Here are the directions for the media paper:

Select one of the following events. Write an essay of 1500 words analyzing the way the issue is understood and debated in media from the US and media from one Middle Eastern country (choices listed below).

The essay should be based on a survey of English language media (unless you have working knowledge of a Middle Eastern language).

You should survey at least 12 articles from at least four different sources for each country (for a total of 24 articles). These might be news articles (that are not based on wire services), editorials and op-eds, or news analyses. They may be from print, on-line, or broadcast sources (in the last case, they could be transcripts of such broadcasts if available). You should attach a bibliography of the articles you used.

You should focus on whether the (1) nature of the policy question; (2) relevant facts; (3) motivations of key actors; or (4) framing of the issue is systematically different between the two countries covered. You might also want to be alert to differences within the countries--whether there is consensus or not on how the issue is discussed within each country..

Your essay should have a clear argument and thesis stated at the outset. The lead paragraph should also explain and justify the organization of the essay. In other words, the reader should know by the end of the first paragraph what the argument is and how it is going to be demonstrated.

1. Iranian nuclear agreement (compare US media with those from Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Turkey).

2. Geneva negotiations about Syria (compare US media with those from Iran, Turkey, or Saudi Arabia).

3. The death of doctoral student Gulio Regeni.(compare US with Egypt)

4. The ratification of the Tunisian constitution (compare US with Tunisia)

5. The death of Syrian refugees in Turkey in September 2015 (compare US with Jordan, Israel, or Kuwait)

On March 21, our Middle East librarian, Amanda Steinberg will come by the class for a brief presentation on media resources.

The paper is due on April 13.
