Little is known about differences in bystander behavior among people who use drugs, trained and untrained in opioid overdose prevention. We examined three types of recommended overdose response - a 911 call, rescue breathing/CPR, and naloxone administration-among Philadelphia-based, predominantly street-involved women with a history of illicit drug use. The study utilized a convergent mixed methods approach integrating data from 186 quantitative survey responses and 38 semi-structured qualitative interviews. Quantitative findings revealed that compared to untrained women, trained women were more likely to administer naloxone (32.9% vs. 5.2%) and use two recommended responses (20.0% vs. 9.5%). No significant differences were found between the two groups in calling 911 or using rescue breathing/CPR. Qualitative findings indicated that barriers to enacting recommended overdose response were either structural or situational and included the avoidance of police, inability to carry naloxone or phone due to unstable housing, and perceived lack of safety on the streets and when interacting with strangers. Our study demonstrated that overdose training improved the frequency of naloxone administration among this sample of predominantly street-involved women. Future efforts need to focus on avoiding intrusive policing, scaling-up naloxone refill sites, and providing secondary naloxone distribution via drug user networks.The paper examines whether diabetes mellitus leads to incident mild cognitive impairment and dementia through brain hypoperfusion and white matter disease. We performed inverse odds ratio weighted causal mediation analyses to decompose the effect of diabetes on cognitive impairment into direct and indirect effects, and we found that approximately a third of the total effect of diabetes is mediated through vascular-related brain pathology. Our findings lend support for a common aetiological hypothesis regarding incident cognitive impairment, which is that diabetes increases the risk of clinical cognitive impairment in part by impacting the vasculature of the brain.Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects the liver, causing cirrhosis and cancer. In developed countries, five international guidelines have been used to make a decision for the management of patients with chronic HBV infection. In this review, since the guidelines were established by clinical and epidemiological data of developed countries, we aimed to evaluate whether (1) HBV patient profiles of developing countries are similar to developed countries, and (2) which guideline can be applicable to resource-limited developing countries. First, as an example of the most recent data of HBV infections among developing countries, we evaluated the national HBV viral load study in Nepal, which were compared with the data from other developing countries. In Nepal, the highest number of patients had viral loads of 20-2000 IU/mL (36.7%) and belonged to the age group of 21-30 years; HBV epidemiology in Nepal, based on the viral loads, gender, and age groups was similar to those of not only other developing countries but also developed countries. Next, we reviewed five international HBV treatment guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), and Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL). Therefore, in resource-limited developing countries like Nepal, we recommend the WHO guideline for HBV treatment based on the viral load, ALT, and APRI information.In this work, a novel light activatable micron-sized liposomal drug carrier that has a unique capability to release drug repetitively in proportion to the cycle number of short irradiation (5 s) of near-infrared (NIR) pulsed laser is reported. We synthesized methotrexate (MTX)-loaded liposomes based on a modified reverse-phase evaporation method. Gold nanorods (AuNR) were attached to the liposomal surfaces, enabling the liposomes to release drug under short NIR irradiation via the photothermal effect. The concentrations of methotrexate (MTX) released from the liposomes were 10.6, 29.8, 43.7 and 65.9 μg/mL after one, two, three or four NIR laser cycles (1.1 W at 1064 nm, 5 s per cycle), respectively. The current finding will provide possible solution to the previously reported inconsistency in drug release from light activatable liposomal drug carriers at each activation cycle. The repeatability of drug release described in this work is believed to be due to reversible nature of the liposomes. The liposomes release drug via lipid bilayer melting when irradiated by laser due to gold nanorods' plasmonic heat on the lipid bilayer surface and quickly regain their original structure once the laser source is removed. We provided evidence of the reversible liposomal structures by monitoring the change of number densities of liposomes using a microelectrode sensor with different laser irradiation durations and powers. We also assessed the micron-sized liposome with respect to long-term stability, drug encapsulation efficiency, and drug-releasing efficiency, demonstrating the possibility of utilizing these liposomes as long-term drug delivery vehicles for various drugs.Solid-state nanopores are rapidly emerging as promising platforms for developing various single molecule sensing applications. The modulation of ionic current through the pore due to translocation of the target molecule has been the dominant measurement modality in nanopore sensors. Here, we focus on the dwell time, which is the duration taken by the target molecule or particle to traverse the pore and study its dependence on the strength of interaction of the target with the pore using single gold nanoparticles (NPs) as targets interacting with a silicon nitride (SiN) nanopore. The strength of interaction, which in our case is electrostatic in nature, can be controlled by coating the nanoparticles with charged polymers. We report on an operating regime of this nanopore sensor, characterized by attractive interactions between the nanoparticle and the pore, where the dwell time is exponentially sensitive to the target-pore interaction. We used negatively and positively charged gold nanoparticles to control the strength of their interaction with the Silicon Nitride pore which is negatively charged. Our experiments revealed how this modulation of the electrostatic force greatly affects the dwell time. Positively charged NPs with strong attractive interactions with the pore resulted in increase of dwell times by 2-3 orders of magnitude, from 0.4 ms to 75.3 ms. This extreme sensitivity of the dwell time on the strength of interaction between a target and nanopore can be exploited in emerging nanopore sensor applications.Factor models are a class of powerful statistical models that have been widely used to deal with dependent measurements that arise frequently from various applications from genomics and neuroscience to economics and finance. As data are collected at an ever-growing scale, statistical machine learning faces some new challenges high dimensionality, strong dependence among observed variables, heavy-tailed variables and heterogeneity. High-dimensional robust factor analysis serves as a powerful toolkit to conquer these challenges. This paper gives a selective overview on recent advance on high-dimensional factor models and their applications to statistics including Factor-Adjusted Robust Model selection (FarmSelect) and Factor-Adjusted Robust Multiple testing (FarmTest). We show that classical methods, especially principal component analysis (PCA), can be tailored to many new problems and provide powerful tools for statistical estimation and inference. We highlight PCA and its connections to matrix perturbation theory, robust statistics, random projection, false discovery rate, etc., and illustrate through several applications how insights from these fields yield solutions to modern challenges. We also present far-reaching connections between factor models and popular statistical learning problems, including network analysis and low-rank matrix recovery.Building materials that are found in the indoor environment can play an important role in determining indoor air quality. Previous studies have recognized that building materials are potential sinks/sources of indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but their uptake under extremely low concentrations has not been extensively studied. This study has characterized the capacities of various building materials for adsorption of trichloroethylene (TCE), which is a contaminant of significant concern in vapor intrusion scenarios. The capacities of more than 20 building materials were established at a TCE concentration of 1.12 ppbv (and for selected materials at concentrations up to 12.5 ppbv). This was achieved using a thermal desorption method. Room temperature isotherms for glass wool, polyethylene, nylon carpet, drywall, printer paper, leather, and cinderblock were measured. The results showed that the sorptive capacities of the building materials were at nanograms per gram levels; cinderblock had the largest sorption capacity among all the building materials tested and this is believed to indicate that solid carbon content of materials plays a significant role during the sorption process. TCE desorption from selected building materials was also investigated at room temperature and 100°C.Simple Ti amide complexes are shown to act as sources for masked TiII intermediates via several pathways, as demonstrated through the investigation of a unique Ti-catalyzed nitrene-coupled transfer hydrogenation of 3-hexyne. Participants provided information on demographics, personality traits, impulsivity characteristics, lifetime use of cigarettes and electronic cigarettes (ECIGs), and current use of cigarettes, ECIGs, small cigars/cigarillos, large cigars, smokeless tobacco, and waterpipe. Latent class analysis identified tobacco-use classes and regressions identified psychological predictors of class membership. Participants were Nonusers, Experimenters, and Polytobacco Users. Lower agreeableness and conscientiousness as well as higher extraversion and neuroticism were associated with being Experimenters or Polytobacco Users. Lower impulsivity was associated with being Nonusers.
