Anthropogenic disturbances in tropical forests often affect the genetic diversity of a species. Dipterocarpus condorensis is an endangered species in the tropical forests of south-eastern Vietnam, both from its over-exploitation and habitat loss. Therefore, knowledge of population genetic diversity and population structure is essential for identifying the species conservation measures. In the present study, we evaluated genetic diversity and population structure using nine microsatellites for 183 individual trees from eight populations, representing the distribution range of D. condorensis in Vietnam. Two clustering approaches (Bayesian analysis and discriminant analysis of principal components) revealed that all studied individuals clustered into three genetic groups, which were related to gene flow across the range of D. condorensis in the lowland tropical forests of south-eastern Vietnam. Limited gene flow was implicated in anthropogenic disturbance. Genetic differentiation among populations was relatively low (the Weir and Cockerham index of 0.122 and the Hedrick index of 0.149) and showed significant differentiation. The genetic variability of the populations was low (H O = 0.298 and H E = 0.324), which suggested the negative effects of habitat degradation and over-exploitation. Our studies also determined that D. condorensis populations can have undergone recent bottlenecks. We recommend conservation activities for this species based on these results.
Wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis is a systemic disease with predominantly cardiac symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the short-term prognosis of these patients through contractile reserve measured by stress echocardiography, given the usefulness that this parameter has demonstrated in other populations. We considered major events as death from any cause and hospitalization for heart failure.

We conducted a study with a 1-year follow-up in 11 patients who were proposed to undergo a stress echocardiogram, with the follow-up as usual according to their doctor. We excluded pacemaker wearers, patients with permanent atrial fibrillation, those incapable of exertion at low loads, and those with poor acoustic windows.

On one hand they have investigated whether smokers attend and look preferentially at smoking related scenes and objects. In parallel, on the other hand eye tracking has been used to test how smokers and nonsmokers interact with the different types of health warning that policymakers have mandated in tobacco advertisements and packages. Here we provide an overview of the main findings from the different lines of research, such as the evidence related to the attentional bias for smoking cues in smokers and the evidence that graphic warning labels and plain packages measurably increase the salience of the warning labels. The participants were required to track moving optotypes horizontally, and their pupils were recorded on video with an infrared camera. Stimuli of different speeds from 10 to 60 degree per seconds were presented in low (0.01 cd/m2) and moderate (30 cd/m2) luminance environments. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the motion stimuli induced pupil dilation in a speed-dependent pattern. The pupil dilation increased as the speed increased, and the pupil dilation gradually increased, then reached saturation. Experiment 2 showed that a stimulus targeting the rod- or cone-mediated pathway could induce pupil dilation in a similar speed-dependent pattern. The absolute but not relative pupil dilation in the cone paradigm was significantly larger than that in the rod paradigm. As the speed increased, the pupil dilation in the cone paradigm reached saturation at speed slower than the rod paradigm. Motion stimuli induced pupil dilation in a speed-dependent pattern, and as the motion speed increased, the pupil dilation gradually increased and reached saturation. The speed required to reach saturation in the cone paradigm was slower than in the rod paradigm.
The incidence of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi)-induced cough has been reported between 5% and 30% but is unknown in Malaysia. This study aimed to determine the incidence of ACEi-induced cough and its associated factors in a public primary care clinic in Malaysia.

A retrospective review of electronic medical records of patients who were initiated ACEi between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2015, and reviewed until July 31, 2016. A total of 1,091 patients were newly prescribed ACEi, and 394 patients were eligible for this study. We excluded patients who defaulted follow-ups with no further clinic visits before July 31, 2016, were transferred to the clinic without the recorded date of ACEi initiation, were transferred to other clinics during the study period, were followed up at other clinics and attended the study clinic for a short period, or were given only a stat dose of ACEi.

Among the 394 patients initiated on ACEi, 225 (57.1%) were male, 369 (93.7%) were Malay, 376 (95.4%) had hypertension, and 192 (48.7%) had diabetes. The incidence of ACEi-induced cough was 24.1%, and 42 (10.7%) patients developed cough on the day of therapy initiation. There was no association between age, gender, ethnicity, type of ACEi, and cough.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and status of refractive error among Chinese primary school children in a rural area in Pahang.

This investigation entailed a cross-sectional retrospective study design involving case file analyses. The study site was a Chinese medium primary school in a rural locality within Bentong district. A total of 82 school children met the B40 classification and selection criteria; therefore, universal sampling was done. Analyses were done according to age group Level 1 included ages 7 to 9 years, while Level 2 comprised 10- to 12-year-olds.

The mean age of the 82 Chinese school children was 9.72±1.5 years; the percentage of refractive errors found was 80.48%. A total of 53 (64.63%) children had myopia. Two-way ANOVA showed a significant difference (
=0.038) in the refractive error between age groups Level 1 and 2, but no significant difference (
=0.947) was observed in refractive error between genders. The chi-square test and Fishers exact test showed no significant association between the type of refractive error with gender (
>0.05) and age group (
=0.319).

We report a case of maculopapular eruption associated with mucocutaneous involvement and systemic symptoms. The possible differential diagnoses and approach to the management of this patient are discussed.Insulin oedema is a rare condition that may occur after the initiation or rapid intensification of insulin therapy in patients with long-standing hyperglycaemia, commonly with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM). We reported a case of insulin oedema in a patient with type 2 DM who presented with swelling of the extremities and weight gain of 3 kg 1 week after insulin initiation. A course of furosemide was administered, but no significant immediate improvement was observed; however, the lower limb swelling resolved spontaneously after 3 months of follow-up. The patient also achieved adequate diabetic control with insulin, as shown by the reduction of her HbA1c from 10.7% to 6.9% over 6 months. Insulin oedema is a diagnosis of exclusion after ruling out other differential diagnoses, such as cardiac, renal, or liver failure. Although insulin oedema carries with it a good prognosis, physicians should be aware of the condition to avoid misdiagnosis.
