FE-predicted femoral failure load obtained from MDCT scan data was not significantly affected by 50% dose reductions through sparse sampling. Further decrease in dose through sparse sampling (25% of original projections) and virtually reduced tube current (50% and 25% of the original dose) showed significant effects on the FE-predicted failure load results. PURPOSE To investigate the effect of virtually reduced tube current and sparse sampling on multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT)-based femoral bone strength prediction using finite element (FE) analysis. METHODS Routine MDCT data covering the proximal femur of 21 subjects (17 males; 4 females; mean age, 71.0 ± 8.8 years) without any bone diseases aside from osteoporosis were included in this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-seven postmenopausal women were enrolled who had MRI scanning with T1WI, T2WI, and T2* mapping sequences and QCT evaluation of BMD. The T2* value and the BMD were assessed in lumbar vertebral bodies 2-4. Based on the BMD values, the patients were divided into three groups normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis. The use of wide bandgap metal oxide semiconductor materials is of great interest in the development of UV photodetector due to their unique electronic and optical properties. In this work, deep UV photodetector based on NiO/β-Ga2O3 heterojunction was developed and investigated. The β-Ga2O3 layer was prepared by magnetron sputtering and exhibited selective orientation along the family of ([Formula see text] 01) crystal plane after annealing. The photodetector demonstrated good performance with a high responsivity (R) of 27.43 AW-1 under a 245-nm illumination (27 μWcm-2) and the maximum detectivity (D*) of 3.14 × 1012 cmHz1/2 W-1, which was attributed to the p-NiO/n-β-Ga2O3 heterojunction.A highly stable copper nanoclusters (CuNC) carrying 4-chlorothiophenol as a protective ligand is described. They display self-assembly-induced emission with excitation/emission maxima at 330/605 nm even in neutral or alkaline aqueous environment. The fluorescence of these CuNC is quenched by Hg(II). Quenching is mainly ascribed to the formation of a complex formed via Hg-S bonding between the Hg(II) ions and the ligand. This destroys the ordered architectures of the assembled CuNC. The assay enables Hg(II) to be determined with good sensitivity and a linear response ranging from 1 to 500 nM Hg(II) with a 0.3 nM limit of detection. In addition, the method was implemented in a test strip (which undergoes a color change from red to blue) that can be used for visual determination of Hg(II) in complex environmental water samples. Despite the significant impact of fragility fractures on patient morbidity and mortality, efforts in optimizing osteoporotic treatment and prevention remain inadequate. In contrast, in patients with limited life expectancy, withholding specific osteoporosis drug treatment appears reasonable. The threshold between under- and overtreatment is still unclear. METHODS In 2016, we implemented a fracture liaison service (FLS) for 18 months to improve the quality of osteoporosis care. We collected prospectively the patient's history, current treatment for osteoporosis, and risk factors for fragility fractures using a standardized protocol. Recommendations for drug therapy are discussed during the interdisciplinary ward round. The primary outcome parameter was a recommendation for specific osteoporosis drug treatment. We included 681 patients (mean age 82.5 years, 502 (73.7%) femd. Consequently, drugs that modulate cross-talk in the trigeminal ganglion can modulate both peripheral and central sensitization, which may potentially be distinct from sensitization mediated in the dorsal root ganglion.OBJECTIVES To identify the gene expression of the cytokines IL-9, TNF-α, IL-1, INF-γ, IL-17A, and IL-10 and the chemokines CCL-2/MCP-1 and CCR-6 in the periapical fluid of human root canal infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty samples were collected immediately and 7 days after the cleaning and shaping procedures (after reducing the intracanal microbial load) in an attempt to characterize the expression of these genes. The endogenous expression levels of cytokines and chemokines were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The Shapiro-Wilk and the Wilcoxon tests analyzed data. RESULTS Significantly higher levels of the IL-9, INF-γ, TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-10 markers on day 7 were observed compared with day 0 (p  0.05). CONCLUSIONS The clinical variation of the periapical immune status after endodontic therapy suggests that the cytokine and chemokine-mediated pro-inflammatory response appears to be modulated in an IL-10/IL-9-dependent manner. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Few studies have investigated the role of Th9 cells in periapical lesions. IL-9 presents exciting plasticity, performing immunosuppressive actions, and it is also capable of changing their phenotype in the presence of IL-17. Hence, it is relevant to investigate its role in the context of the known mediators involved the periapical immune process.Birnaviridae is a family of viruses (birnaviruses) which consists of four genera, members of which cause diseases in fish, birds, mollusks, and insects. The genome of birnaviruses encodes the highly immunogenic VP2 capsid protein. In order to demonstrate that the VP2 protein can be exploited as a diagnostic antigen for birnaviruses, we developed a lateral flow assay based on the surface-exposed VP2 protrusion domain of a representative birnavirus, infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) of serotype 1 which causes the highly devastating infectious bursal disease in chickens. The biophysical characterization of the purified domain reveals that the domain predominantly consists of β-sheets, exists in a trimeric form, and remains folded at high temperatures, making it suitable for diagnostic purposes. Owing to its highly immunogenic nature and excellent biophysical properties, we employed the VP2 protrusion domain in a gold nanoparticle-based lateral flow assay for rapid detection of anti-IBDV antibodies in serum samples of infected chickens. Our results indicate that the domain binds anti-IBDV antibodies with high specificity during laboratory testing and on-site testing. The lateral flow assay reported here yields comparable results in a qualitative manner as obtained through a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). As VP2 is a common capsid protein of birnaviruses, the lateral flow assay can be generalized for other birnaviruses, and members of Tetraviridae and Nodaviridae families which contain homologous VP2 capsid proteins.Although several bacterial lignin-oxidising enzymes have been discovered in recent years, it is not yet clear whether different lignin-degrading bacteria use similar mechanisms for lignin oxidation and degradation of lignin fragments. Genome sequences of 13 bacterial lignin-oxidising bacteria, including new genome sequences for Microbacterium phyllosphaerae and Agrobacterium sp., were analysed for the presence of lignin-oxidising enzymes and aromatic degradation gene clusters that could be used to metabolise the products of lignin degradation. Ten bacterial genomes contain DyP-type peroxidases, and ten bacterial strains contain putative multi-copper oxidases (MCOs), both known to have activity for lignin oxidation. Only one strain lacks both MCOs and DyP-type peroxidase genes. Eleven bacterial genomes contain aromatic degradation gene clusters, of which ten contain the central β-ketoadipate pathway, with variable numbers and types of degradation clusters for other aromatic substrates. Hence, there appear to be diverse metabolic strategies used for lignin oxidation in bacteria, while the β-ketoadipate pathway appears to be the most common route for aromatic metabolism in lignin-degrading bacteria.
