The concentrations of As in root tips were approximately five times greater than those in the root base, and root tips were the key factor determining the difference in As accumulation in rice roots under the different seedling establishment methods. The results of this study demonstrate that the choice of an appropriate rice seedling establishment method is important to avoid the environmental consequences of As contamination and safely produce rice grain. Therefore, despite the current trend of increased use of DS, transplantation is recommended as a safer pattern of rice seedling establishment in As-contaminated areas.Heavy metal risks to human health in farmland of wastewater-irrigated areas have long been recognized. It remains to be shown whether farmland heavy metals from wastewater irrigation can migrate to deeper soil at a regional scale. In this study, nine soil cores deep to 30 m from three transects (A, B and C) of a linear wastewater reservoir and the adjacent farmland topsoils and wheat grains were sampled. Heavy metals including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in the soils and wheat grains were determined, and the grains' health risks were assessed using the Target Hazard Quotient (THQ). Considerably high contents of heavy metals in both total and soluble forms were detected in deep soils, especially for the transect B where total As of 73.0 mg kg-1 at 29 m, Cd of 3.80 mg kg-1 at 13 m and Pb of 214 mg kg-1 at 30 m were detected. The silty clayey and silty layers of the transect B had higher contents of As, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn compared with the sandy layers. Across the studied area, 19.5%-34.1% of the topsoil samples were contaminated by As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, and 34.1% and 19.5% of the wheat grains were contaminated by Cd and Pb, respectively. Wheat grains from all the sampling sites had a combined target hazard quotient (TTHQ) value of >1, with As and Cd being the most important contributors. Our study revealed a wider and deeper risk of typical heavy metals originated from long-term wastewater irrigation in the sampling area, which may pose substantial health risks to the local residents via wheat grains and groundwater.Dioxins are highly injurious environmental pollutants with proven toxicological effects on both animals and humans, but to date their effects on plants still need to be studied in detail. Metal uptake values in lone Act12 treatments were higher than that of Act12 + sulfur treatments, and showed dose dependent with Act12 due to the higher biomass production. According to the biochemical analyses of rhizosphere soils, Act12 inoculation significantly increased urease (20.4%) and dehydrogenase (58.5%) while reducing alkaline phosphatase (68.0%) activity. The production of soil organic acids was, in descending order, formic acid > oxalic acid > malic acid > propionic acid and indicated a stimulated variation under treatments (SA > A > control). High-throughput sequencing revealed that bacterial community compositions were consistent in both phylum and genus taxonomies, while the final overall proportions were modified. The populations of the predominant phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes increased after sulfur application. The contribution of Act12 to the relative abundance of microbiota was minor compared to sulfur. Based on a redundancy analysis, soil chemical properties are the drivers of microbial activities and the main contributor to plant growth. Our results suggested Act12 inoculation may be part of an effective strategy enhancing phytoremediation of PTE-contaminated soils through chemical and biotic processes, and provided important implications for sustainable land utilization and crop production.
The lockdown measures following the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, intended to slow the spread of the virus, forced a sudden and dramatic change to most everyday lives. However, not all individuals may have been affected in the same way. In addition to situational factors such as occupation, family status, and health, personality traits may affect how individuals experienced the initial crisis.

Using data from the pairfam COVID-19 survey, an online survey of the participants of the German Family Panel pairfam conducted from May to July 2020, as well as personality data from the pairfam panel data, this study analyzes whether the Big Five personality traits influence the degree to which young and middle-aged individuals (16-49 years old) felt negatively affected by and were able to see any benefits of the initial COVID-19 lockdown in Germany.

While neuroticism is linked to a more negative perception of the restrictions to daily life, openness to experiences is associated with more positive perceptions of the situation. Like neuroticism, extraversion is also associated with a more negative perception, but only among respondents without a partner. For respondents with a romantic partner, no association was found.

Hospital admission data from 2004 to 2016 for cardiovascular diseases were used with patient residential postcodes as the unit of analysis. Data was split into 2004-2009 (12,551 cases) and 2010-2016 (17,154 cases) periods corresponding to land use data. We used generalized linear mixed model to analyse population density, property value, entropy index, and the kernel density (800 m) of specific land use, bus and rail stations, and road junctions, with time period and postcodes as the random effects to generate incidence rate ratios (IRRs). Results indicated that entropy index and recreational area density were associated with fewer hypertensive disease and ischemic heart disease hospital admissions (IRR range 0.49-0.68, 95%CI 0.27, 0.97). Population density and property value were associated with fewer cerebrovascular disease hospital admissions (IRR range 0.29-0.34, 95%CI 0.11, 0.75). Contrarily, density of road junctions was associated with 2.5-6.3 times more hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease hospital admissions (IRR range 2.53-6.34, 95%CI 1.07,17.91). There were no significant association between hospital admission and density of residential area, undeveloped land, rail and bus stations. The shapes of relationships for all attributes were non-linear, and changed markedly at the third quartile except for recreational area density. The findings suggest that land use attributes have some protective effects on the cardiovascular disease admission cases as compared to the transport attributes. These findings have important merits for integrating health into urban planning.
In vivo dopamine transporter imaging is a useful tool for distinguishing nigrostriatal pathologies (e.g. Parkinson's disease) from other causes of tremor. However, while many of the motoric features of Parkinson's disease (e.g. bradykinesia, rigidity, hypomimia) correlate well with reduced striatal dopamine transporter binding, the same relationship has not been demonstrated for tremor. We investigated the relationship between striatal dopamine transporter binding and quantitative measures of tremor.

23 participants with Parkinson's disease underwent standardised clinical assessment including structured, videotaped clinical examination, tremor neurophysiology study of both upper limbs using accelerometry and surface EMG, and Technitium-99m TRODAT-1 brain SPECT imaging. Normalised striatal uptake values were calculated. Tremor EMG and accelerometry time series were processed with Fourier transformation to identify peak tremor power within a window of 3-10Hz and to calculate the tremor stability index (TSI).

Spearman correlation analyses revealed an association between tremor power and contralaterally reduced striatal uptake in a number of recording conditions. This association was strongest for rest tremor, followed by postural tremor, with the weakest association observed for kinetic tremor. Lower TSI was also associated with lower contralateral striatal uptake in a number of rest and postural conditions.

These data suggest a relationship between Parkinsonian rest tremor and contralateral reduction in striatal dopamine binding. Use of quantitative neurophysiology techniques may allow the demonstration of clinico-pathophysiological relationships in tremor that have remained occult to previous studies.

As anxiety has been the chief target in most studies and research in this area has grown rapidly in recent years, we conducted the first meta-analysis to establish the effects of ABM alone for anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. Studies were identified through a systematic search in three main databases PubMed, EMBASE and PsycInfo, resulting in 17 randomized studies. The quality of these studies, possible publication bias and moderators were then examined. link3 ABM had small but significant effects on clinician-rated anxiety symptoms and attention bias towards threat, while the effect on self or parent-reported anxiety measures was non-significant. Evidence quality ranged from moderate to very low. ABM was more effective when conducted as a stand-alone treatment than as an adjunct to other treatments. In addition, younger age and larger number of training sessions were associated with a greater reduction in clinician-rated anxiety symptoms.
