so you'll need to be aware it can be easily manoeuvred in tight spaces.
From birth, you're a good candidate
There will be a need for a pushchair for the whole family, whether you're expecting twins, or you have a second child after you've had your first. Double buggies are typically heavier and bulkier as well as more expensive than single strollers. However, they are more maneuverable in narrower doors and around obstacles such as curbs. Many double buggies are compatible with piggyback boards (available from the manufacturer or as an add-on). This allows you to carry three children at once.
Get the facts place one child in front the other. They're a good option if your children are close in age and are good friends. However, they're not 100% secure: Siblings in side-by-side seats can kick or punch each other, and children who are different heights can argue over who should sit higher. A tandem high-low model can solve this issue by elevating the seat towards the rear, which will prevent your child's height from sitting on the bottom and not getting the best view.
The iCandy Wave is a good alternative for parents looking for a convertible double buggy with a carrycot that can fit both a newborn and an older child. It features an intelligent frame that increases in size when you add the second child seat. It can also fold flat to make it a compact storage. The padded seats are comfortable, the straps are simple to fasten, and the buckles some of the most comfortable we've seen on any of our tests. Both seats can recline independently and the canopy is spacious and large with UPF 50+ protection as well as windows that peek out.
The only drawback to the iCandy tandem is that it's a bit costly. But a high-quality tandem will last for many years and have an attractive resale value so at the end of the day, you'll likely recoup a portion of the cost. The iCandy doesn't have the same seating arrangements as our other top selections. However, it's a good option for families who don't want to spend much money.
