What to Look For in a Double Travel Buggy
A side-by-side double that has small footprint (for narrow entrances and on public transport). Add carrycots or seats (with adaptors) to make the frame more sturdy for children up to 50 lbs.
A budget-friendly, basic double that has rear and front suspension to take care of uneven surfaces, a massive storage basket, and a cushioned handlebar for parents of different heights.
Size
In general double pushchairs are larger than single models - particularly when they're side-by-side buggies like the Kolcraft Geo 3 and UPPAbaby Vista 2. The good thing is that this extra width allows them to carry heavier kids without straining the chassis. They also have other important features that make them stand out, like spacious pop-out canopies that come with SPF 50 and peekaboo windows and swivel lock front wheels which help navigate narrow spots like shopping aisles cups with a single parent holder, a smart fold mechanism that is able to be completed by one hand; and 10 inch back wheels that aren't made for rough terrain, but can handle city streets and theme parks quite well.
In terms of price tags, these types of lightweight buggies that are side-by-side are quite affordable.
Weight
The heavier a double buggy is the more easy it will be to lift and maneuver. The Joie Evalite Duo, which is the lightest of our Lab tests, is a great choice if weight is an issue. It still has plenty of features like an enormous pop-out canopy that has SPF50 and a peekaboo windows and a quick-release folding system that can be folded flat in a matter of seconds and a four-wheel suspension for rough terrain and a swivel wheel at the front that makes it easy to maneuver narrow aisles of supermarkets and stores. It's also extremely affordable at more than PS1,000. It can also carry twins or a baby and toddler with the purchase of an additional'sidepack'.
Flexibility
A double buggy that is well-designed will provide a great deal of flexibility, no matter if you have twins or two toddlers or a baby. Buggies that are narrow can be used to fit into small spaces. Side-by-side models let you to keep track of your children and keep them safe while you are navigating the park or shopping. They also come with a wide range of seat configurations, so you can adapt the seat as your children grow, and some even come with the option of adding an extra ride-on board or car seat.
The Joie Evalite duo is an excellent illustration. It can fit two seats or a car seat and its easy-to-use adaptors allow you to change from single to double in seconds. It also has a nice-sized pop-out UPF 50+ canopy sunshade with adjustable leg rests as well as peekaboo windows in both seats; a standing fold that's simple and easy to perform using just one hand; and a premium suspension that makes light work of rough terrain.
The iCandy Peach tri-fold buggy is another option. They are perfect for narrow doors and aisles. They can also easily accommodate twins and a big kid with the addition of UPPAbaby's ‘PiggyBack’ board (which is available separately). The basket is generous and comes with all the extras like raincovers and liners.
Tandem buggies are generally designed with your children sitting together. This makes them easier and more stable to push on uneven surfaces, however they can be a challenge to maneuver around and over kerbs. They usually have a wider footprint than a single-seater pushchair, and can be a bit long for getting through doorways.
Comfort
This is one of the most comfortable and lightweight doubles we've tested. It has stadium-style seating on both seats, which means your children can enjoy the view. It also has an enormous UPF 50+ canopy with peekaboo window, an upholstered toddler seat with an additional RumbleSeat that comes with built-in, adjustable foot and leg rests and a cup holder for a single parent. Testers are awestruck by the way that the seats recline individually by squeezing a lever under each seat, and also say that the straps are easy to unfasten and fasten using just one hand. Push Chairs And Prams is easy to twist, making it simple to fold. It also stores with the backrest up for easy access.
With 30 different configurations (it'll accommodate twins, a baby and toddler or three kids if you add the option of a 'PiggyBack' board) it's a great choice for families who want to be able to grow with their child. The spacious basket and the soft suspension makes it suitable for kerbs as well in the city. It is also very reasonably priced. BabyGearLab recommends it for kids up to six years old.
