Osteoporosis is a risk factor for instrumentation failure in spine surgery. Bone strength is commonly assessed by bone mineral density (BMD) as a surrogate marker. However, BMD represents only a portion of bone strength and does not capture the qualitative dimensions of bone. Recently, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score was introduced as a novel marker of bone quality. However, it is still unclear if the VBQ score correlates with in-vivo bone microstructure.

The aims of the study were (1) to demonstrate differences in MRI-based (VBQ) and in-vivo (microcomputed tomography; μCT) bone quality between osteopenic/osteoporotic and normal bone, (2) to show the correlation between VBQ, bone microstructure and volumetric BMD (vBMD), and (3) to determine the predictive value of the VBQ score for the prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis.

Therapeutic devices for spinal disorders, such as spinal fusion cages, must be able to facilitate the maintenance and rapid recovery of spinal function. Therefore, it would be advantageous that future spinal fusion cages facilitate rapid recovery of spinal function without secondary surgery to harvest autologous bone.

This study investigated a novel spinal cage configuration that achieves in vivo mechanical integrity as a devise/bone complex by inducing bone that mimicked the sound trabecular bone, hierarchically and anisotropically structured trabeculae strengthened with a preferentially oriented extracellular matrix.

In vivo animal study.

A cage possessing an anisotropic through-pore with a grooved substrate, that we termed "honeycomb tree structure," was designed for guiding bone matrix orientation; it was manufactured using a laser beam powder bed fusion method through an additive manufacturing processes. The newly designed cages were implanted into sheep vertebral bodies for 8 and 16 weeks. An auep spine is similar to the human spine in its stress condition and trabecular bone architecture and is widely recognized as a useful model for the human spine. The present design may be useful as a new spinal device for humans.
The objective of the study was to verify whether (FFM), maturity status (MS) and chronological age (CA) are determinants of physical fitness performance, and to analyze FFM and physical performance aligned by CA and MS in children and adolescents.

A descriptive correlational study was carried out in 863 schoolchildren. Weight, height, and waist circumference (WC) were evaluated. Body mass index (BMI), FFM, fat mass (FM), MS (Age at peak height velocity, APHV) were calculated. The physical tests of velocity 20m, agility 5m x 10rep, and horizontal jump (HJ) were evaluated.

The APHV was estimated in boys at 14.0±0.36APHV and in girls at 11.96±0.49APHV. The relationships between CA and APHV with FFM was r= 0.80 in boys and r= 0.44 to 0.45 in girls. The relationships between FFM and physical tests in boys were [HJ (r= 0.70), agility 5m x 10rep (r= -0.68), velocity (r= -0.61)] and in girls [HJ (r= 0.42), agility 5m x 10rep (r= -0.52), velocity (r= -0.20)]. The differences in FFM and physical fitness tests were more pronounced when aligned by APHV than by CA.

It was verified that both FFM, CA, and APHV are determinants of physical fitness performance. In addition, the APHV should be introduced in physical education as a means of ranking physical performance among schoolchildren.

To describe the trend of participation in group and individual support by human milk banks (HMBs) provided between 2010 and 2019 in Brazil.

Ecological study with data from participation in group and individual support provided by the HMBs between 2010 and 2019, available in the production report of the Brazilian Network of Human Milk Banks. The number of participation in group and individual support was expressed for Brazil and for Brazilian macroregions in absolute numbers. Trend analysis was performed from the analysis of index numbers, considering the year 2010 as a reference. It was calculated the ratio of the number of participation in group and individual support by HMBs for each macroregion and year.

There was an increase of 42% in participation in group support (300,595 in 2010 vs 425,570 in 2019) and an increase of 69% in individual support (1,157,038 in 2010 vs 1,962,162 in 2019). The North and Northeast macroregions had the highest growth rates in the provision of these services (122 and 131%, respectively), above the national growth rate in the study period. In contrast, the Midwest region showed a downward trend throughout this period, for both types of support. However, in the Midwest, there was a higher ratio of participation in groups by HMBs between 2010 and 2016 and for individual support by HMBs between 2010 and 2012.

In isolated murine cardiomyocytes, CA showed a concentration-dependent cytoprotective effect against Dox. Dox treatment significantly (p less then 0.01) increased the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), increased NO levels, activated NADPH oxidase, and inactivated the cellular redox defense mechanism in cardiac cells, resulting in augmented oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes and rat hearts. Dox-induced oxidative stress significantly (p less then 0.01) upregulated several pathogenic signal transductions, which induced apoptosis, inflammation, and fibrosis in cardiomyocytes and murine hearts. In contrast, CA significantly (p less then 0.05-0.01) reciprocated Dox-induced cardiac apoptosis, inflammation, and fibrosis by suppressing oxidative stress and interfering with pathological signaling events in both isolated murine cardiomyocytes and rat hearts. CA treatment significantly (p less then 0.05-0.01) countered Dox-mediated pathological changes in blood parameters in rats. Histological examinations backed up the pharmacological findings. In silico chemometric investigations predicted potential interactions between CA and studied signal proteins, as well as the drug-like features of CA. Thus, it would be concluded that CA has the potential to be regarded as an effective agent to alleviate Dox-mediated cardiotoxicity in the future.
The root of Angelica sinensis, has been commonly used in gynecology for centuries, and is normally applied divided into different parts in various clinical applications. At present, the majority of existing studies focus on the volatile oil and ferulic acid extracted from different parts of A. sinensis, but there is a dearth of scientific information on its water-soluble polysaccharides.

The structures of polysaccharides from plants, have been reported contributing to multiple pharmacological activities such as anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and liver protection. Therefore, the focus of this study was on its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro, which would be based on the various polysaccharides with distinct structures obtained from different parts of the A. sinensis root.

Fluorescence titration studies depict that amiloride binds to ctDNA with a binding constant in the order of 102 M-1 and free energy change (ΔG0) of -14.05 KJ mol-1. Competitive fluorescence studies indicated the minor groove binding property of amiloride, whereas major groove binding mode was deduced for rimeporide and cariporide. Molecular docking studies were also found to be in accordance with the experimental results, revealing the information about the binding energy of the guanidine ligand-ctDNA complex. The docked structures depicted binding energy of -6.4 kcal mol-1 for amiloride and - 6.6 kcal mol-1 for rimeporide and cariporide. Such physicochemical studies of DNA-ligand interactions may facilitate the understanding of the mechanisms of NHE inhibition.
It is not well understood how patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) change from initial presentation to day-of-surgery (DOS). This study sought to quantify preoperative PROM changes for hip and knee arthroplasty patients.

A retrospective review was performed on primary total hip, total knee, and partial knee arthroplasty patients from October 2020 through January 2021. Trends in preoperative Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Physical Function (PROMIS-PF), Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement (HOOS-JR), and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement (KOOS-JR) scores were compared using scores at initial presentation in the ambulatory clinic and at a time near the date-of-surgery. A total of 497 patients possessed 2 preoperative PROMIS-PF (497/497), HOOS-JR (152/497), or KOOS-JR (258/497) surveys.
