Can Double Buggy From Birth Ever Be The King Of The World?
Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

There are plenty of factors to consider when selecting the perfect double buggy from the time of birth. We spoke to Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options, age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

A must-have for active families This buggy can grow with your family from twins through to toddlers. It's lightweight with great manoeuvrability and is able to tackle uneven terrain with ease.

What kind of buggy do you prefer?

A double buggy is great for transporting two children, not necessarily of the same age, side-by-side. They can also serve as prams. Each seat has a reclining mechanism so that your children can lie down or sit in different positions. A lot of them have plenty of storage space for everything from snacks and drinks to wipes and nappies. Often they're lightweight, fold easily and are small enough to fit into your car boot. If you drive a great amount, you should make sure that the buggy be easily moved by folding the wheels into your car boot and removed.

The most well-known type of double buggy is the side by side, which you've probably seen on other mothers' pushchairs or even rode in as a child yourself. They're great for twins or older siblings who want to keep pace with you. They also come in a variety of seating configurations and styles, including 'cinema chairs'. They are usually simple to navigate, and if you select a model that has a soft suspension, they will easily navigate kerbs.

Tandem buggies are another popular choice as they're typically easier to turn than a side-by-side. The second seat is located behind the first rather than on the top. The seats are generally bigger and bulkier than a traditional side by side however, so make sure whether they can fit through doors or on public transport. They can be used to transport twins, a baby and toddler or three kids with the addition of a buggy.

Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They are more expensive than tandem buggies or side-by-side buggies, but they offer plenty of flexibility and come with a premium resale price. They are easy to steer and feature a large storage basket. They are also able to handle uneven surfaces. Some come with a built-in ride-on board for older children and 'cinema seats'.

Do you have twins?

Get the facts are the ideal method to transport your children, regardless of whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two primary types of double buggy: side-by-side buggies where your children are seated together or tandem buggies where one child is higher than the other. Both can accommodate two fixed seats, but side-byside buggies are typically narrower in width for getting through doors. Tandems are typically more spacious overall. They can also be able to accommodate a toddler seat and a carrycot.

Do you have one?

At beginning the idea of having a younger sibling could seem like a lot of responsibility, particularly if you're also taking care of the baby. A double buggy may allow them to feel a sense of belonging if you put them in an infant carrier and push the older child. It will also help your child get into their new role as a 'big brother or sister'.

Double buggies that are side-by-side are often considered to be the best choice for twins because they allow both children to enjoy the same view, however they can be hefty and heavy. We like the sleek B-AGILE DOUBLE from Leclerc that features an innovative frame that expands the width to accommodate two seats fixed. It also offers various configuration options, including using the second seat as baby carrier or a bassinet.

Alternatively, we recommend the Mountain Buggy Double Trailblazer for families who love to explore. This nifty buggy is a single-pushchair which can be made double by adding a second seat or carrycot (depending on the model). Its super-smooth ride is ideal for rough terrain and it comes with a variety of thoughtful features to keep everyone happy.

Do you need a travel system?

Double buggies are excellent to transport your children around in comfort but they're not essential for every family. You may be able use one stroller, and some attachments such as baby straps and toddler carriers that permit your child and you to travel on their backs or in the front.

If you choose to purchase a double buggy, there are three types to choose from: side by side as well as convertible. Side-by-side buggies have two seats positioned next to each other, which means your children will be able to see each one another. However, these are typically larger than a single pushchair and can be tricky to maneuver around kerbs. Tandem buggies provide an alternative that is smaller, with a single seat in the front and another in the rear, but they can be still quite long and heavy to push.

Convertible double buggies allow you to convert a single stroller into a double buggy by attaching the bassinet or infant car seat to the frame. You can leave your baby in the car seat until is ready to step up into the buggy seat. The UPPababy V2 is a great illustration - it could be used for twins as well as a toddler and an infant, or even three children with the optional PiggyBack Board.

If your children have grown older and have more endurance, a double-buggy can also be used to accompany them on bike rides or other day excursions where they prefer to walk. But, it's important to remember that they might not always prefer to ride in a buggy and could easily become disgruntled and tired on longer outings.

Before you invest in a double stroller, take into consideration the factors mentioned above and your family's unique situation. Having a sturdy and reliable double stroller can make life much easier especially if you need to navigate through busy streets or bustling shopping centres.
