Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?
A light double pushchair makes it easy to get around, particularly when you have children of various age groups. They are easy to fold, steer and carry up and down the stairs.
This City Mini GT2 offers side-by-side seats with plenty of legroom and reclining that can be adjusted. It also has massive UPF 50+ canopy with windows that peek out. It also comes with an expanding frame size to accommodate an additional car seat or another passenger.
Side-by-Side
The majority of lightweight double pushchairs we test are side-byside models and they're generally best for children who can sit up on their own since these models tend to lack car seat integration. That said, the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both great options that provide recline that can be adjusted in both seats, a wide canopy, and padded 5-point harnesses. These are also easy to maneuver, despite their larger footprint. They are perfect for parents who worry about fitting through doors.
The Cybex Duet is a little different due to its clever frame that expands widthways to add another seat, which makes it lighter than most other side-by-side pushchairs on the market. It is able to pass through doors that are standard and is easy to maneuver on public transport. It also doubles as a jogger which is great when you are planning to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or carrier.
The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another fantastic side-by-side double that is lightweight. It allows for an even greater degree of customization due to a modular frame. It features a clever design that lets you convert it into a single buggy or a double by incorporating 2 carrycots or car seats (it can even accommodate twins). It's a fantastic and practical choice for growing families, and the UPPAbaby also is one of the lightest and stylish umbrella strollers on the market.
Try the egg2 which folds down to the size and weight of a tiny suitcase. It can be used either as a single or double by adding 2 carrycots or baby car seats. Our test subjects were awed by the ease of move around even with a load of children.
Double pushchairs with side-by-side seating aren't foolproof, though -- if your children are the same age or at the same stage, they might still argue over who rides in which seat. And if they're at different heights it could be that a tandem design might be more suitable for them since it will allow them to confront each other.
Tandem
While side-byside models might be better suited for siblings of the same age, tandem lightweight double pushchairs are a different kind of pushchair with their own appeal. They can take a bigger car seat, and some come with reversible seats or an extra carrycot that is located in the middle. They are generally more spacious and easier to access and exit from however their baskets are typically smaller than those on single buggies. They often have larger large canopies that have peekaboo windows, as well as one cup holder for the parent and padded leg cushions for little ones.
The iCandy Peach is another example of a good-value lightweight tandem. The fabric is a little less expensive than our other top-rated tandems, however, it still looks and feels great and is very user-friendly. Its one-handed folding is impressive. Even though it requires some practice, Kirstie from our Lab called it "genius". The carrycot can't be folded while it is attached. However, the mechanism to attach and remove the carrycot is simple and quick.
Tandem lightweight double strollers will typically have tighter turning capabilities than side-by-side models. However, they may be difficult to drive on uneven surfaces or curbs. They are also slower to accelerate and are heavier to move. This puts strain on your back.
A convertible double buggy is a different alternative. It's initially one however, you can add adapters to make it double. This can include a second seat or carrycot in front, or the children can sit side-by-side. Some of them also offer the option to add buggy boards, which could help older children keep up with a younger sibling.
The Uppababy Vista V2 is a excellent example of a convertible, as it can also convert into a twin pram through the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) that provide a flat space for newborns. They can be placed in a row or joined to face each other and you can also use them with the baby car seat that comes with the pushchair (as as long as you select the right one). As they're made with quality materials, these kinds of buggies that are dual-use can be used for many years without displaying much wear, meaning they have the highest price resales.
Single-to-Double
Designed for outdoor-loving families who are looking to upgrade from a single stroller, this light double buggy turns into a jogger with the help of an impressive kit that comes with air-filled tyres and all-wheel suspension. It's also a good choice for twins, or children from different age groups, and as triple tandem, it can take on rough terrain. It's a great option for parents who want a sleek style that's as elegant as a single. It comes in different fabric colours.
This iCandy model is easy to fold with a single-handed system. Although it's heavier than some of the other pushchairs that are single-to-double in this review, home tester Karolina said that it still is very maneuverable, even when she had two toddlers and a carrycot inside.
You can purchase add-ons like the Roma Gemini Carrycots (PS100) which are great for babies. Our panel of testers found that the seats to be comfortable for toddlers and had good lumbar support and headrests. There are a variety of options for reclining and recline, with the front seat being adjustable to different positions, and the rear seat having the option of recline.
This kind of buggy has the biggest disadvantage of being wider than doubles that are side-by-side. This makes it difficult to navigate through doorways and it can be difficult to get up and down kerbs. The wheels and suspension of these strollers tend to be able to deal with paved surfaces. They're also lighter than many side-by-sides and, therefore, you can have plenty of storage. It's important to remember that these strollers aren't as adept at navigating narrow aisles in supermarkets, and may struggle to handle a large amount of shopping. It's a little easier to turn around on the smallest of curved paths but it can be difficult to turn them around on a straight path. Some are also more easy to turn than others, with the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for example.
Convertible
The benefit of convertible double pushchairs is that they can adapt to changing family requirements. They often start out as single buggies, but come with adapters to add a second seat, carrycot or (in certain cases) a car seat to the frame. Some are able to be converted to a single one when your child's older age begins to walk or wants to ride a buggyboard.
One of the lightest double strollers on our list, this fashionable tri-fold model is able to hold children up to 40 lbs each. It also has a convenient basket that can be placed between the seats for storage. The spacious canopy with peekaboo window, multi-position reclining chairs as well as front and back suspension for smoother and more comfortable riding on rough terrain were well-loved by the home testers. It also has a handy cup holder for the parent and a large, easy-to access basket. However, they noticed that the backs of the seats have tiny pockets that aren't large enough to accommodate anything more than a phone and keys.
This high-end, lightweight side-by-side is available in more than 20 configurations. It also comes with a second chair and carrycot. Its impressive features include an ergonomic handlebar with a high profile for better steering and a rear and front suspension to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing compact fold with handy straps for easy schlepping; and seven-inch wheel lock that swivels in the front and back wheels that measure 10 inches with suspension for a smoother ride. The only drawback is that you'll need to buy a separate baby carrier or car seat.
This multi-functional tandem is the top pick of our home testers because it is easy to maneuver and has a large basket for shopping that can be accessed from both seats when in the parent-facing position. It is simple to maneuver thanks to its surprisingly low weight (about the weight of a few single pushchairs). Many users praise the clever method of attaching the second seat or riding board to the back. Parents also appreciated the fact that it could accommodate infant car seats and carriers from various brands, including those that aren't typically fit in other double buggies.
