Bacterial metabolic process variations inside Atribacteria-dominated methane moisten sediments.
salivarius LI01 exerts an effect on energy accumulation. The LI01 group showed alterations in fecal carbohydrates accompanied by an increased body weight gain. In addition, L. salivarius LI01 produced indole-3-lactic acid (ILA) and enhanced arginine metabolism by rebalancing the interconversion between arginine and proline. These findings provide evidence showing that L. salivarius LI01 can directly impact the host by modulating immunity and metabolism. KEY POINTS • Lactobacillus salivarius LI01 conventionalizes the cytokine profile and activates the immune response. • LI01 modulates carbohydrate metabolism and arginine transaction. • LI01 generates tryptophan-derived indole-3-lactic acid. • The cytochrome P450 family contributes to the response to altered metabolites.
The aim of this study was to describe the radiological features of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease (CTEPD), not yet systematically described in the literature. Furthermore, we compared vascular scores between CTEPD and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) patients, trying to explain why pulmonary hypertension does not develop at rest in CTEPD patients.

Eighty-five patients (40 CTEPD, 45 CTEPH) referred to our centre for pulmonary endarterectomy underwent dual-energy computed tomography pulmonary angiography (DE-CTPA) with iodine perfusion maps; other 6 CTEPD patients underwent single-source CTPA. CT scans were reviewed independently by an experienced cardiothoracic radiologist and a radiology resident to evaluate scores of vascular obstruction, hypoperfusion and mosaic attenuation, signs of pulmonary hypertension and other CT features typical of CTEPH.

Vascular obstruction burden was similar in the two groups (p = 0.073), but CTEPD patients have a smaller extension of perfusionThe absence of peripheral microvascular disease might be the reason for the absence of pulmonary hypertension in CTEPD.
To compare spinal bone measures derived from automatic and manual assessment in routine CT with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in their association with prevalent osteoporotic vertebral fractures using our fully automated framework ( https//anduin.bonescreen.de ) to assess various bone measures in clinical CT.

We included 192 patients (141 women, 51 men; age 70.2 ± 9.7 years) who had lumbar DXA and CT available (within 1 year). Automatic assessment of spinal bone measures in CT included segmentation of vertebrae using a convolutional neural network (CNN), reduction to the vertebral body, and extraction of bone mineral content (BMC), trabecular and integral volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), and CT-based areal BMD (aBMD) using asynchronous calibration. Moreover, trabecular bone was manually sampled (manual vBMD).

A total of 148 patients (77%) had vertebral fractures and significantly lower values in all bone measures compared to patients without fractures (p ≤ 0.001). Except for BMC, all CT-t for bone mineral content, all CT-based bone measures performed significantly better than DXA-based measures. • We introduce diagnostic thresholds of integral vBMD for osteoporosis ( less then 160 mg/cm3) and low bone mass (160 ≤ BMD less then 190 mg/cm3) with almost equal sensitivity and specificity compared to conventional thresholds of quantitative CT as proposed by the American College of Radiology (osteoporosis less then 80 mg/cm3).Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a vibrational method successfully applied in analytical chemistry, molecular biology and medical diagnostics. In this article, we demonstrate the combination of the negative dielectrophoretic (nDEP) phenomenon and a flexible surface-enhanced Raman platform for quick isolation (3 min), concentration and label-free identification of bacteria. The platform ensures a strong enhancement factor, high stability and reproducibility for the SERS response of analyzed samples. By introducing radial dielectrophoretic forces directed at the SERS platform, we can efficiently execute bacterial cell separation, concentration and deposition onto the SERS-active surface, which simultaneously works as a counter electrode and thus enables such hybrid DEP-SERS device vibration-based detection. Additionally, we show the ability of our DEP-SERS system to perform rapid, cultivation-free, direct detection of bacteria in urine and apple juice samples. The device provides new opportunities for the detection of pathogens.Humans integrate visual information about their surrounding environment to properly adapt their locomotion to step over or around obstacles in their path. We know that cognition aids in the execution of locomotion and in complex maneuvers such as obstacle avoidance. However, the role of the cognitive system in performing online adjustments to an obstacle avoidance strategy during locomotion has not yet been elucidated. Nineteen young adults instrumented with kinematic markers were asked to step over or circumvent an obstacle to the left or right. In half of these trials, participants were required to adjust this strategy when cued by LED lights two steps prior to obstacle crossing. In 75% of trials, a cognitive task was simultaneously presented (incongruent or congruent auditory Stroop cue, or neutral cue). Center of mass position and velocity was estimated and gait metrics (eg. step length) were calculated to quantify how individuals performed this last-minute direction change and determine how these responses changed when simultaneously performing a cognitive task. Results showed statistically shorter crossing steps, where the trailing limb was placed further from the leading edge and the lead limb was placed closer to the trailing edge when responding to the auditory Stroop task. Performing these avoidance strategy changes also decreased cognitive task performance. Our findings suggest that visually integrating a new stepping pattern to cross an obstacle is a complex locomotor maneuver, and requires the aid of the cognitive system to be performed effectively in a young adult population.
The scroll area of the nose is important for breathing; thereby, its reconstruction can improve the nasal patency.

To evaluate the effect of scroll reconstruction on breathing in patients following open rhinoplasty.

Using the prospective controlled study design, we enrolled a cohort of patients undergoing open rhinoplasty. The patients were randomly divided into two groups (each group with n = 14). The predictor variable was scroll reconstruction (yes/no). The main outcome variables include pre- and postoperative third-month peak nasal inspiratory flowmeter (PNIF) value (ml/min) and 10-Item Standardized Cosmesis and Health Nasal Outcomes Survey (SCHNOS). Appropriate statistics were computed, and a P < 0.05 was considered significant.

There was no demographic difference between both groups. Scroll reconstruction was associated with significantly improved PNIF post-surgery (P = 0.047). However, postoperative mean SCHNOS-O and SCHNOS-C was not different between the study and control groups (P = 0.58) CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that scroll reconstruction helps improve nasal patency during forced inspiration in open rhinoplasty patients and provides a similar aesthetic outcome compared to the non-scroll-reconstructed group. Future research works should be done in a larger patient cohort.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute virus infection, which was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as apandemic. As aconsequence, the Swiss government decreed apublic lock-down to reduce and restrict further infections. The aim of this investigation was to provide the impact of the COVID-19 lock-down on the presentations of patients in an interdisciplinary emergency department (ED).

Aretrospective study was performed at an interdisciplinary Swiss ED during the lock-down period. All patients who presented to the ED were enrolled in this investigation and compared to acontrol cohort during the same time period in 2019. Data regarding patients' characteristics, medical specialty, time course of presentations during the observation period, outpatient or hospital admission were analyzed.

In total 7072patients were included in the final analysis. During the lock-down period the number of ED presentations significantly decreased by 29% in comparison to the control period in the previous year (p < 0.0001). The analysis of the time course revealed that in each week the number of patients was lower with 13-43% reduction. Irrespective of the medical specialty, the number of presentations decreased during the COVID-19 situation, whereas this decrease was higher in surgical diseases (31%, p < 0.0001) than in non-surgical presentations (3.6%, p = 0.4).

The socioeconomic lock-down was associated with reduced number of presentations in an ED. Mainly, surgical diseases and injuries were affected in terms of areduction of presentations during the COVID-19 lock-down period.

The findings showed that the mean total content of Ni and V in the surface sediments were 45.08 ± 12.09 and 25.25 ± 20.8 μg g-1 dw, respectively. According to the analysis chemical speciation, the Ni and V residual fraction in the surface sediments were calculated for > 80% of the total level of metals, indicating that the metals may be an indicator for the input of natural resources. The analysis of the interpolation maps according to their chemical fractionation manifested that the Ni and V pollution hotspots have been happened in the northern, southern, and western points. Interpolation maps also highlighted that Ni and V are often controlled by natural factors like parent material; however, anthropogenic inputs have also caused the accumulation of these metals in the sediment. This study was aimed at evaluating the possible interference of formulated glyphosate to the endocrine control of ovarian growth exerted by progesterone, in the estuarine crab Neohelice granulata. The addition of Roundup Ultramax® (0.2 mg/L of glyphosate in the incubation medium) was able to potentiate the stimulating effect of progesterone on total vitellogenic protein (Vg) content of ovarian pieces from crabs. Moreover, the sole addition of mifepristone (antagonist of progesterone receptors) was able to produce a decrement of the Vg content, which was not reverted by the addition of Roundup. LY3009120 A similar result was confirmed by means of histological analysis, which showed that mifepristone, both alone and in combination with Roundup, inhibited ovarian maturation, while Roundup alone increased it, in terms of a higher proportion of vitellogenic oocytes. We conclude that Roundup could stimulate the progesterone secretion exerted by the ovary and/or could act as a partial agonist of this hormone in the same tissue.
