Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV), developmental spinal canal stenosis, lumbar disc and facet joint degeneration are all common lumbar spine conditions. This study explores the relationship between these entities.

Five hundred and five patients (254 females, 251 males), mean age 57 ± 13 years, who underwent abdominopelvic CT examinations were studied. Vertebral body cross-sectional area (CSA), spinal canal CSA, width and depth were measured from L1 to L5. The presence of LSTV was documented and the severity of disc/facet joint degeneration graded.

LSTV was present in 155 (31%) of 505 patients, being twice as common in males than in females. After controlling for age, height and weight, vertebral body CSAs from L1 to L5 in male LSTV patients were, on average, 9.8% larger than those in male non-LSTV patients (p < 0.0001 for all) while vertebral body areas at L3 and L4 were 4.5% larger in female LSTV patients than in non-LSTV female patients. Disc degeneration from L2/3 to L5/S1 and facet joint increased vertebral body cross-sectional area throughout their lumbar spine compared to non-LSTV patients. This vertebral body area increase was more pronounced in male patients and also apparent in younger patients with LSTV. • LSTV patients have increased disc and facet joint degeneration affecting most of the lumbar spine than non-LSTV patients. • Increased vertebral body area may contribute to the increased lumbar disc and facet joint degeneration seen in LSTV patients.
To evaluate the relationship of the signature index (S-index), an advanced diffusion MRI marker, and the immunohistochemical (IHC) status, proliferation rate, and molecular subtype of invasive breast cancers.

A retrospective study of patients with invasive carcinoma was conducted between 2017 and 2021. All patients underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and DWI using a 3-T system. For DWI, three b values (0, 200, and 1500 s/mm
) were used to derive the S-index. Three-dimensional ROIs were manually placed over the whole tumor on DWI. Mean and 85
percentile S-index values were compared to the IHC status, proliferation rate, and molecular subtypes of lesions.

The study included 153 patients (mean age, 60 ± 13 years) with 160 invasive carcinomas. S-index values were significantly higher in estrogen receptor-positive (mean, p = .005; 85
percentile, p < .001) and progesterone receptor-positive (mean, p = .003; 85
percentile, p < .001) tumors, and significantly lower in human epidermal growth facood discrimination of immunohistochemical status in invasive breast carcinomas. • The signature index has the potential to differentiate noninvasively invasive breast carcinoma subtypes and appears as an imaging biomarker of prognostic factors and molecular phenotypes.Formaldehyde is a colourless irritating gas at room temperature, which, therefore, is usually stored in liquid form. This compound is often used as an antiseptic, disinfectant and fumigant in biology and medicine. Formaldehyde, as a potential carcinogen confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO), is seriously harmful to human systems, such as the respiratory system, immune system and reproductive system. This article reports a case of a 50-year-old woman who died after accidentally drinking 25% formaldehyde solution in a transparent plastic bottle. Anatomical examination revealed fixed tissue morphology of the stomach and adjacent organs. The toxicity test results showed that the concentrations of formaldehyde in the blood and gastric tissue were 36.56 mg/kg and 274.48 mg/kg, respectively, which was consistent with death from formaldehyde poisoning. Due to the particular smell of formaldehyde, poisoning by accidentally drinking formaldehyde solution is rare. Of late, the mechanism of death from formaldehyde poisoning is that it rapidly causes coagulation of tissue cell protein, which may lose its normal function. Based on the pathological characteristics of the case, we put forward a new viewpoint on the mechanism of death from formaldehyde poisoning in which formaldehyde causes rapid fixation of blood in the tissue, thus leading to acute circulatory disturbance.Numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence bone remodelling rates and have shown to affect the accuracy of histological aging methods. The present study investigates the rib cortex from two Mediterranean skeletal collections exploring the development of population-specific standards for histomorphometric age-at-death estimation. Eighty-eight standard ribs from two samples, Cretans and Greek-Cypriots, were processed histologically. Thirteen raw and composite histomorphometric parameters were assessed and observer error tested. The correlation between age and the parameters and the differences between sex and population subsamples were explored through group comparisons and analysis of covariance. General linear models assessed through data fit indicators and cross-validation were generated from the total dataset, and by sex and population subsamples. Most of the histological variables showed a statistically significant correlation with age with some differences observed by sex and by sample. From the twelve models generated, the optimal model for the whole sample included osteon population density (OPD), osteon perimeter, and osteon circularity producing an error of 10.71 years. When sex and samples were separated, the best model selected included OPD and osteon perimeter producing an error of 8.07 years for Greek-Cypriots. kira6 This research demonstrates the feasibility of quantitative bone histology to estimate age, obtaining errors rates in accordance with macroscopic ageing techniques. Sex and sample population differences need further investigation and inter-population variation in remodelling rates is suggested. Moreover, this study contributes to the creation of population-specific standards for Cretans and Greek-Cypriots.The number of patients presenting with frontal fibrosing alopecia (FAA) is increasing not only in hair clinics. The recognition of the peculiar clinical pattern and associated symptoms is an important prerequisite to ensure adequate counseling and therapeutic management of the patients. Experimental studies and a range of case series give first insights into the pathogenesis, possible trigger factors, clinical course of disease and treatment options. The clinical spectrum of FFA extends beyond the typical recession of the frontal hair line initially observed in postmenopausal women. Younger women, men and rarely adolescents may also be affected. Band-like extension to the occiput, diffuse bitemporal hair thinning, eyebrow and body hair involvement as well as facial papules are part of the clinical spectrum. Similar to lichen planopilaris, inflammation and fibrosis with involvement of the stem cell region result in permanent loss of hair follicles. Which additional factors contribute to the characteristic pattern remains to be elucidated. Currently, therapeutic management largely relies on anti-inflammatory treatment with combined topical, intralesional and systemic administration depending on disease activity. The chronic progressive course, sometimes even in the absence of pronounced inflammation remains a challenge for both the affected individuals and the treating physicians. Controlled studies are required to develop evidence-based recommendations and to explore novel treatment strategies.A variety of circular RNAs (circRNAs) have tumor-regulatory roles in breast cancer (BC). Circ_0000442 was reported to inhibit the progression of BC, and this study was designed to explore the novel functional mechanism of circ_0000442 in BC. The expression analysis for circ_0000442, microRNA-1229-3p (miR-1229-3p) and zinc finger and BTB domain containing 1 (ZBTB1) was performed using the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to affirm the target interaction. Cell proliferation was examined using Edu assay and colony formation assay. Cell migration and invasion were assessed by transwell assay. Flow cytometry was applied for the detection of cell apoptosis. Glycolysis was analyzed using the detection kits to measure the glucose consumption and lactate production. The protein expression levels were determined by western blot. The role of circ_0000442 in BC in vivo was explored using tumor xenograft assay. Circ_0000442 expression was downregulated and miR-1229-3p expression was upregulated in BC tissues and cells. Circ_0000442 directly interacted with miR-1229-3p. Circ_0000442 repressed proliferation, migration, invasion and glycolysis but promoted apoptosis in BC cells. The anti-tumor role of circ_0000442 was attributed to the sponge effect on miR-1229-3p. ZBTB1 was a downstream target for miR-1229-3p. Downregulation of miR-1229-3p blocked the malignant behaviors in BC cells by elevating the expression of ZBTB1. Circ_0000442 regulated the ZBTB1 level by targeting miR-1229-3p, and it inhibited tumor growth of BC in vivo by mediating the miR-1229-3p/ZBTB1 axis. All evidence unraveled that circ_0000442 impeded the progression of BC by sponging miR-1229-3p to evoke the ZBTB1 expression upregulation.
Current clinical diagnostic criteria of transient global amnesia (TGA) require the episode to completely resolve within 24h. Small case series investigating the neuropsychological profiles obtained during the first days after TGA are inconclusive, with some suggesting the persistence of memory deficits.

In this retrospective observational study, neuropsychological data of 185 TGA patients obtained during the first days following an attack were analysed. Data of cognitive functions assessed in at least 50 patients were evaluated and dichotomised according to z-values as "impaired" or "unimpaired". Moreover, the results of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were collected.

Neuropsychological assessment was performed within the first 3days after TGA in 158 (85.4%) of all patients. The majority of patients showed no significant neuropsychological sequelae in the postacute phase of TGA. However, Mini-Mental Status Examination showed impairment in 22.6% of 159 patients, and we found subtle reductions of patients' performance in tests of verbal long-term memory and executive function in 16.3-24.6% of patients. Patients with hippocampal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions performed significantly worse in a verbal recognition task than those without DWI lesions.

Our findings reflect subtle performance reductions in different cognitive domains in a small subgroup of TGA patients. This implies that the gradual resolution of subclinical symptoms may take longer than the 24h required as maximum episode duration by current diagnostic criteria.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) has been reported as a rare adverse event in association with thrombosis-thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) following COVID-19 vaccination.

We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of investigator-initiated registries including confirmed CVST cases, with the aim to calculate (1) the odds ratio of TTS-CVST versus non-TTS-CVST after vector-based vaccines and (2) after non-vector-based vaccines, (3) the in-hospital mortality ratio of TTS-CVST compared to non-TTS-CVST; and (4) the dependency or death at discharge among TTS-CVST compared to non-TTS-CVST cases.

Two eligible studies were included in the meta-analysis, comprising a total of 211 patients with CVST associated with COVID-19 vaccination. Vector-based COVID-19 vaccination was associated with a higher likelihood of TTS-associated CVST than with non-TTS-CVST (OR 52.34, 95% CI 9.58-285.98). TTS-CVST was also associated with higher likelihood of in-hospital mortality (OR 13.29; 95% CI 3.96-44.60) and death or dependency at discharge compared to non-TTS-CVST (OR 6.
