Spinal cord has been considered the main target of damage in hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs), but mounting evidence indicates that the brain is also affected. Despite this, little is known about the brain signature of HSPs, in particular regarding stratification for specific genetic subtypes.

We aimed to characterize cerebral and cerebellar damage in five HSP subtypes (9 SPG3A, 27 SPG4, 10 SPG7, 9 SPG8, and 29 SPG11) and to uncover the clinical and gene expression correlates.

We obtained high-resolution brain T1 and diffusion tensor image (DTI) datasets in this cross-sectional case-control study (n = 84). The MRICloud, FreeSurfer, and CERES-SUIT pipelines were employed to assess cerebral gray (GM) and white matter (WM) as well as the cerebellum.

Brain abnormalities were found in all but one HSP group (SPG3A), but the patterns were gene-specific basal ganglia, thalamic, and posterior WM involvement in SPG4; diffuse WM and cerebellar involvement in SPG7; cortical thinning at the motor cortices andsubgroups of the disease. © 2021 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.
Religious coping refers to the use of religion or spirituality to cope with stressful situations. Religious coping is a concept which involves both positive and negative cases. Studies on oncology patients, who encounter various physical and psychological difficulties, report that religious coping beliefs and practices are of great importance in helping patients to face the disease, adapt to this crisis period and accept their disease, and maintain their hope. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between religious coping and life satisfaction in oncology patients aged 65 and over.

This descriptive study was conducted at a university hospital in a city located in eastern Turkey between March and July 2020 with the voluntary participation of 125 patients with cancer. Data collection was performed via the Demographic Characteristics Form, Life Satisfaction Scale, and Religious Coping Scale.

Mean score of the Life Satisfaction Scale was significantly higher among the participawhat they experience is a divine punishment, encourage them in this way, and help them feel relieved.
This study aims to apply Hochschild's theory of emotional labour to emergency care, and uncover the 'specialty-specific' feeling rules driving this labour. Despite the importance of positive nurse well-being, the emotional labour of nursing (a great influencer in wellbeing) remains neglected.

Ethnography enabled immersion in the ED setting, gathering the lived experiences and narratives of the ED nursing team. We undertook first-hand observations at one major trauma centre ED and one district general ED including semi-structured interviews (18). A reflexive and interpretive approach towards thematic analysis was used.

We unearthed and conceptualized four feeling rules born from this context and offer extensive insights into the emotional labour of emergency nurses.

Understanding the emotional labour and feeling rules of various nursing specialties offers critical insight into the challenges facing staff - fundamental for nursing well-being and associated retention programs.

What problem did the study address? What were the main findings? Where and on whom will the research have impact? Academically, this research expands our understanding - we know little of nurses' feeling rules and how specialties influence them. The precise diagnosis of dermoid cysts, which are usually located deeper than other common cysts, is important because dermoid cysts occasionally recur after incomplete excision. Ultrasonography (US) could give useful preoperative information of dermoid cysts but only a few studies have been conducted on US findings related to dermoid cysts. This study aimed to investigate clinical and US findings on pediatric dermoid cysts.

We retrospectively reviewed the medical records, clinical photographs, and US findings of 31 pediatric patients (≤18years of age) with histopathologically diagnosed dermoid cysts who visited the Pusan National University Hospital between 2007 and 2016.

Of the 31 patients, 25 underwent ultrasonography. The mean long diameter, short diameter, and depth of the cysts were 12.7, 9.0, and 3.8mm, respectively. Sixteen cysts (64%) were ovoid, 23 (92%) showed hypoechogenicity, 20 (80%) showed heterogeneity, 19 (76%) showed well-demarcated outer margins, and all cysts showed positive posterior acoustic enhancement. All cysts extended to the subcutaneous tissue, and 15 (60%) showed a connection with the underlying muscle.

Ultrasonography may be a useful diagnostic method to visualize the extent and location of the dermoid cyst and make an accurate diagnosis prior to surgical intervention.

Recent data suggest that rosacea is related to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) due to its inflammatory nature and immune dysregulation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the values of epicardial fat thickness (EFT) and the ankle-brachial index (ABI) in patients with rosacea, as indicators of subclinical atherosclerosis and CVD risk.

This prospective case-control study was carried out on 62 participants, including 31 rosacea patients and 31 controls. The values of EFT and ABI were measured in all subjects.

The mean thickness of EFT was statistically higher in rosacea patients (0.54±0.12mm) than in the controls (0.39±0.05mm) (P<0.01). ABI was not significantly different between the subjects with rosacea and the comparison group (1.02±0.1 vs 0.98±0.07; P=0.131). A total of 29% of the rosacea patients had mitral valve insufficiency (MVI), while 3.2% of the control group had MVI (P=0.006). A mild degree of tricuspid valve insufficiency (TVI) was present in 45.2% of the rosacea patients, while 19.4% of the controls had TVI (P=0.03).

Rosacea may be associated with subclinical cardiac dysfunction. EFT measurements in rosacea patients can provide early detection of possible subclinical cardiovascular diseases, which can be life-extending in rosacea. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are required to confirm the present findings.

To assess the status of intestinal schistosomiasis among preschool-aged (PSAC) and school-aged children (SAC) and to compare the efficacy of praziquantel (PZQ) in both groups.

The study was conducted on 400 children; 103 PSAC and 297 SAC. Diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni was based on triplicate Kato-Katz thick smears from a single stool sample. To identify the missed cases by Kato-Katz, 120 randomly selected negative cases (38 PSAC and 82 SAC) were screened by real-time PCR. All S.mansoni-positive cases by Kato-Katz were treated by crushed PZQ tablets. Four weeks after treatment, the cure rate was assessed by Kato-Katz smears and real-time PCR.

The prevalence of S.mansoni with Kato-Katz was 7.8% among PSAC and 7.4% among SAC. Most of children (63.3%) had light-intensity infection. The cure rate was 100% among PSAC by both techniques, and 91%, and 77.2% among SAC by Kato-Katz and real-time PCR, respectively. In the 120 stool samples screened by real-time PCR, S.mansoni prevalence was 25%; 15.8% and 29.3% were among PSAC and SAC respectively. Treated cases showed a lower range of Ct values than untreated cases. Two melting temperature ranges (Tm=83-87°C and 89-93°C) were recognised among uncured cases which may point to S.mansoni genetic variability.

Continuous monitoring and inclusion of PSAC in schistosomiasis control programmes are crucial. Real-time PCR and other molecular tools are recommended for evaluation of the true prevalence, assessment of cure and further studies on genetic diversity.

Accurate non-invasive mapping of micron-sized axon radii using commonly applied neuroimaging techniques, that is, diffusion-weighted MRI, has been bolstered by recent hardware developments, specifically MR gradient design. Here the whole brain characterization of the effective MR axon radius is presented and the inter- and intra-scanner test-retest repeatability and reproducibility are evaluated to promote the further development of the effective MR axon radius as a neuroimaging biomarker. A coefficient-of-variability of approximately 10% in the voxelwise estimation of the effective MR radius is observed in the test-retest analysis, but it is shown that the performance can be improved fourfold using a customized along-tract analysis.Cobalt oxide (CoO) is a promising electrode for high-energy-density Li-ion batteries (LIBs), where the charge storage is believed to take place solely during the electrochemical oxidation/reduction processes. However, this simple picture has been increasingly challenged by reported anomalously large storage capacities, indicating the existence of undiscovered extra charge reservoirs inside the system. Here, an advanced operando magnetometry technology is employed to monitor the magnetization variation of the CoO LIBs in real time and, in this particular system, it is clearly demonstrated that the anomalous capacity is associated with both the reversible formation of a spin capacitor and the growth of a polymeric film at low voltages. Furthermore, operando magnetometry provides direct evidence of the catalytic role of metallic Co in assisting the polymeric film formation. These critical findings help pave the way for better understanding of the charge storage mechanisms of transition-metal oxides and further utilizing them to design novel electrode materials.
