Under hypoosmotic stress, the functions of the gut-brain axis are altered via impairment of intestinal barrier integrity, by disturbance of gut-brain neurotransmission, and through tissue-damaging inflammatory reactions. Our work identified candidate genes which showed significantly differential expression in the gut-brain axis when yellowfin seabream encountered hypoosmotic stress, which could shed lights on the understanding of the potential osmotic regulation mechanisms of the gut-brain axis in teleost.The amazon fishes' responses to hypoxia seem to be related to the Amazon basin diversity of aquatic environments, which present drastic daily and seasonal variations in the dissolved oxygen concentration. Among these fishes' adaptation to hypoxia, behavioral, metabolic, physiological, and biochemical responses are well known for some species. In this work, we aimed to identify how two different aquatic environments, normoxic forest streams and hypoxic lakes, dictate the responses to hypoxia for two cichlid species, Mesonauta festivus and Aequidens pallidus. In our results, we found that A. pallidus is less tolerant to hypoxia, which seems to be related to this animal's natural normoxic environment. Even though this species modulated the mitochondrial respiration in order to improve the oxygen use, it also showed a lower decrease in metabolic rate when exposed to hypoxia and no activation of the anaerobic metabolism. Instead, M. festivus showed a higher decrease in metabolic rate and an activation of the anaerobic metabolism. Our data reveal that the natural dissolved oxygen influences the hypoxia tolerance and the species' tolerance is related to its ability to perform metabolic depression. The interest results are the absence of mitochondrial respiration influences in these processes. The results observed with A. pallidus bring to light also the importance of preserving the forests, in which streams hold very specialized species acclimated to normoxia and lower temperature. The importance of hypoxia tolerance is, thus, important to keep fish assemblage and is thought to be a strong driver of fish biodiversity.The present study aimed to investigate the mechanism(s) through which endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-induced apoptosis, in the role of periodontitis, affects vascular calcification. Rat models of periodontitis, vascular calcification, periodontitis-vascular calcification, and a normal group were established. Cardiovascular tissues were obtained, and hematoxylin-eosin staining was applied to demonstrate the morphological changes in vascular tissues. Immunohistochemical staining was applied to analyze apoptosis in cardiovascular tissues. The expression levels of apoptotic factor cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase 3 (Caspase-3), ERS-induced apoptotic factors glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), 94 (GRP94), and ERS-induced apoptosis pathways Caspase-12, C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) were analyzed and compared. Hematoxylin-eosin staining revealed that the arterial layers in the normal group were structurally intact. The structural damage to the aortic wall gradually aggravated from the periodontitis group to the vascular calcification group to the combined group. The immunohistochemistry results showed Caspase-3, GRP78, GRP94, and ERS-induced apoptosis pathways in the cardiovascular tissues cells in the periodontitis group, vascular calcification group, and combined group. The Caspase-3, GRP78, GRP94, and CHOP expression levels in the combined group were significantly higher than that in the normal group (P 0.05). Apoptosis induced by ERS is involved in the effect of periodontitis on vascular calcification and might be mainly achieved through the activation of the CHOP transcription pathway.Garcinia mangostana L. (mangosteen) is a tropical fruit that has been used for medicinal purposes in Southeast Asia for centuries. With an interest in its applications to treat infection, we sought to investigate the bioactive constituents of mangosteen and identified the phenolic compound procyanidin B2 from the mangosteen pericarp by examining lipopolysaccharide (LPS) binding capacity. The LPS binding and neutralization activities of procyanidin B2 were determined by a combination of biophysical and in silico techniques. The affinity of procyanidin B2 to LPS was 1.61 × 10-5 M. Procyanidin B2 significantly neutralized LPS and selectively inhibited the LPS-induced release of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α from RAW264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Binding thermodynamics revealed favorable hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions between procyanidin B2 and LPS. Molecular simulations suggested that hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions were involved in the binding process. These findings have, for the first time, shed light on the anti-inflammatory properties of procyanidin B2 through LPS binding and neutralization and provided a promising lead for the development of antiendotoxin agents.Mechanical fall is common among elders and has been associated with a lack of anticoagulant therapy among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, anticoagulant therapy is recommended despite frequent fall due to an increased risk of a thromboembolic event. Using data from a large health system, we investigated the predictors of anticoagulation prescription on discharge in AF elderly patients after an in-hospital fall. In this retrospective analysis, we examined patients aged 60 years and older discharged from 2013 to 2018 with a diagnosis of AF and a secondary diagnosis of in-hospital fall. The primary outcome was the prescription of anticoagulation at discharge. We obtained patients' demographical (race, sex, and health insurance status) and clinical (management by a resident team, receipt of a head CT or a cardiology consultation, ambulation status and discharge location) data. We further categorized the type of anticoagulation prescribed as warfarin or novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs). We ran chiThese results suggest that provider's decisions on anticoagulation initiation seem to be guided more by their concerns over bleeding complications than by the patient's risk for stroke. However, anchoring bias strongly influences anticoagulation prescription. It may benefit AF patients already on anticoagulation, but it may prevent anticoagulation prescription in patients with new AF and Asian patients.
The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of social determinants on changes in dietary habits before and after diagnosis of breast cancer in women (Barcelona, 2003-2013).
We performed a cohort study with 2,235 women diagnosed with breast cancer. The information was obtained from an ad hoc questionnaire based on recommendations from the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition. We conducted a descriptive bivariate analysis and fit logistic regression models. The dependent variable was the change in dietary habits (food groups) and the independent variables were a selection of social and clinical variables (age, social class, cohabitation, years since diagnosis, history of replaces, and treatment with chemotherapy).
While 5.8% of women followed a healthy diet (consumption of vegetables, fruits, farinaceous, lean meat, and seafood) before diagnosis, 9.5% did so after diagnosis. see more We observed statistically significant changes in consumption of all food groups (p < 0.001) after diagnosis. The greatest change in consumption patterns was observed in women aged < 50years and those from non-manual classes (high classes) [e.g., legume consumption OR
= 2.9 (95% CI 1.78-4.81); OR
= 2.5 (95% CI 1.38-4.36)]. The occurrence of relapses and chemotherapy was associated with greater changes in dietary habits.

To describe the innovative intraoperative technologies emerging to aid surgeons during minimally invasive robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy.
We searched multiple electronic databases reporting on intraoperative imaging and navigation technologies, robotic surgery in combination with 3D modeling and 3D printing used during laparoscopic or robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. Additional searches were conducted for articles that considered the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning and their application to robotic surgery. We excluded studies using intraoperative navigation technologies during open radical prostatectomy and studies considering technology to visualize lymph nodes. Intraoperative imaging using either transrectal ultrasonography or augmented reality was associated with a potential decrease in positive surgical margins rates. Improvements in detecting capsular involvement may be seen with augmented reality. The benefit, feasibility and applications of other imagints remain and there is a paucity in the literature supporting the use of these technologies. Urologic surgeons are encouraged to improve and test these advanced technologies in the clinical arena, preferably with comparative, randomized, trials.Mucins are the major proteins that distributed on the intestinal mucosa layer and protect the intestine from pathogens infection. The composition of intestinal mucin O-glycans can affect the health of the gastrointestinal tract in pigs. Porcine intestinal mucosa is widely used as the main raw material of heparin extraction. The heparin extraction residues rich in mucins were usually wasted. The structure of mucin derived O-glycans in porcine intestinal mucosa are currently unknown. In this study, we isolated the mucins from the heparin extraction residues and profiled the O-glycans. After heparin extraction, mucin was digested with trypsin, and separated by strong anion exchange chromatography. The mucin derived O-glycans were release by alkaline β elimination, and analyzed by ultra high performance liquid chromatography-porous graphitized carbon-Fourier transform mass spectrometry (UPLC-PGC-FTMS/MS). Thirty five kinds of O-glycans were identified, most of which were Core 3-derived glycans. In particular, the O-glycans containing sialic acid Neu5Ac accounted for 71.93% of the total O-glycans, which were different from that of other species, including mouse intestine, fish intestine, and porcine colon. The high content sialylated mucin may explain its effect in biological processes. Furthermore, the immunological activity results indicated that the porcine intestinal mucin could promote phagocytosis and proliferation without any cytotoxic effects, which may aid in the development of immunomodulators.
Anastomotic leak following elective sigmoidectomy performed due to sigmoid volvulus (SV) is a devastating complication. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence and risk factors associated with leak in this specific group of patients.
A retrospective study was performed at two university-affiliated tertiary centres in Israel. All consecutive patients between January 2014 and April 2020 treated for SV with elective sigmoidectomy and primary anastomosis were reviewed and those suffering from anastomotic leak identified. Factors associated with this complication were assessed using univariate analysis and odds ratios subsequently calculated.
Of the 99 patients initially identified, 58 were included in the study group [45 males and 13 females (77.6% versus 22.4% respectively) mean age 67.4years, range 13-97]. There were 10 anastomotic leaks identified (17.2%). On univariate analysis recurrent decompression (OR 8.28, p = 0.027), age > 80-years (OR 6.88, p = 0.027), open rather than laparoscopic surgery (OR = 5.
