Some quirks come with HEUI, such as the fact that you technically cannot run it out of oil. A 7.3-liter Power Stroke holds some 15 quarts of oil. Once you run it below 7 quarts or so, the HEUI system just won’t have enough oil to permit an engine start. A lot is going on in the HEUI system, so I’ll try to simplify it. A low-pressure lift pump sends 40 to 70 psi of fuel to the injectors in early Power Strokes. The powertrain control module commands an injection event and the injector driver module triggers the injector solenoids.

The previous owner got to 76,000 miles before the factory stock engine was “extensively” rebuilt. So far the truck has made it another 20,000 miles w/o issues, but only does light (~3500 lb) towing these days. Removing the cap would reduce crankcase pressure and prevent the PCV from sucking up oil. I think your air filter may be restricted or your crankcase vent is flowing too much air allowing it to suck up oil. Some trucks may run into fitment issues (especially those with airbags or full-size spare) but we have found a way to stuff these into almost any truck. If you have enough beer, patience, and maybe some whiskey you will get it in. That being said, the FLO-PRO & MBRP Kits fit very well and have made their piping fit with pretty much any application.

The crankshaft main and rod bearing surfaces were treated to an induction-hardening process and the crankshaft itself was held in place with a plate. One key component to the 7.3-liter Power Stroke and the Navistar T444E is the HEUI system, which stands for Hydraulically Activated, Electronically Controlled Unit Injector. More or less depending on the severity of the restriction. After deleting the DPF/CAT expect to get a combined mileage of mpg. Larger tires and poor driving habits will skew mileage downward. The difference between a muffler and a straight pipe once again will come down to preference. You’re not going to see any power gains here either, the MBRP & FLO-PRO mufflers are a perforated tube with fiberglass packed around it. These high-flow mufflers don’t reduce your flow or increase resistance but will reduce the exhaust drone and noise significantly.

The kit fits all body styles of Ford Superduty, they come equipped with extra pipes and clamps for longer or shorter wheelbase trucks. Loudness can be a pro or a con depending on your taste and application. Sometimes you just need or want exhaust that is loud. Straight pipes can usually deliver loudness, but at the price of good sound quality.

General Motors was already married to Detroit Diesel, but Ford turned out to be a great marriage partner. Ford wanted power and International Harvester wanted to deliver. Many companies for a lot of years offered DPF-delete kits, and many still do. You just won't find them (or their required PCM tuning) here at Stage 3.

The aFe POWER D.A.S. PLUS Induction system for Ford F-150 combines a Dynamic Air Scoop (D.A.S.) and a high-performance aFe POWER drop-in Pro DRY S filter. Bruno says it has zero physical compression, if the ex valves were stuck closed he'd still have compression. I'm thinking something more sinister, sounds like the rt VC is coming off for a look.

This back pressure disrupts and slows down the fuel flow, leading to reduced efficiency. Removing the DPF allows for smoother and faster fuel flow, which can enhance overall fuel mileage. If you want the loudness of straight pipes without the poor sound quality, you will almost certainly be better off with a loud performance muffler like the Paradox Hot Tamale.

Yes when I bought them they had over 100,000 miles and now they have over 300,000 miles but the amount of crap I had to go through to keep them running was incredible. I wouldn’t wish this experience on my worst enemy. Powdered-metal connecting rods also made a return in the 6.0. These rods were panned during their short life in the 7.3, but they found a good home in the 6.0 engine.

It sounds like bulletproofing is a must if you want to send power to the heavens. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to spend some extra cash to zap known issues. Yet, my van, which was stock, still drove on its original head gaskets and even still had its emissions equipment intact.

One advantage of straight pipes is that they have very little backpressure. Straight pipes offer better flow than many popular performance mufflers. This can be helpful if you’re trying to maximize performance and fuel mileage.

For these cars, it’s common to delete one or more sets of resonators and replace them with straight pipe. Let me leave you with one parting thought, regardless of your preference to exhaust systems. Get in the habit of keeping hearing protection handy and wearing it. A hundred dollars of earmuffs placed where they are handy are cheap in comparison to thousands of dollars of hearing aids on the kitchen table. Unfortunately, the cylinder pressure under the head is a lot, and has been found to stretch the stock bolts, leading to an eventual blown head gasket. Reportedly, this happens most often with modified engines, but has happened with stock engines as well. It put Ford back into the diesel truck power wars, and its EGR system satisfied emissions regulations. The variable geometry turbo was also great, allowing for hard power early on and throughout the powerband.

The 5 Inch Exhaust Systems are for people who like to party (and have annoying neighbors). It’s deep, it’s droney, and it turns heads (for better or worse). These kits sound AWESOME, however, some people find them to be too much (typically it's those people in uniforms) and find the cab drone too excessive. You can always add a resonator like the FLO-PRO Twister if you want to maintain a deep sound but dull down the in-cab drone.

The problem is, straight pipes are usually obnoxious in their loudness. Your go-to spot for information on the exhaust system, as well as mufflers, catalytic converters, pipes and sensors. Then one day I ran it down to almost E, truck never died, but a few days later I needed 6 injectors.

You need low-pressure diesel fuel, a 48-volt, 20-amp coil to operate the spool valve, and high-pressure oil that hopefully isn’t blazing hot. Screw one or more of these up, and the injector can fail. At the same time, International Harvester was looking to build a diesel engine for an automaker with a lineup of pickup trucks.

On that occasion, we collected our bucket off the ground more than we care to admit.

But here are the most common vehicles that we see with straight pipe exhaust or muffler deletes. It had 287,000 miles on its odometer and came with a stack of service paperwork. Big ticket items included four injectors replaced before I bought the van and a turbo perhaps 50,000 miles before that. The Garrett GT3782VA turbo in these engines sometimes got gunked up with corrosion and carbon, leading to sticking. Some mechanics remove the cab from above the 6.0 engine to make replacing the turbo and heads easier. Lack of easy access is another downside to these trucks.

You could spend an eternity deciding which manufacturer, which downpipe, with or without a muffler and either four inch or five inch exhaust. Luckily for you, I know a “FLO PRO 4″ DOWNPIPE BACK NO MUFFLER” exhaust system is the best exhaust for that Powerstroke engine. This results in 82% less backpressure, leading to more power, throttle response, and increased fuel economy.

Nothing looks better or lasts longer than stainless steel. The aluminized steel has a coating when scratched off will rust. But stainless steel does cost more than aluminized steel, ultimately if you can live with a rusty then you can save yourself a few bucks at checkout. There are a ton of choices when it comes to choosing an exhaust system for your Powerstroke.

Be assured that we will utilize every resource available to deliver your performance parts to you promptly. Straight pipes are usually loud, and often obnoxious. Modern muscle cars like Ford Mustangs, Chevy Camaros and Dodge Challengers and Chargers have sets of middle and rear resonators/mufflers. This arrangement is also common in sports cars both foreign and domestic.

Several loose rocker arms, loose pushrods, low pushrods(1 inch gap to rocker arms), several rocker arms almost off their valves. Also found the rubber boot for the AFE air cleaner to engine duct was rotted at the flexible bellows, with a hole in it and gritty dirt inside next duct. This is the second AFE inlet boot that has had this issue. Don't know the root cause, but suspect the performance chip was at least partially at fault. If it's popping through the intake, that leads me to believe the exhaust valves are not opening up on that cylinder. I would say there is not excessive blow-by in that case.

It got 18 mpg with me behind the wheel — good compared to my friend with a stock 7.3 Power Stroke that got 13 mpg on a good day. Sadly, the van was detuned compared to Super Duty trucks and made 235 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque. But it still made that glorious diesel soundtrack so I didn’t care one bit. Perhaps the biggest problem with the 6.0 and the VT 365 comes from the engine’s torque-to-yield head bolts. The bolts are a sizable 14mm, but there are only four bolts per cylinder, compared to the six bolts per cylinder found in the 7.3.

When this happens, the solenoid pulls an internal poppet valve off of its seat, allowing high-pressure oil into the injector. That oil comes courtesy of a high-pressure oil circuit charged by the high-pressure oil pump. The HPOP sends high-pressure oil into the injectors, which forces a piston in the injector down, lifting a nozzle.

Unfortunately, problems started getting reported in 2003 while these engines were still new. HEUI joins forces with six head bolts per cylinder, a Garrett turbocharger, forged connecting rods, and a fluid-to-fluid oil cooler to provide high performance and a lifespan that could outlive you. Later examples of the 7.3 got a wastegate for the turbo and an air-to-air intercooler. There was also a brief moment between 2001 and 2003 when powdered metal con-rods were used. International Harvester was even one of the first American companies to put a diesel engine in a light-duty pickup truck. 1963 through 1968 model year C-1100 to C-1300 IH trucks could be had with diesel power, making them what some call America’s first factory-built diesel-powered light-duty trucks.

All the electronics work, including the lovely and brilliant steering wheel controls for audio and climate controls (why don’t more vehicles have this?!). My brother has a 2005 F-450 Lariat FX4 6.0L that I found for him (admittedly I didn’t know the mileage on it when I me tioned it to him). There are a number of issues that plagued the 6.0 engine during parts of its life. Thankfully, time heals a lot of wounds, and there are now solutions to the engine’s infamous issues. 6.7 powerstroke straight pipe are a one-stop diesel performance shop for everything you need.

Aluminized steel is our most popular but will eventually accumulate surface rust. So if your testing to see if you actually got stainless; beware that a magnet will still stick to it. We suggest the stainless upgrade if you regularly operate your truck on salted winter roads.

Second, it is equipped with Electro-Hydraulic Generation Two (G2) fuel injection technology, which is based on a low-pressure common rail fuel system. Finally, Intuitive Shift controllers allow for smoother driving to compensate for the use of cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology, which cuts oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. As Motor Trend notes, regulations for 2003 would have required Ford to equip the aging mill with exhaust gas recirculation, which would have put the 7.3 even further behind the competition. Navistar and Ford decided that the best way forward was to build an all-new engine with the power to compete and the emissions to keep the feds happy. All of this happens with computer and electronic control, allowing for the control of injection events independent of what the crankshaft is doing. HEUI is able to provide peak pressures under a variety of conditions, helping to keep power up, fuel consumption down, and emissions down as well.

It turns out the injectors are lubricated by the fuel… to the point that running it low, was enough to trash them. No one really explained what happened, so a few months later the same thing happened. That was a couple more thousand, I don’t even remember, but by the time I finished with that I was ready to be done with the truck. I was starting to measure my weekly operating costs by the maintenance bills instead of the fuel bills. I wish I would have bought a slightly older truck with the 7.3. This information was taken from an affidavit by one of Ford’s own officials in a lawsuit it filed against Navistar.

He’s had other Super Duties, but they were company trucks. This is his first one he’s bought himself, and he likes it a fair bit, even if it has been a bit problematic. I mentioned some “bulletproofing” tactics above, but there are others. Some owners replace the variable geometry turbo with a fixed geometry turbo, conduct more frequent flushing of the oil cooling system, and clean the EGR system. All of this sounds scary, but for some people it’s worth it. In 2020, I owned a Ford E-350 van with a 6.0-liter Power Stroke.

The 4” exhaust system is the most popular exhaust we sell, for a good reason too. They give a great sound with little to no drone. It’s still going to bark when you get into the throttle, and when paired with a muffler it’s dulled down to a nice sound that is tolerable for diesel enthusiasts of all ages. If you’re frequently towing, like your neighbors, and don’t want to screw around with fitment issues go with a 4” exhaust system and you’ll be more than happy (your neighbors will be too). Most newer trucks come stock with a 4” from the factory, so you can easily mate up a front pipe to your factory tailpipe without any modifications.

Well, it depends on what you want from the exhaust system and your truck. For most trucks, the difference in these exhaust systems comes down to how it sounds. Unless you’re making some serious power and running a massive turbocharger, the size of your exhaust system will make virtually no difference in the power of your truck. If you want to run a full kit, it will slip in just like your factory kit without any modifications. The sound quality from straight pipes and muffler deletes is often very low, and simply cannot match the sound quality of performance mufflers.
