Enhancing Near-Room-Temperature GeTe Thermoelectrics through In/Pb Co-doping.
A water-soluble polysaccharide from the green alga Chaetomorpha linum, designated CHS2, was obtained by water extraction, preparative anion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. Results of chemical and spectroscopic analyses showed that CHS2 was a sulfated rhamnogalactoarabinan, and its backbone was mainly constituted by 4-linked and 3,4-linked β-l-arabinopyranose with sulfate groups at C-2/C-3 of 4-linked β-l-arabinopyranose. The branching contained 4-linked, 6-linked β-d-galactopyranose and terminal rhamnose residues. Based on the inhibition of human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) aggregation and morphology change of hIAPP aggregates in in vitro tests, it was proved that CHS2 effectively inhibited the hIAPP aggregation and possessed strong antidiabetic activity. CHS2 was nearly no toxicity in NIT-1 cells and could attenuate hIAPP-induced cytotoxicity. CHS2 may significantly reduce the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species and hIAPP aggregation-induced oxidative stress in NIT-1 cells. CHS2 was co-localized with mitochondria, and largely protected mitochondria function from hIAPP aggregation-induced damage through stabilizing mitochondrial membrane potential and enhancing the mitochondrial complex I, II or III activity and ATP level. The data demonstrated that CHS2 could have potential prospect to become an antidiabetic drug for type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment.As an important elicitor, chitosan could activate the synthesis of lignin in many plants. However, no report is available on whether preharvest chitosan sprays affects the synthesis and deposition of lignin at wounds of harvested muskmelons. In the present study, the plants and fruit of muskmelons were multiple sprayed with 0.1% chitosan during fruit development. Here, we found that chitosan sprays increased the activities of 4-coumaric acid-coenzyme A ligase, cinnamyl-CoA reductase and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, and elevated the levels of p-coumaryl alcohol, coniferyl alcohol, sinapyl alcohol and lignin at wounds. Chitosan sprays enhanced H2O2 level and peroxidase activity, and accelerated the deposition of lignin at wounds. Moreover, chitosan sprays resulted in a higher hardness and lower resilience, springiness and cohesiveness of the healing tissues. Taken together, preharvest chitosan sprays accelerated the deposition of lignin at wounds of muskmelons by activating lignin metabolism, and increasing H2O2 content and peroxidase activity.This study evaluated quality attributes and in vivo antioxidant activity of Auricularia cornea var. Li polysaccharide (ACP)-fortified set yogurt during 21 days of storage (4 °C). Set yogurt was manufactured using a commercial yogurt culture, and 3% (w/v) ACP was added. Physicochemical (pH, titratable acidity, and water-holding capacity), textural, rheological, microstructural, flavor, and antioxidant properties of set yogurt were investigated. The results showed that the addition of ACP significantly enhanced WHC, viscosity, firmness, and cohesiveness, while inhibiting post-acidification of set yogurt during storage. The yogurt supplemented with ACP showed a larger hysteresis area and higher G' and G″ values, formed a porous, dense, mesh-like structure and exhibited a unique mushroom flavor. Antioxidant results showed that administration of ACP-fortified yogurt significantly decreased serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase enzyme activities and malondialdehyde levels, while increasing superoxide dismutase, catalase, phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase, and total antioxidant capacity in the liver and hippocampus of the mice. ACP-fortified yogurt might alleviate hepatic damage and hippocampal neuroinflammation induced by d-galactose. Additionally, ACP-fortified yogurt downregulated the expression of Keap1 and upregulated the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 in the liver. In conclusion, ACP may be used as an ingredient to produce yogurt with desired properties.This study aimed to analyze the dietary patterns of adolescent students during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Pregnant rats received vitamin D (VitD, 500 IU/day) or vehicle (CTL) during gestation. Other pregnant rats received dexamethasone (Dex 0.1 mg/kg/ - 14th to the 19th gestational day) or dexamethasone + vitamin D (DexVitD). The offspring were tested for anhedonia (sucrose preference) and depressive-like behavior (forced swimming test) at postnatal months (PNM) 3, 6 and 12. Components of the serotonergic system, as well as glucocorticoids' receptors, were evaluated in the dorsal raphe nucleus at PNM 6 and 12. Prenatal vitamin D and dexamethasone increased sucrose preference at PNM 12. Prenatal vitamin D had an antidepressant-like effect at PNM 3 in rats overexposed to dexamethasone. However, at PNM 12, this effect was blunted in the DexVitD group. Prenatal dexamethasone reduced the protein content of SERT, TPH, and 5-HT1A receptors in the dorsal raphe nucleus at 6 but not at 12 PNM. The glucocorticoids' receptors expression was similar in all groups. We concluded that prenatal overexposure to dexamethasone does not change emotional behaviors in females, but it blunts the antidepressant-like effect of gestational vitamin D in an age-dependent manner. The antidepressant-like activity of vitamin D in the offspring was not related either to alterations of the serotonergic system or the glucocorticoids' receptors expression in the dorsal raphe nucleus.

Narrative literature review.

The literature search was conducted in August 2021 using 4 electronic databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Population-based pharmacovigilance surveillance data were retrieved from all governmental agencies participating in the World Health Organization (WHO) Programme for International Drug Monitoring with publicly available online adverse event databases in English.

Observational retrospective database study.

First/last author's gender and country were assigned to 30 438 PubMed records (data derived from Q1-Q2 Ophthalmology journals for 2016-2020). Using mixed models, the influence of First Author Female (FAF) and Last Author Female (LAF) were evaluated on the manuscripts' review timeline. This analysis was performed globally and in predefined subgroups (English names, Asian names, specific topics). Additionally, the gender GAP was explored by country, journal, and research topics.

The percentages of FAF/LAF were unevenly distributed by country; in the top 30 ophthalmology journals, FAF accounted for 40.0%±6.7% of the publications whereas LAF accounted for 27.1%±4.9%. Overall, FAF/LAF papers underwent significantly longer times to be reviewed (up to +10 days) and accepted (+5 days). To evaluate the clinical results of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) without any intraoperative or postoperative posturing.

Retrospective, noncomparative, and interventional case series.

One hundred thirty-four (134) consecutive eyes of 101 patients requiring DMEK for any cause of endothelial failure were included. Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty was performed with an intraoperative inferior PI. After unscrolling and centration of the graft, the anterior chamber was near completely filled with 20% SF6. After filling the eye with gas there was no intraoperative tamponade time, and patients did not posture postoperatively. Main outcome measures were graft detachment rate, rebubbling rate, primary and secondary failure rates, rejection rate, intraoperative and postoperative complications, and visual acuity 3 and 12 months after surgery.

Five of 134 (3.7%) developed graft detachment greater than one-third of the graft area, and 19 of 134 (14.2%) developed graft detachment less than one-third of the graft area.
