WHO defines malnutrition as severe if the z-scores are less than - 3 Standard deviation (SD), moderate if between - 2 and - 3 SD and mild if between - 2 SD to - 1 SD. This study was aimed to assess nutritional aspects of Indian children suffering from EB and to evaluate the effect of severity of EB on the severity of malnutrition. In this study, pediatric EB patients were evaluated prospectively for baseline nutritional status using anthropometric parameters and WHO growth charts, and its correlation with disease severity using instrument for Scoring Clinical Outcomes for Research of Epidermolysis Bullosa-iscorEB. In second phase, an individualized diet chart was given to meet the energy, protein and micronutrients needs and its effects were observed after 6 months. The median age of participants was 3 years (IQR-9). Of 57 patients, malnutrition was seen in 40.35% patients (22.81%-moderate and 17.54%-severe), and significantly correlated with iscorEB (r = 0.45, p  less then  0.0001). On bivariate regression analysis, iscorEB was independently associated with moderate-to-severe malnutrition (p = 0.047; OR 1.038, CI 1.011-1.066). iscorEB enabled the identification of patients with moderate-to-severe malnutrition with an Area Under Receiver Operating Curve (AUROC) of 0.72 (95%CI 0.58-0.85; p  less then  0.005). In phase 2, there was significant improvement in nutritional status in children with recessive dystrophic EB (RDEB) and dominant dystrophic EB (DDEB) subtype (p  less then  0.0001). The severity of malnutrition in EB children significantly correlates with disease severity, and is an independent predictor of moderate-to-severe malnutrition.Odours modify human behaviour. Research in this field develops rapidly, providing more and more exciting discoveries. In this context, our daily odorous environment has been surprisingly poorly explored. The aim of our study was to quantify olfactory perception and preliminarily identify factors affecting the frequency of odorous experiences. We were also interested in knowing whether human olfactory ecology relates with olfactory performance. In this study, patients with olfactory deficits (n = 62) and healthy controls (n = 97) had their olfactory threshold and odour identification abilities measured before and after a two-week intervention comprising counting of conscious perception of odours naturally occurring in the environment. In both groups, we observed enhanced olfactory performance after the intervention suggesting that (1) the conscious focus on odours may change its perception, and that (2) social and physical environment can effectively stimulate the human olfactory system, presumably supporting the improvement of olfactory sensitivity.We here analysed the populations' genetic structure of Coscinasterias tenuispina, an Atlantic-Mediterranean fissiparous starfish, focusing on the western Mediterranean, to investigate the distribution and prevalence of genetic variants, the relative importance of asexual reproduction, connectivity across the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition, and the potential recent colonisation of the Mediterranean Sea. Individuals from 11 Atlantic-Mediterranean populations of a previous study added to 172 new samples from five new W Mediterranean sites. Individuals were genotyped at 12 microsatellite loci and their gonads histologically analysed for sex determination. Additionally, four populations were genotyped at two-time points. Results demonstrated genetic homogeneity and low clonal richness within the W Mediterranean, due to the dominance of a superclone, but large genetic divergence with adjacent areas. The lack of new genotypes recruitment over time, and the absence of females, confirmed that W Mediterranean populations were exclusively maintained by fission and reinforced the idea of its recent colonization. The existence of different environmental conditions among basins and/or density-depend processes could explain this lack of recruitment from distant areas. The positive correlation between clonal richness and heterozygote excess suggests that most genetic diversity is retained within individuals in the form of heterozygosity in clonal populations, which might increase their resilience.Muscular anatomy often differs between species and individuals. In particular, the plantaris muscle (PM) demonstrates great morphological variability in its course and its proximal and distal attachments. The aim of this study was to investigate the morphological variation of the PM tendon in human fetuses. Forty-six spontaneously aborted human fetuses (23 male, 23 female) aged 18-38 weeks of gestation were studied. Morphology of the attachment of the PM was assessed in both lower extremities (n = 92). The PM was present in 72 lower limbs (78.26%) and absent in 20 (21.74%). Eight types of PM distal attachment were identified. We propose an eight-fold classification of PM insertion in fetuses. Leg length, length of tendon, extension point (ExP) from the calcaneus, and ExP thickness differed significantly among types of PM insertion.Exercise interventions have been recommended for people with non-specific low back pain. The literature is scarce regarding the effects of exercise on muscle strength, endurance, and electrical activity of lumbar extensor muscles. Electronic searches were carried out from May 2020 until August 2020 in the following databases PUBMED, CENTRAL, EMBASE, PEDro, SPORTDiscus, Scielo, and LILACS. Only randomized controlled trials with passive and active control groups were included. The methodological quality of the included studies was performed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale. Eight studies, involving 508 participants, were included in metanalytical procedures. Exercise interventions demonstrated superior effects on muscle activity (Electromyography) when compared with active controls (p  less then  0.0001). Exercise interventions demonstrated superior effects on muscle endurance (Sorensen Test) when compared with passive (p = 0.0340) and active controls (p = 0.0276). Exercise interventions demonstrated superior effects on muscle strength (Machine) when compared with passive controls (p = 0.0092). Exercise interventions can improve muscle strength, endurance, and electrical activity in people with non-specific low back pain.Numerous terpenes present in essential oils (EOs) display one or more chiral centers. Within the same genus the enantiomeric ratio of these compounds can be different. Thus, the determination of enantiomers is a valuable tool to evaluate authenticity and quality of EOs. In here, the terpene profile of primary and commercial pine EOs was analyzed by conventional and chiral gas chromatography coupled to a flame ionization detector. The enantiomeric excess of ( ±)-α-pinene was determined and significant differences between primary and commercially available EOs were observed. Primary EOs of Pinus sylvestris L. showed a positive enantiomeric excess of (+)-α-pinene whereas commercial EOs labeled as P. sylvestris L. exhibited an enantiomeric excess of (-)-α-pinene. Thus, chiral analysis provides useful information on the authenticity of pine EOs and allows to uncover possible mislabeling, the use of the wrong herbal substance and sources of adulteration in pine oil.Although the cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2R) is often thought to play a role mainly outside the brain several publications unequivocally showed the presence of CB2R on hippocampal principal neurons. Activation of CB2R produced a long-lasting membrane potential hyperpolarization, altered the input/output function of CA2/3 principal neurons and produced alterations in gamma oscillations. However, other cellular, molecular and behavioral consequences of hippocampal CB2R signaling have not been studied in detail. Here we demonstrate that the deletion of CB2 leads to a highly significant increase in hippocampal synapsin-I expression levels and particle density, as well as increased vesicular GABA transporter (vGAT) levels. This phenotype was restricted to females and not observed in males. CX-5461 Furthermore, we demonstrate an impairment of social memory in CB2 deficient mice. Our results thus demonstrate that the lack of CB2R leads to changes in the hippocampal synaptic landscape and reveals an important sex-specific difference in endocannabinoid signaling. This study supports a significant role of the CB2R in modulation of different types of memory despite its low expression levels in the brain and provides more insight into a sex-specific role of CB2R in synaptic architecture.We have measured the volatile fingerprints of four pathogenic oral bacteria connected to periodontal disease and dental abscess Porphyromonas gingivalis (three separate strains), Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella nigrescens and Tannerella forsythia. Volatile fingerprints were measured in vitro from the headspace gas of the bacteria cultured on agar. Concrete identification of new and previously reported bacterial volatiles were performed by a combination of solid phase microextraction (SPME) and offline gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We also studied the effect of the reduced electric field strength (E/N) on the fragmentation patterns of bacterial volatiles in online proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS). We aimed to discover possible new biomarkers for the studied oral bacteria, as well as to validate the combination of GC-MS and PTR-MS for volatile analysis. Some of the most promising compounds produced include 1-Methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (1MeTIQ), indole, and a cascade of sulphur compounds, such as methanethiol, dimethyl disulphide (DMDS) and dimethyl trisulphide (DMTS). We also found that several compounds, especially alcohols, aldehydes and esters, fragment significantly with the PTR-MS method, when high E/N values are used. We conclude that the studied oral bacteria can be separated by their volatile fingerprints in vitro, which could have importance in clinical and laboratory environments. In addition, using softer ionization conditions can improve the performance of the PTR-MS method in the volatile analysis of certain compounds.Corrosion of biodiesel-filled fuel tanks has become a major problem in the use of biodiesel as a new green energy source. The ionic liquid 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C10H19N2]+[C2F6NO4S2]- was used to control corrosion of C-steel in non-edible biodiesel to resolve this problem. The anti-corrosion and antioxidant properties of the [C10H19N2]+[C2F6NO4S2]- were characterized using weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, total acid number measurements beside SEM and EDX analysis. The findings show that [C10H19N2]+[C2F6NO4S2]- plays an important role in preventing C-steel corrosion in biodiesel with an efficiency close to 99 percent. The adsorption capability and antioxidant properties of [C10H19N2]+[C2F6NO4S2]- are the major contributors to the ionic liquid's anti-corrosion properties. We anticipate that this work will help to sustainable expand the use of biodiesel as a renewable energy source.This study explored the association between foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters and high myopia using optical coherence tomography angiography. We divided 106 eyes of 106 patients into quartiles based on the axial length. The upper quartile was then defined as the high myopia group (n = 27), while the lower quartile was the non-high myopia group (n = 26). The areas and minor axis lengths of superficial and deep FAZ, the perimeters and major axis lengths of deep FAZ were significantly larger in eyes with high myopia than in eyes with non-high myopia (P  less then  0.05). Inversely, the subfoveal choroidal thickness was significantly thinner in eyes with high myopia than in those with non-high myopia. Linear regression analyses showed that no significant correlation was observed between FAZ areas and acircularity and circularity indexes of FAZ in non-high myopia group. Conversely, FAZ areas strongly correlated with acircularity and circularity indexes of FAZ in high myopia group. We found that an increase in the FAZ area in highly myopic eyes was accompanied by a significant variation in FAZ acircularity and circularity indexes.
