The number of PILN on preoperative CT did not predict metastasis (p = 0.40) with an average of 2 PILN seen, regardless of PILN pathology. The average nodal short axis size was 4.6 mm and 4.8 mm for benign and malignant PILN, respectively, and PILN short axis size did not predict metastasis (p = 0.39). Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have become one of the standard therapies in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Although inflammatory indices, including Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), and C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) were reported to be reliable predictors for survival in cancer patients, their clinical utility in NSCLC patients treated with ICIs is unknown.
Advanced or recurrent NSCLC patients (n = 304) treated with ICI monotherapy at the National Hospital Organization Kyushu Cancer Center and Kyushu University Hospital between January 2016 and December 2019 were analyzed. Information on patient demographics, GPS, mGPS, and CAR at diagnosis were collected. The time-dependent area under curves (AUCs) of receiver operating characteristic curves for the prediction of overall survival (OS) for each factor were compared.
Of the three indices, GPS was the most significantly correlated with the degree of disease control rate (DCR) (DCR of GPS of 0, 1, and 2 63.6 %, 49.4 %, and 41.4 %, respectively). The time-dependent AUC values of GPS for the prediction of OS were superior to those of mGPS and CAR (time-dependent AUC values of GPS, mGPS, and CAR for the prediction of 1-year OS 0.7005, 0.6736, and 0.6565, respectively). GPS was significantly correlated with performance status (PS) (P < 0.0001) and clinical stage (P = 0.0139). GPS in combination with PS effectively predicted survival at 1 year ranging from 83.5 % (GPS = 0, PS = 0) to 25.0 % (GPS = 2, PS = 2, 3). A multivariable analysis revealed that GPS was an independent predictor of PFS and OS (P = 0.0009 and P = 0.0100, respectively).

Although earlier voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) studies have shown possible neural correlates for aphasia, it remains to be clarified which brain regions are associated with subcortical aphasia. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural substrates associated with subcortical aphasia in patients with stroke using VLSM and atlas-based analyses to explore the involvement of white matter tracts and subcortical structures. Fifty patients with subacute subcortical stroke without cortical involvement were retrospectively enrolled 24 with and 26 without aphasia. We performed VLSM and atlas-based analyses of the patients' fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images and found that the left perisylvian white matter, left fronto-occipital fasciculus, uncinate fasciculus, and forceps minor were significantly more greatly affected in the aphasia than in the non-aphasia group. The left anterior thalamic radiation, cingulum (cingulate gyrus), and superior longitudinal fasciculus also showed higher involvement in this group (marginal significance). Among the subcortical regions, the left caudate and putamen were more greatly involved in the aphasia group. Our findings confirm language processing as one of the integrated sensory-motor processes that occur in the region around the left sylvian fissure. Our atlas-based analysis approach can be used to complement VLSM analyses.The natural fluorescence of tree peony is short. Forcing culture, mainly by defoliation and gibberellin (GA) treatment, is frequently used for its industrial production. We previously found forcing culture to be coordinated by non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs). Herein, we further revealed the specific role of NSCs during this process. We observed that both defoliation and GA treatment increased the photosynthesis in the bracts, and defoliation had a greater effect on NSC assimilation. We further determined the NSC content and PsSWEETs expression in the bracts, and the results indicated that GA may contribute more to NSC allocation by inducing PsSWEET7. Furthermore, we determined the trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P) content and sugar signaling-related gene (PsTPS1, PsSnRK1, and PsHXK1) expression in both the petals and bracts and found that both defoliation and GA treatment induced T6P levels as well as PsTPS1 expression in both tissues. This indicated that the sugar signaling pathway may also be involved in NSC-coordinated tree peony flowering. In particular, PsSnRK1 was more rapidly induced in the bracts (as an energy shortage response) in the control plants and was completely prohibited by defoliation and GA treatment, indicating the key role of the bracts in sugar signaling. In conclusion, NSCs induced tree peony flowering both as an energy substrate and sugar signaling trigger, with the bracts playing an essential role. These results may provide further evidence on the mechanism of NSC-coordinated flower opening in tree peony under forcing culture conditions, which may also provide a foundation for improving this technology.Drought has become a major stress for agricultural productivity in temperate regions, such as central Europe. Thus, information on how crop plants respond to drought is important to develop tolerant hybrids and to ensure yield stability. Posttranscriptional regulation through changed protein abundances is an important mechanism of short-term response to stress events that has not yet been widely exploited in breeding strategies. Here, we investigated the response to repeated drought exposure of a tolerant and a sensitive maize hybrid in order to understand general protein abundance changes induced by singular drought or repeated drought events. In general, drought affected protein abundance of multiple pathways in the plant. We identified starch metabolism, aquaporin abundance, PSII proteins and histones as strongly associated with typical drought-induced phenotypes such as increased membrane leakage, osmolality or effects on stomatal conductance and assimilation rate. In addition, we found a strong effect of drought on nutrient assimilation, especially the sulfur metabolism. In general, pre-experience of mild drought before exposure to a more severe drought resulted in visible adaptations resulting in dampened phenotypes as well as lower magnitude of protein abundance changes.In this paper, we use register data on all blood donors (n = 259,172) and changes in geographical locations of blood donation centers in the Netherlands over the past decade, to examine the strength of altruistic motivations in blood donation by testing how blood donor behavior changes after the cost of donating in the form of time and inconvenience increases. We examined whether closing donation centers influences blood donor lapse, and whether the risk for lapse varies between donors with different blood groups. A lower lapsing risk for donors with universal, O-negative blood as costs increase is considered as evidence of altruism continued efforts in making a societal impact despite the increased time commitment would indicate altruism in donor behavior. In the total sample, 137,172 (52.9%) donors lapsed at least once. We found a very strong effect of changes in the distance to the nearest collection point on donor lapse. Donors whose nearest donation center closed were 53% more likely to lapse than donors whose donation center remained open, with the risk for donor lapse increasing with each extra kilometer distance to the new nearest donation center. While O-negative donors were 10.5% less likely to lapse after closing a donation center compared to donors with other blood groups, the effect of closing was similar across blood groups. Based on these results, we conclude that blood donors are clearly sensitive to cost changes imposed by blood banks and that they are not particularly motivated by altruistic concerns. Future studies are recommended to further examine the role of contextual factors in motivational change across the blood donor career. The pattern of the aperture is reproduced in patterns of the diffraction discs allowing for a more precise position determination. In this report the accuracy of measured strain profiles using patterned apertures is investigated by evaluation of realistic simulations. This is done especially at interfaces between regions with different lattice plane spacing. It is found by evaluation of the simulations that measured strain profiles are more blurred and hence the accuracy at the interface is worse the more patterns are imprinted to the condenser aperture. An explanation of this effect is given and as a proof of principle a solution to this problem is provided applying geometric phase analysis ptychography.Anthropogenic lead (Pb) contamination resulting from the rapid growth of industrialization in coastal environments poses significant challenges. In this study, we report a novel approach utilising the large benthic foraminifera Amphisorus hemprichii as a biogeochemical archive for monitoring Pb pollution in tropical to warm-temperate coastal waters. Live juvenile specimens of A. hemprichii were cultured in the laboratory for 16 weeks with a range of seawater Pb concentrations. Lead uptake in both newly grown and pre-existing chambers of individual specimens was characterised using the microanalytical technique, Laser ablation-ICP mass spectrometry. We found that Pb concentration in the tests of cultured foraminifera in the laboratory is proportional to seawater [Pb] with the lead partition coefficient (KDPb) of 8.37 ± 0.3. This calibration together with a new biomineralisation model now enables A. hemprichii to be utilised as a naturally occurring bio-archive to quantitatively monitor anthropogenic Pb pollution in coastal waters.
