least to most descriptive:
1. molecular formula - least descriptive; only gives the # of atoms
2. condensed structure - single bonds are not shown; double bonds are shown
3. partially condensed - bonds btwn carbons & hydrogens skipped
4 lewis structure - very descriptive; shows all bonds btwn all atoms including lone pairs
5. bond-line structure (zigzag or skeletal)
steps to drawing bond-line structures:
1. each point in the zizag represents a carbon /w a corresponding # of hydrogens; hydrogens & hydrogens on carbons are not shown at all;
2. all heteroatoms are shown along with their hydrogens; heteroatoms are any atom other than carbon or hydrogen
2. keep bonds far apart (away form inside of the angle)
3. direction of single bonds is irrelevant as long as they have the same connectivity
4. double carbon bonds are drawn zigzag while triple bonds are drawn linear
