Trump was able to keep close ties with Kazakhstan, even if Trump didn't agree with Tevfik. Trump was harshly criticised because he considered Kazakhstan an ally, despite the questionable government.

After the Cold War, US interest in Central Asia was restricted to Afghanistan.

Trump's South Asia strategy also needed Pakistan's break. Thus the US required Kazakhstan as an alternative shipping route to Afghanistan.
