Hospitals can compare their present performance with their own performance in the past and with other hospitals. The performance feedback is provided to local quality improvement teams in each hospital, who define their own targets on specific indicators and develop performance improvement plans. The impact of the performance feedback and improvement plans will be evaluated by comparing the primary outcome before and after the intervention.

This study will provide evidence on the effectiveness of performance feedback to healthcare providers. The results will be actively disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, and various stakeholder engagement activities.

Addressing the global burden of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) requires identification of shorter, less toxic treatment regimens. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is currently conducting a phase II/III randomised controlled clinical trial, to find more effective, shorter and tolerable treatments for people with MDR-TB. Recruitment to the trial in Uzbekistan has been slower than expected; we aimed to study patient and health worker experiences of the trial, examining potential factors perceived to impede and facilitate trial recruitment, as well as general perceptions of clinical research in this context.

We conducted a qualitative study using maximum variation, purposive sampling of participants. We carried out in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) guided by semi-structured topic guides. In December 2019 and January 2020, 26 interviews were conducted with patients, Ministry of Health (MoH) and MSF staff and trial health workers, to explore challenges and barriers to patien insights developed together with patients and healthcare workers might inform approaches towards improved recruitment into trials, with the overall objective of delivering evidence for better treatments.

The suspected or actual effects on health of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) and their ubiquitous presence in everyday life justify the implementation of health promotion interventions. PREVED (Pregnancy, PreVention, Endocrine Disruptors) is an open-label randomized controlled trial assessing the impact of environmental health education intervention on EDC exposure during pregnancy. Although the combination of rehabilitation and nutrition may be important for the prevention of intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness, a protocolized intervention of this combination has not yet been reported. We herein developed an original combined protocol and evaluated its efficacy.

In this single-center historical control study, we enrolled adult patients admitted to the ICU. Patients in the control group received standard care, while those in the intervention group received the protocol-based intervention. The ICU mobility scale was used to set goals for early mobilization and a neuromuscular electrical stimulation was employed when patients were unable to stand. The nutritional status was assessed for nutritional therapy, and target calorie delivery was set at 20 or 30kcal/kg/day and target protein delivery at 1.8g/kg/day in the intervention group. The primary endpoint was a decrease in femoral muscle volume in 10days assessed by computed tomography.

Forty-five patients in the control group and 56 in the intervention group were included in the analysis. Femoral muscle volume loss was significantly lower in the intervention group (11.6 vs 14.5%, p = 0.03). The absolute risk difference was 2.9% (95% CI 0.1-5.6%). Early mobilization to a sitting position by day 10 was achieved earlier (p = 0.03), and mean calorie delivery (20.1 vs. 16.8kcal/kg/day, p = 0.01) and mean protein delivery (1.4 vs. 0.8g/kg/day, p < 0.01) were higher in the intervention group.

The protocolized intervention, combining early mobilization and high-protein nutrition, contributed to the achievement of treatment goals and prevention of femoral muscle volume loss.

Mosquitoes transmit a variety of diseases. Due to widespread insecticide resistance, new effective pesticides are urgently needed. Entomopathogenic fungi are widely utilized to control pest insects in agriculture. We hypothesized that certain fungal metabolites may be effective insecticides against mosquitoes.

A high-throughput cytotoxicity-based screening approach was developed to search for insecticidal compounds in our newly established global fungal extract library. We first determined cell survival rates after adding various fungal extracts. Candidate insecticides were further analyzed using traditional larval and adult survival bioassays.

Twelve ethyl acetate extracts from a total of 192 fungal extracts displayed > 85% inhibition of cabbage looper ovary cell proliferation. Ten of these 12 candidates were confirmed to be toxic to Anopheles gambiae Sua5B cell line, and six showed > 85% inhibition of Anopheles mosquito cell growth. Further bioassays determined a LC
, the lethal concentration that kills 50% of larval or adult mosquitoes, of 122µg/mL and 1.7µg/mosquito, respectively, after 24 h for extract 76F6 from Penicillium toxicarium.

Most patients with NTDs eventually develop lifelong disability, which cause significant morbidity and mortality and seriously reduce the quality of life. Our previous study has found that ethionine inhibits cell viability by disrupting the balance between proliferation and apoptosis, and preventing neural stem cells from differentiating into neurons and astrocytes. However, how ethionine participates in the pathogenesis of neural tube development through N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification remains unknown. This study aims to investigate METTL3- and ALKBH5-mediated m6A modification function and mechanism in NTDs. Herein, our results demonstrate that SAM play not only a compensatory role, it also leads to changes of m6A modification in neural tube development and regulation. Additionally, these data implicate that METTL3 is enriched in HT-22 cells, and METTL3 knockdown reduces cell proliferation and increases apoptosis through suppressing Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Significantly, overexpression of ALKBH5 can only inhibit cell proliferation, but cannot promote cell apoptosis. This research reveals an important role of SAM in development of NTDs, providing a good theoretical basis for further research on NTDs. This finding represents a novel epigenetic mechanism underlying that the m6A modification has profound and lasting implications for neural tube development.
Mandrake (Mandragora spp.) is one of the most famous medicinal plant in western cultures since Biblical times and throughout written history. In many cultures, mandrake is related to magic and witchcraft, which is said to have a psychosomatic effect (especially when mandrake contains narcotic compounds) in addition to the pharmacological influence, as occurs with other narcotic magical plants. Due to its unique properties and related myths, it is not surprising that this plant has many names in many languages.

This paper presents an attempt to reconstruct the historical, ethnobotanical, and folkloristic roots of 292 vernacular names of Mandragora spp. in forty-one languages. We used the plant's morphological data, philology, myths and legends, medicinal properties and uses, as well as historical evidence and folkloric data, to explain meaning, origin, migration, and history of the plant's names.

The names were classified into the following main categories Derivatives of mandragora (19 languages), alraun signatures, beliefs in its supernatural, natural, and mythic powers, and to a lesser extent, its uses in magic and medicine. A spatiotemporal analysis of the mandrake's names supports the old idea that the pulling ceremonies for this plant originated in the Near East and that various other myths related to this plant may have originated in different places and periods.
As methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide in exacerbating the greenhouse effect, there is an increasing interest in the utilization of methanotrophic bacteria that can convert harmful methane into various value-added compounds.
